Introducing the onBlocks Content

Manager

Welcome to the onBlocks Content Manager from Shopatron.

The Content Manager lets you easily add or change the pages on your company’s website, even if you have no HTML or Internet experience. Although you will still want outside help when you make major changes, you can now handle simple day-to-day updates to your Web pages yourself. If you need to add a news release to your site, change

information about a dealer for your dealer locator, or change a description or image or your About Us page, you can do it yourself.

Note > You use the Content Manager to manage your “marketing pages, ” not your product pages. You can, however, use it to manage your product and product category SEO, and to link from your marketing pages to your product and category pages.

This document includes the following information:

> Introducing the Content Manager — Provides basic information about Content Manager, for new users. Describes what templates are and how they work, and how to access the Content Manager and use its WYSIWYG editor and other basic tools.

> Creating New Content — Describes how to create a page from scratch. If you are modifying existing content, you can skip this section.

> Managing Existing Content — Describes how to create, modify, list, and delete all types content. Includes information on basic, single pages (like your About Us page), listing pages (like those used for News and Dealers), and special-purpose pages (like the Search page).

> Managing Content Categories — Describes how to add, define, and rearrange content categories if your site has been configured to work with content categories.

> Managing Menus — Describes how to modify the menus that appear on your website.

> Managing Media Files — Before you can use any media file on a web page, you must add it to the Content Manager. Media files include images and flash files, and may also include document, video, and other media file types. This section describes how to list, add, modify, and delete media files.

> Publishing — Any time you finish adding or changing content pages, you need to publish them. This section describes how to publish pages in the onBlocks Content Manager.

What is a Template?

2 >

Introducing the Content Manager

Since the onBlocks Content Manager is our newest product, we’ve used it to try out some of our new ideas. It does not look like other areas of the Shopatron merchant interface.

We hope that you’ll find the Content Manager easy and pleasant to use. As time goes on, we’ll be changing other areas so they look and work more like the Content Manager. Let us know what you think.

What is a Template?

In the Content Manager, each page has a “template” associated with it. The page’s template determines what the page looks like and what content it can include.

When you create or modify a page in the Content Manager, you fill in pre-defined fields by entering text, images, and other data. The page’s template determines how the data you enter is displayed. In other words, the template controls:

> What fields are used on the web page

> Where the data from the field appears on the page

> How each field is formatted (or what it looks like)

Different templates are used on different pages in your site. For example, your Contact Us page uses a different template than your Dealer page, which uses a different template than your About Us page. This is why these pages look different from one another.

Also, your templates are different from those used by other companies. Depending on your agreement and conversations with Shopatron, your templates may have been customized to fit your specific requirements.

What if a field appears in the Content Manager but is not in the page template?

Even though a field appears in the Content Manager, it may not actually be supported in the page template. An example of this is “Subtitle,” which often appears on the Manage Content tab, but is only used in special, customized templates at this time.

(7)

Selecting a site and language

What if a field is in both the Content Manager and the template but you don’t define it?

If a field is used in the template but you do not enter anything in it inside the Content Manager, that area of the final page will be left blank. There is no alert or informational message, and an artifact (like “Enter your text here”) will not be displayed on the final page.

Do all pages use the same template?

One reason to use templates is to make sure that related pages have the same basic, professional look.

> All simple (basic) pages on a site use the same template.

> Listing pages use another template. Your News listing page has the same basic page layout as your Dealer listing page and uses the same template.

> Each special-purpose page, like Contact Us and Search, uses a unique template. You may not be able to customize the Contact Us information at the bottom of the page or the Search tool, as those areas are defined by the template.

> Finally, your templates may have been customized for your site. To find out more about the templates on your system, ask your Shopatron contact or Implementation Manager.wr

Accessing the Content Manager

To log in to the system and start the Content Manager

1 Using your web browser, go to the URL provided by your Shopatron account manager or MSS representative.

2 When the login screen is displayed, enter your email address and password.

3 Click the Login button.

4 Click the Content icon in the toolbar to enter the Content Manager.

Selecting a site and language

Before you perform any task inside the Content Manager, you select the site and language you want to work on.

(8)

Making Selections

To select a site and language

1 Using the Language pull-down menu to the right of the site’s Catalog ID, select the language you want to work on.

If only one language is available for the site, you can skip this step. Click the Select button to the right of the Site Name and Catalog ID for the site.

Making Selections

When you select the Content Manager, the Shopatron interface changes to provide the tools you need to add content.

Using the title bar

The title bar at the top of the Content Manager has these buttons:

Home Click the Home icon to exit the Content Manager and return to other areas of the Shopatron merchant interface. Be sure to save your Content Manager work before clicking this icon.

(9)

Using the tabs

Site, Language, GO

On the top right, menu buttons show the site and language you’ve selected. To see the other sites and languages available for the current catalog, click the arrows on the right side of the buttons.

To choose a different site or language, select one of the sites or languages displayed and click the GO button.

IMPORTANT! Be sure to save your work before selecting a new site or language.

Using the tabs

Using menus

(10)

Making Selections

Entering information in fields

Each tab includes fields, which you complete to create or modify site content. In some cases, the template does not support all the fields provided.

If a field is not supported (or included) in the page template, any content you enter in it is ignored.

If a field is supported in the template but you do not enter content in it, that area is left blank in the final page.

Selecting Active, Inactive, or Hidden

Many tabs and other content items include a pull-down or button that you use to set them as Active, Inactive, or (in a few cases) Hidden.

> Choose Active only when you want an item to appear on your live site.

> Choose Inactive or Hidden to hide an item until it is approved and ready to go.

This status allows you to work on an item before displaying it to the public. It also allows you to hide items when you no longer want them to appear on your site without totally deleting the data from the system.

Create versus Add

In some instances, you have two options, to create (as in “Create Content Block”) or Add (as in “Add Content Block”).

If you choose Create, the tools you need to create an item from scratch will be displayed. If you choose Add, the tools you need to add an existing item are displayed.

Specifying Meta data

Content tabs sometimes include fields for a Meta Title, Meta Keywords, and Meta description. These items are used by Search engines and detailed where they are used.

Using the WYSIWYG editor

When you need to enter formatted text, a WYSIWYG editor allows you to make your entry:

(11)

Using the WYSIWYG editor

Rollover text is available for each icon in the toolbar. To learn the function of any icon in the WYSIWYG editor, place your mouse over that icon and a brief description will appear.

Using the upper toolbar

To format of characters or paragraphs, first select the text you want to format, then click the appropriate icon in the upper toolbar.

The icons in the upper toolbar are common to most word processors, so the rollover description should be sufficient to understand an icon’s function and we do not describe them further here.

Using the lower toolbar

The icons in the lower toolbar have the following functions:

The left-most group of icons are for cutting, copying, and pasting the selected text. The icon functions are pretty self explanatory. The icon displays a tool that allows you to paste content from Microsoft Word. If the cut and paste tools don’t work in your browser, use their keyboard equivalents.

The next two tools are used to find items in the text area, and to find and replace text area, respectively.

Finding and replacing text

These two icons let you undo an edit and redo an edit you’ve just performed an “undone,” respectively.

These three icons are used to perform these changes to selected text: outdent it (if it has been indented), indent it, or put it in a block quote. These “chain link” tools bring up tools that you can use to add or remove html links to your text.

(12)

Making Selections

These three icons let you display the content you are creating in different ways. The HTML icon displays the content as HTML. You can click it to work in HTML, if you prefer. The Preview icon previews the content, showing it as it will appear on your web page. The third icon shows your content in full-screen mode.

Creating New Content

Creating a New Page

This chapter describes how to create content from scratch using the Create New Page tab.

Most of the time, however, you modify existing content when you use the Content Manager. To learn how to modify existing content, go to

“Managing Existing Content” on page 11.

The basic steps for adding a new page are as follows 1 Select the Create New Page tab, as

Define the page content by filling in the fields provided. (See “Editing a Simple Page” on page 13.)

2 Add the menu item for the page. (See “Add the Menu Item for the Page.” )

3 Publish your changes. (See “Publishing” on page 47.)

Add the Menu Item for the Page

After you define the content for your new page, you give it a title and specify where it will appear on your site. As soon as you save the new page, the 1. Add Page Menu Item tab is displayed.

Page Name Enter the name for your page. The Page Name will appear at the top of the new page.

Menu Item Location

Select a menu item location for the page. This is the menu that the page will be linked to.

> If you do not want to add the page to a menu, select Don’t add to a Menu.

(14)

Creating a New Page

4 >

Managing Existing Content

You use the Manage Content tab to modify existing content.

Types of Content

This content can be grouped into three basic categories:

Simple pages A few “simple pages” were provided by Shopatron when they designed your site. These probably included the About Us page and your Home Page.

Any new pages you create yourself with the Create Page tab will follow the same design and use the same template as these pages. These are also simple pages.

Listing pages “Listing pages” are used to display data that is defined in the system. Examples of listing pages are the Dealer Locator and the News module. In these cases, there is a page block (or “listing page”), which lists your data on the site, and the individual bits of data.

Typically all listing pages — the News listing page, the Dealer Locator listing page, and any custom listing pages that were created for you — use the same template (which is different from the simple page template). Special-purpose

pages

Special-purpose pages include Contact Us, Search, Shopping Cart, and Site Map.

When you display one of these pages in the Content Manager, several fields are displayed, but you will only be able to modify one or two items. The others will not affect the final web page.

(16)

Using the Manage Pages Menu

Using the Manage Pages Menu

Basic menu options

There are three types of pages in the Content Manager: simple pages, listing pages, and special-purpose

To create or modify content, select the content from the basic page menu. In the example on the left, the menu includes these options:

> About Us — a simple page usually provided by Shopatron

> Dealer Locator — a listing page that displays dealer data

> Home Page Content — a special-purpose page

> News — a listing page that displays news item data

> Contact Us, Search, Shopping Cart, Site Map — three more special-purpose pages

> Show Advanced Content — which you click to display other options.

If you select a simple page (such as About Us) > the page you’ve selected is displayed

> the “Page Block” menu item is also displayed

If you select a listing page (such as Dealer Locator) > the listing page you’ve selected is displayed

> the “Page Block” menu item is displayed

> a menu item that you can click to list existing data for that page is displayed (in the case of Dealer Locator, this item is “List Dealer”)

> a menu item that you can click to add new data for that page is displayed (in the case of Dealer Locator, this item is “Add Dealer”)

If you select a special-purpose page (such as Home Page Content > the page you’ve selected is displayed

> the “Page Block” menu item is also displayed

(17)

Basic menu options

Editing a Simple Page

A simple page is content that translates to an individual web site page on your site.

The simple page specification may include text, images, content blocks, media galleries, and SEO terms. Like every page in the Content Manager, the template determines the content a simple page can include and how that content is displayed.

Simple pages include the About Us page and Contact Us page that were included when your system was first set up, and any pages you created with the Create New Page tab. The Home Page, Search Page, Shopping Cart page, and Site Map page are not simple pages, they are “special purpose pages.”

To modify a simple page when you are in the Content Manager 1 Click the Manage Content tab.

2 Click the name of the page you want to modify in the Manage Pages menu.

3 Modify any of the fields described below.

4 Click Save to save your changes.

1 > Start the new page

The following fields are provided:

Title Enter the Title that you wish to appear at the top of the page and in the bread crumb for the page you are creating.

Sub Title In some cases, you'll also want to enter a Sub Title. If your template does not include a Sub Title, any text you enter here will not be used.

Tip > For most implementations, the Sub Title is not used

Preview Text You usually use the Preview Text field to provide a brief summary of the web page.

The exact use of the Preview Text field (where, how, and if its contents will appear on a web page) is determined by the page's template.

Text You define words and images for the web page in the Text field. A “WYSIWYG” editor is provided in the Content Manager, which allows you to format your text and add images, links, etc., to it. The WYSIWYG editor looks and works very much like any standard text editor, such as Word.

Help is provided inside the WYSIWYG editor for the WYSIWYG options.

Viewing Media Files

Viewing Media Files

Supported media files are listed and described below.

Structural image files

Structural images are the elements you use throughout your site as buttons, logos, banners, navigational elements, and so on. Frequently, structural images exist when you set up your site and do not change unless you do a major update.

Although, functionally speaking, these may be identical to images, as they are the same file types and have the same limitations, they are maintained in this separate area to make housekeeping tasks easier.

Structural image files may be in .jpg, .gif., or .png format. The maximum size for a structural image file is 2MB.

Image files To add images to your website pages, you first download the image files here, then you reference the files when you create the pages themselves in the Pages section.

Image files may be in .jpg, .gif., or .png format. The maximum size for a structural image file is 2MB.

Video files You manage the video files you use on your web pages in the Media section. You add them to the pages when you create the pages themselves.

Video files may be in .wmv, .avi, .mpg, .mov, or .mp4 format. The maximum size for any video file is 16MB.

Flash files You manage the Flash files you use on your web pages here. Both .swf and .flv files are accepted. The maximum size for any Flash file is 16MB.

The following document file formats are accepted: .pdf, .csv, .doc, and .xls. The maximum size for any file is 16MB.

Audio files Audio files are supported in .mp3, .wmv, or .wav format. The maximum size for any audio file is 16MB.

Using the media file display

You can display your media in two different ways, as a grid or as a list.

> Grid — A grid shows multiple elements in every row.

The grid layout shows more elements in less space. This layout reduces the amount of scrolling you will have to do. This is the default layout.

> List — A list devotes an entire row to every element. The list layout provides slightly more information.

Choose the layout you prefer. There is no functional difference between the two.

To toggle between the two display modes, you use the Display As options while your media is displayed.

> To display multiple elements in a row, click Display As Grid. Grid display is the default.

> To display each element in its own row, click Display As List.
