Opening Litany and Prayer – Pastor Dana Werts Gracious God,
You have made all of the peoples of the earth for your glory. You invite us to serve you in freedom and in peace.
Give to the people of our nation a zeal for justice and the strength for forbearance,
that we may use our liberty
in accordance with your gracious will. We ask this on a day of celebration, a day of hope for a nation made free. We ask this in the name of the one who welcomes all to be free indeed.
Inspire us to live and worship in your freedom and for the sake of your kingdom. Amen.
(Adapted from the Book of Common Prayer)
* Hymn #696 – “American the Beautiful”
O beautiful for spacious skies, for amber waves of grain; for purple mountain majesties above the fruited plain!
America! America! God shed his grace on thee, and crown thy good with brotherhood
O beautiful for heroes proved in liberating strife,
who more than self their country loved, and mercy more than life!
America! America! May God thy gold refine, till all success be nobleness,
and every gain divine.
O beautiful for patriot dream that sees beyond the years thine alabaster cities gleam, undimmed by human tears!
America! America! God mend thine every flaw, confirm thy soul in self-control,
thy liberty in law. Skitguy Video

Pastoral Prayer and Lord’s Prayer – Pastor Josh Gillen
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily
bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
* Hymn #451 – “Be Thou My Vision”
Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
Thou my great Father, and I thy true son, Thou in me dwelling, and I with thee one. Riches I heed not, nor man's empty praise; Thou mine inheritance, now and always; Thou and thou only, first in my heart, High King of heaven, my treasure thou art. High King of heaven, my victory won,
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all. Call for the Offering – Pastor Josh Gillen

Scripture: – Pastor Josh Gillen
Galatians 5:1, 13-26 (NRSV)
5 1 For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not
submit again to a yoke of slavery.
13 For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your
freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. 14 For the whole law is summed up in a single
15 If, however, you bite and devour one another, take care that you are not
consumed by one another.
The Works of the Flesh
16 Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For
what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not
subject to the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication,
impurity, licentiousness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger,
quarrels, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things
like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
The Fruit of the Spirit
22 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law
against such things. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified
the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also be
guided by the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, competing against one
another, envying one another. Message: “Freedom” – Pastor Josh Gillen

* Song – “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)” – Praise Band
Amazing grace how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost but now I'm found Was blind but now I see
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fears relieved
How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed
Chorus
My chains are gone I've been set free My God my Savior has ransomed me And like a flood His mercy rains
Unending love amazing grace
The Lord has promised good to me His word my hope secures
He will my shield and portion be As long as life endures
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow The sun forbear to shine
But God who called me here below Will be forever mine
Will be forever mine You are forever mine

Sermon Notes:
Freedom
Galatians 5:1, 13-26 (NRSV) What does freedom mean to you?
How do we understand freedom in different ways? As Christians? As citizens?
How do you use your freedom?
One of the fruits of the Spirit is Self-control. How is Self-control an expression of freedom in Christ?
What would you say is an abuse of freedom?
Is the freedom to harm really freedom at all?
How do you choose to walk and live in freedom? By the flesh or by the Spirit? How are they different? What makes you free?
