FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Art Education (4801)

and

Bachelor of Design / Bachelor of Art Education (4808 & 4811)

1. Given UNSW is introducing new degrees for art education from 2014, will students already enrolled in Art Education or Design/Art Education need to change their degrees?

No, students already in the BArtEd and BDes/BArtEd will continue to complete their studies in the BArtEd or BDes/BArtEd. They will not be required to change programs and will complete the courses they have expected to complete.

2. Will students who graduate from the BArtEd or Des/ArtEd still be accredited to teach? Yes, the BArtEd and BDes/BArtEd will continue to be accredited with the NSW Institute of Teachers and graduates will continue to be eligible to teach in NSW as previously. 3. Will I still be taught entirely by COFA staff at Paddington?

No, the School of Education at the Kensington campus will teach some of your SAED courses. For most of these courses you will have a lecture and tutorial at Kensington and have education students from all disciplines with you in class. Others will be entirely at Paddington.

4. Will all my courses be taught in the same semester?

No, some courses will be taught in a different semester than you might have expected. You will still enrol in the SAED course as usual, but you need to be aware, when you are planning your enrolment, when courses are available. Please ensure you use a Program Structure diagram, which you can download from the Handbook when you work out the courses you need to take and compare it to the list below to check when they will be offered:

5. What about my fine art or design courses?

Students will continue to be able to take art, design and media art studio courses on the Paddington campus, as well as art and design history courses, to complete their

degrees.

6. What about my other art education courses? Will they continue to be offered?

We will continue to run the Art Education core courses you will need to complete your degrees as well as some electives. Most art education core listed below courses are running every semester to assist you in planning your enrolment.

7. How long will the Bachelor of Art Education continue to be offered?

Courses won’t be offered for longer than needed for students who are completing their degrees at the normal pace. Please see the table below for proposed last offerings. Make certain you check what you need to do to complete.

If students take leave, or for some other reason find that they need to complete a course when it is no longer offered, students will be able to take equivalent courses from the School of Education.

8. What will be different about art education for students commencing from 2014? Students coming into art education from 2014 will continue to be educated as art, design and now multimedia technology teachers at UNSW. They will take two degrees: one in Secondary Education, taught by the School of Education, and one from COFA, in either Fine Arts, Design or Media Arts. The change will mean that students complete the full BFA, BDes (Hons) or BMA (Hons) degrees, which will usually mean they will complete more studio courses. Their core education courses in educational psychology, social perspectives, special needs, gifted and talent students, professional issues and classroom management, will be at Kensington.

In the new dual award programs the specific art education courses will continue to be taught at Paddington by practitioners with current or very recent experience in Visual Arts and/or Graphics and Multimedia Technology, complemented by a minimum of 80 days of staged professional experience and a lengthy internship in schools. There will continue to be a variety of opportunities for community engagement and placement in other educational settings such as museums and art galleries, and a range of electives in many areas of education, including some directly related to art education.

9. Why is UNSW changing the way Art Education is being taught?

The fundamental reason is that the requirements of professional accreditation mean that stand-along specialist education degrees like the BArtEd are no longer going to be able to meet all the demands. So the University began a process several years ago to move from the 5 or 6 specialist education degrees, such as in Dance Education and Music Education, and instead provide a specialist education degree with a specialist dance, music or fine arts degree. Students do not have to study any more courses than before, and in one case students will be able to complete the program in one less semester, saving them time and money. At the same time most will be taking more courses in fine arts, design, and media arts.
