Alpha Lambda Chapter Meeting
Alpha Lambda Minutes December 3, 2016
The Carriage House Restaurant at the Myrtles Plantation
The December 3 meeting of Alpha Lambda was called to order by president Jo Ann Hebert followed by Collect and Pledge to the Flag by Catherine Olinde and Betsy Stafford respectively.
Roll call by Cristina Talbot revealed 9 members in attendance. Minutes from last meeting were not read since these had been sent to members via the newsletter. Sandra Purpera reported a balance of $513.89. Joyce Landry informed members that correspondence secretary Gwen Laviolette sent thank you notes to Gary Robertson and Charles DeGravelles for their presentation at the last meeting.
First order of business was a lovely induction ceremony conducted by Jo Ann Hebert of new member Lynette Dutsch. Lynette received beautiful red roses and a member pin as signs of initiation into Alpha Lambda chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society.
Old Business: Twelve books for state project “Buggies of Books for Babes” were donated by Alpha Lambda and delivered to the District meeting in Pontchatoula. Betsy, Joyce, Jo Ann, Catherine, and Peggy attended the meeting. Betsy will be working on Alpha Lambda’s State Convention basket with the theme “Sugar Galore.” It will include baking items such as sugar, cookie sheets, cake pans and mix, and anything sugar. Shortly, a complete list of suggested items will be emailed to all members.
New Business: State Convention will be in Kenner, LA on March24-26, 2017 at the Hilton, New Orleans Airport.
JoAnn passed out applications for interested members. JoAnn Hebert and Catherine Olinde will be presenters at State Convention. Their session is entitled Google Classroom which is used by many teachers including one of our members, Lynette Dutsch. Jo Ann and Catherine will also present Agriculture in the Classroom this summer in Myrtle Beach at the Southeast Conference.
Members were reminded that the Literacy Numeracy Project See Grant is due January 15 and is only for teachers.
The Grant in Aid is also available for a non-member who is pursuing a curriculum in education. Names can be submitted to Jo Ann.
Two names were suggested for recognition of non-member Women Educator. Each of these teachers will receive a certificate to honor their service. Jo Ann asked members if any member had participated in educational
volunteer activities in community. Alpha Lambda can earn points for providing educational community service.
Joyce asked that a committee be formed for the Fleur de Lis Project. The following members will serve on the committee: Karen Barrios, Cindy Guidroz, Joyce Landry, Betsy Stafford, Cristina Talbot, and Myrna Tuminello.
Members were encouraged to read Billy Cannon: A Long, Long Run by end of February.
The meeting was adjourned and members enjoyed their meals of po’boys, turtle soup, gumbo, and salad. Many thanks to hostesses: Joyce Landry, Betsy Stafford, Sandra Purpera, Catherine Olinde.
A special thank you to Joyce’s mother, Josephine, for the precious reindeer pins she lovingly made for each member. Also, a hiccup and a thanks to Ty Landry who donated bottles of red wine from a movie set to all members in attendance.

Alpha Lambda Teachers Partner with Adult Literacy Advocates
Alpha Lambda Teachers met in December for a Christmas meeting at the Carriage House Restaurant in St.
Francisville. The highlight of the gathering was to initiate Lynette Dutsch into the society. Lynette is a music teacher at Livonia High School. Jo Ann Hebert, President, performed the initiation ceremony and presented Lynette with red roses and a certificate. She was warmly welcomed into Alpha Lambda by all members present.
It was announced that Betsy Stafford would create our theme basket to participate in the state convention raffle. The basket theme, Sugar Galore, was selected and all members will donate items for the basket. A
discussion followed on event applications, state convention and Grant-In-Aid. Jo Ann and Catherine Olinde have been selected to present a workshop, Google Classroom, at the Epsilon State Convention during March. It will be held in Kenner. We are so proud that they have also been selected to present another workshop at the AG in the Classroom Conference.
A report was given on the Fleur de Lis Program at the meeting. The Alpha Lambda Program “Education Changes Lives Forever” featured members partnering with the Adult Literacy Advocates (ALA) of Baton Rouge.
Alpha Lambda teachers collected adult and children’s books, magazines, catalogs and maps etc. and set up a library for ALA students to borrow or keep at home and use to work on their literacy skills. The program began last spring when members attended an Adult Literacy Advocate fundraiser, An Evening with Great Authors. The event included a review of the book Billy Cannon: A Long Long Run by Charles deGravelles and Billy Cannon.
An ALA student also spoke at the fundraiser about her experiences in the adult literacy program and how it has changed her life. Hearing her was a wonderful and unique experience.
