The Spirituality of Lent

Lent is a season of grace when Catholics deepen their spiritual life through the inten onal prac ce of the tradi onal disciplines of prayer, fas ng and almsgiving. The immediate goal of these prac ces is to purify our hearts, to be con-verted and re-formed more closely in the image of Christ so that we will be able to par cipate in the resurrected life of Christ at Easter. The long-term goal is to incorporate these Lenten disciplines as a way of life so that we live the resur-rected life of Christ and so are made worthy to live with him eternally in the kingdom of heaven.

A wonderful image of these Lenten devo ons that I heard at a mission many years ago is that of coloring Easter eggs. The eggs are dipped in colored vinegar so that they are dyed beau ful colors. The more they are dipped the deeper the color gets. Just so with our souls. Each year during Lent we dip our souls and get colored a li le bit in the beau -ful image of Christ. The longer we do this, the deeper this image gets imprinted into our souls. Though the colors may fade a li le during the year as the reality of our human condi on presses upon us, each Lent we dip ourselves into these spiritual disciplines and are colored more deeply in the image of Christ.

In prayer we raise our minds and hearts to God seeking to know his will for us. But the ul mate goal of prayer is simp-ly to be with God, growing into a more deepsimp-ly in mate rela onship of love and trust. In fas ng we give up “things” to loosen our a achment to, and dependence on, them. The ul mate goal of fas ng is to detach from whatever sepa-rates us from God. In almsgiving, we share our blessings with those who are less fortunate in obedience to God’s com-mand and to atone for our sins. The ul mate goal of charity is to realize that we are all one in the body of Christ. In God’s kingdom there is no “mine” and “theirs”.

First Sunday of Lent

In the first reading God makes a covenant with Noah and his descendants with a promise that there will never be an-other flood to devastate the world. He places a rainbow in the sky as a sign of his covenant. St. Peter says that, just as God delivered Noah from the flood, so, too, the waters of bap sm saves their souls by an “appeal to God for a clear

conscience, through the resurrec on of Jesus Christ”. In the gospel, Jesus is driven into the desert for forty days,

tempted by Satan and ministered to by the angels. He returns to Galilee, proclaiming that the kingdom of God is at hand. He tells the people to repent and believe in the gospel.

First Sunday of Lent Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent. We began the Lenten journey this past Wednesday, receiving ashes on our foreheads. Marked with the sign of the cross we were told that “we are dust and unto dust we shall re-turn.” Ash Wednesday reminds us that the things of this world will pass away and calls us to focus on things that are eternal. The peniten al prac ces of the season are a way of remembering that the earthly gi s we enjoy are indeed gi s from God to be used wisely. The prac ces of self-denial and almsgiving (charity, sharing) remind us that many of the things we enjoy are luxuries, not necessi es. And everything we have is to be appreciated as gi , to be used for the glory of God. The prac ce of prayer, si ng quietly with God, can help us maintain the proper spiritual perspec ve and guide us in the right use of the gi s we have.

In bap sm, we have been given the grace to be united with God and given the Holy Spirit to keep us in right rela-onship to him. Lent is, of course, a journey to bap sm. Using the disciplines of the season, we focus our spiritual energies on stripping away that which separates us from God. Conversion, a turning around of our lives, is the spir-itual change in our a tudes and ac ons that realigns our wills with the will of God. The disciplines of Lent are not virtues in themselves. These disciplines are the process which leads us back to God. Ideally they should be

prac-ced all year.

In today’s gospel, Jesus spends forty days in the desert, tempted by Satan. This tells us that Jesus is human. We all face tempta ons. Lent is a spiritual odyssey that we take with Christ. We learn from him; we imitate him. And if we are faithful, we become like him (our human nature is divinized). Jesus spends the forty days in prayer to allow himself to be steeped in the presence of God. He grows closer to God, understands God’s will for him more clearly and is given the power to carry out God’s will. He goes forth proclaiming the gospel of God saying, “This is the me of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel.” Lent reminds us that the king-dom of God is here. We have to live in the here and now. Now is the me of fulfillment. Now is the me to turn to God. And, most importantly, now is the me to believe in the gospel.

The gospel of God is the good news that God has made a covenant with us, offering us forgiveness of sin and a share in his divine life. In the reading from Genesis, God establishes a covenant with Noah, promising never again to destroy mortal beings through the waters of a flood. This prefigures bap sm where the waters destroy the power of sin and give birth in us to eternal life. St. Peter reminds us of this, telling us that bap sm saves us now. Just as God promised Noah that the rainbow would be an eternal sign of the covenant, so, too, is bap sm an eter-nal sign of God’s covenant with us. Because we are bap zed only once (usually as infants), we need to be remind-ed of this covenant. Every Lent we are remindremind-ed of this covenant as we follow Jesus to the cross and resurrec on. We hear again the story of salva on. We par cipate in the promise of salva on when we imitate Christ, overcome our human tempta ons and live our bap sm.

Just as Jesus was given the grace of God in the desert, we are given the grace of God when we par cipate in God’s covenant. The Eucharist is the constant and consistent reminder of the covenant. In the Eucharist we par cipate in the death and resurrec on of Christ who gives himself to us. Lord, only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

The schedule of Lenten Services can be found on page four. To help us on our Lenten journey, we have a booklet of reflec ons (“The Li le Black Book”) for each day of the season. These booklets are available at the church exits and at the rectory.

Please read Bishop Manz ‘ le er on page five regarding a proposed amendment to the RMC Unifica on Decree of St. Robert Bellarmine and St. Constance parishes. I have a few remarks following.

We will celebrate the Rite of Enrollment for First Communion at a special mass next Sunday at 12:30 for our first communicants and their families. Please keep them in your prayers. First Communion is on May 1st this year. Have a Holy and blessed Lent.

First Sunday of Lent Page 5 February 12, 2021

Dear Parishioners of St. Constance and St. Robert Bellarmine,

First, please know of our prayers for you and your parishioners as we con nue in the early days of the new calen-dar year and soon enter our shared Lenten journey.

We write to you in regard to concerns that have arisen following publica on of the formal decree. As the decree noted, parishioners can write to Cardinal Cupich to ask him to reconsider or amend the decree. We are aware of many le ers concerned about designa on of the parish church. Please understand we have reviewed these con-cerns with Cardinal Cupich and will also review the concon-cerns with the Presbyteral Council at its next mee ng in ear-ly March.

Below we also wish to clarify important elements to understand about the future direc on of your parishes uni ng as one new parish.

It is important to know both St. Constance Church and St. Robert Bellarmine Church will be vital churches for wor-ship within a united parish. There are no considera ons to close either church in the future. They are both needed to support vital ministry under a united parish.

Rome requires that a united parish’s sacramental records be kept in one place and for that loca on to be designat-ed in the decree as the parish church. Either St. Constance campus or St. Robert Bellarmine campus could serve equally well as the parish church for purposes of maintaining the sacramental records. The decree named St. Rob-ert Bellarmine as the parish church. We have asked Cardinal Cupich, and he has agreed, to re-consult the Presbyt-eral Council to consider changing the parish church designa on at the Council’s early March mee ng. We will pro-vide an update shortly a er the Council mee ng.

To be clear, the parish church designa on does not affect how the churches will be used day to day, the Mass schedule the united parish will set, nor the office hours at each loca on. Those are all decisions the future pastor will make and will not be affected by which loca on is designated the parish church.

Addi onally, please know the archdiocese’s Priests’ Placement Board is reviewing pastor candidates who can effec-vely support vibrancy in both Polish and English for the united parish to evangelize the neighborhood and con n-ue the strength of Polish ministry where St. Constance has been and will con nn-ue to be an important center for the Archdiocese of Chicago.

We have great hope for your parishes uni ng as a new parish. You remain in our prayers. Please keep us in yours. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend John Manz Rev. Jason Malave

Episcopal Vicar, Vicariate IV Cardinal’s Liaison for Renew My Church

The above le er refers or a recommenda on to Cardinal Cupich a er receiving some complaints from the Polonia group of St. Constance, evidently expressing their concern that by naming SRB as the new parish church, the Cardinal really intends to close St. Constance. Despite reassurances to the contrary, they are do not seem to be sa sfied. Evi-dently the Bishop feels that proposing an amendment to the decree will reassure the Polish community at St. Con-stance. The Presbyteral Council will consider this proposal when it meets on March 2. The Cardinal will probably ac-cept whatever they recommend. I don’t think the wording of the decree makes any difference, nor do I see any point in changing it, either. Whatever the Cardinal decides, we’ll make it work.
