boat as its hull pushes through the water can disturb the lake bottom and cause erosion on the shoreline. In fact, that’s one reason why boaters are limited to headway speed – as slow as possible while still maintaining control – in many lake areas, including within 150 feet of the shore.

“Hopefully folks that are boaters out there under-stand the rules of the road when it comes to staying offshore and headway speed and all of that,” LaM-oreaux said.

A jewel in NH’s crown

Clean, clear water is one of things that continue to attract people to visit and reside in the state.

“New Hampshire has really excellent water qual-ity. Across the board, our water quality is better than most of the other states in the country, and our lakes have particularly good quality,” said Ted Diers, administrator of the Watershed Manage-ment Bureau, part of the state’s DepartManage-ment of Environmental Services. “The reason why so many people are here is because we have such a beautiful resource for people to enjoy.”

While things like beer cans can detract from human enjoyment of the environment, Diers said it’s management of things not visible to the naked eye that have resulted in better quality water.

lakes, it’s not the people hanging out on the water, it’s the activity on the land around the lakes,” Diers said. Are there native woodlands and shrubs on the shoreline, or are there lawns kept green with fertil-izers? Are dirt roads near the shore eroding into the streams that flow into the lakes? Are boaters mis-using access points by opening their throttles near the shore? Are nearby septic systems being properly maintained?

“The biggest thing from the lake perspective is just controlling phosphorus. The more development there is around a lake, the harder it is to control phosphorus, and the more people have to work at it,” Diers said. “This is not that sexy, but it’s what really drives lake water quality.”

WOLFEBORO — The New Hamp-shire Boat Museum will host the annual New England Vintage Boat and Car Auction at Nick Recreation Center in Wolfeboro on Saturday, July 17 at 10 a.m. While bidders can attend in-person, the auction will also enable individuals to remotely bid on items.

“Our virtual auction worked really well last year, so we wanted to leverage that technology this year, too,” said NHBM Executive Director Martha Cummings. “We are also excited, of course, to return to The Nick and see some familiar and new faces.”

While details regarding available items for this year’s auction have yet to be released, the event historically fea-tures dozens of boats as well as cars, outboard motors, miscellaneous boating items, and lake memorabilia.

Some examples of items from last year include a 1955 25’ Chris Craft Continen-tal, 1983 Crosby Yacht Fantail Launch, 1947 Chris Craft Deluxe Runabout, 1957 Morris Minor Convertible, and 2006 Bentley Flying Spur.

According to Cummings, details on auction items will be released in late June/early July. “This year’s auction will be incredible, so stay tuned,” she said.

Boats and cars will be displayed on museum grounds for the general public to view on July 16 and 17 from noon to 5 p.m. An additional preview showing will take place from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sat-urday, July 17 followed by live bidding at 10 a.m. Registration is free for current NHBM members and $10 for non-mem-bers.

MOULTONBOROUGH — Through-out New Hampshire, many loon pairs have begun to incubate eggs, with many more expected to begin nest-ing in the comnest-ing weeks. If history is any guide, close to 40 percent of these nests will fail, many due to human disturbance. “Loons are vulnerable when they’re on land because their bodies are designed for life in the water, making it difficult for them to move well on land,” says LPC Senior Biologist and Executive Direc-tor, Harry Vogel. “If humans closely approach loon nests, the loons feel threatened, and they will get into the water where they’re more mobile and therefore safer. That leaves their eggs exposed and vulnerable to predators or the elements.”

Boaters are urged to stay back at least 150 feet from nesting loons, or more if the loon shows any signs of

distress, such as craning its neck low over its nest. Loons may appear to be injured in this head-down position, but it is simply a response to the close approach of people. If boaters do acci-dentally get too close to a nesting loon and cause it to flush from its nest, they are advised to leave the area immediately. “Most of the time, if the threat leaves, that loon will get right back on its nest and keep incubating,” says Vogel.

If you observe harassment of loons, you may contact New Hampshire Fish & Game Department 603-271-3361 or Marine Patrol 603-293-2037 for assis-tance.

To learn more about loons in New Hampshire, please visit the Loon Preservation Committee on the web at www.loon.org or call the Loon Pres-ervation Committee at (603) 476-LOON (5666).
