1) Mechirat Chametz (Sale of Chametz)

As you are aware, during the eight days of Pesach, our homes must be cleared of all grain products and all products that have any grain content. All such items are to be placed in designated areas and sold for the eight-day period to a non-Jew. During the entire Pesach, the designated cabinets should not be opened, and no items in the designated areas should be used during this period.

This year, the actual sale of chametz will take place two days before Pesach –not on Erev Pesach (Shabbat). The sale will take place on Friday morning. If you wish to have the rabbi serve as your agent to sell your chametz, please complete the enclosed contract appointing Rabbi Gideon Shloush to have this taken care of on your behalf. Our rabbinic intern Yehuda Rosenberg will be available to facilitate the transaction for those who would like to come in person.

2) Bedikat Chametz (Search for Chametz)

Bedikat Chametz is performed in its normal manner, with a Bracha, on Thursday night, March 25. It should take place immediately after the stars come out (7:15pm), and should be a thorough check of the entire house. If one will be leaving one’s house for Pesach and will be doing the search before Thursday night, no Bracha is said. The regular formula of Bittul Chametz (nullification) is said after the search nullifying any chametz of which you are not aware. All chametz that will be eaten on Friday or Shabbat (the chametz of which you are aware) should be put aside in a safe place.

3) Biur Chametz (Burning and Disposal of Chametz)

The chametz that one is neither selling nor saving to eat on Friday afternoon and Shabbat morning should preferably be disposed of and/or burnt by 11:56am on Friday. Even though one is technically allowed to own chametz until Shabbat morning, our Rabbis have set Friday morning as the time for biur (burning)

chametz so as not to get confused in later years. As mentioned, this deadline applies only to chametz which one will not be setting aside for Friday afternoon

and Shabbat. Note that one does not say the second bittul (nullification of) chametz formula at this time, but rather it is said on Shabbat morning.

4) Shabbat Meals

Shabbat meals present the most interesting dilemma on Shabbat Erev Pesach. The meals in our home can and should be Pesachdik. All Chametz pots, pans, plates and utensils should be put away before Shabbat, because they can no longer be washed on Shabbat. At the Shabbat meals, however, one must eat some sort of bread product. One must eat at least two meals (preferably three) on Shabbat with some sort of Homotzi and Birkat HaMazon (Grace after Meals).

Certainly, it would be easier to dispose of all Chametz before Shabbat and simply eat Matzah or Egg Matzah on Shabbat. Many however have the custom not to eat any sort of Matzah on Erev Pesach so that one will look forward to eating Matzah at the Seder. For this reason, many have the tradition to eat regular Chametzdik rolls at the Shabbat meals. Of course, one must eat those rolls very carefully!!

Here is a recommended procedure for Shabbat dinner and lunch: Cook all foods in Pesachdik disposable tins. Set the table with fancy paper goods and a plastic disposable tablecloth. Make Kiddush. Make Hamotzi on rolls and eat the bread. Watch carefully that the crumbs don't fall on the floor. Put away the rolls before eating the meal. Wrap up the table cloth and dispose of it in a public domain. Note that no Chametz may be eaten after 10:56am on Shabbat morning.

Seudah Shlishit (the third meal) can be eaten using rolls by splitting the lunch meal into two. One would wash, eat bread, bentch (say Grace after Meals), take a walk, return and wash again and eat another round of bread. Many simply eat the third meal in the afternoon without any bread product and fulfill their Seudah Shlishit obligation in this way.

5) Disposal of Chametz

If you will be eating chametz at home on Shabbat, you should flush any remaining chametz (leftovers from your meals) down the toilet before 11:57am. There is no other practical way to dispose of the chametz once Shabbat has begun. Crumbs from the meals can be thrown in the garbage and removed from the house. After Shabbat lunch, (after disposing the chametz), one should recite the second bittul - nullifying even chametz that one know about.

Maot Chitim

Every Jew is responsible for one

another” (Talmud-Sanhedrin). It has

been the tradition throughout our

history to provide for those less

fortunate than ourselves. At Passover

there is a special Mitzvah to set aside

money for families in need so that they

too can purchase matzot and other

necessities. Please respond generously

to our annual Maot Chitim drive to

help fulfill this important obligation.

Yizkor

Yizkor services will take place

on the last day of Passover,

Sunday, April 4th at

10:45am and 11:45am.

A yizkor form is included with

this mailing.

CEMETERY PLOTS

Are you planning to celebrate

a Simcha with your family?

Organizing a birthday party for your

child?

Looking to entertain a large group of

Friends outside your home?

Don’t overlook the benefits of renting a

room in the Shul. The cost is economical

compared to other Kosher facilities. The

convenient location, close to home, is

another plus. And of course, your rental

helps to support the Shul.

BEQUESTS

Honor your loved ones in the long-standing Jewish tradition.

Having a plaque for a loved one on the Synagogue’s memorial

wall is a most fitting way to recognize the lives of our dear

departed. During Yizkor and Yahrzeit, the lights next to the

plaque are lit in their memory. Please call the office to arrange

for the purchase of a bronze plaque at (212) 685-0241.

MEMORIAL PLAQUES

Is the Congregation in your will?

An important part of the Congregation’s finances is represented by

bequests, gifts after death, by friends and members of the Synagogue.

Thoughtful bequests have helped the Congregation continue to serve the

membership, the community and in maintaining the physical facilities. Your

gift insures the future of Jewish life. A will should be prepared with the help

of professional advice.
