Year 2 – Week 3 Theme learning

When you have completed an activity take a photo, then upload it onto PurpleMash, you can also leave a note to tell us how you found the learning and if there was anything that you found tricky. We will give you some feedback when once you have finished. You can also

email pictures of your work into school using the following email address [email protected].

Can I make a moving object using found resources?

Last week you would have planned your moon buggy design. This week you are going to make it. Using your egg cartons and any other junk modelling materials, you are going to have a go at creating your moon buggy.

You will also have to experiment with different ways to try and make you moon buggy move. Maybe you might use bottle lids and wooden stick. You may want to makes some wheels. The option is all yours.

Don’t forget to upload a picture of your moon buggy on to your purple mash blog for all your friends to see.

Let`s take some time to have a break from our learning. Sitting together with an adult talk about the

following questions, what would you do? What will be

everyone’s answers? What questions could you ask someone to find out more about their idea?

This week’s talk time: See PSHE section (p.6)

Can I use different painting techniques and colour mixing?

This week we are going to get a little creative with our different painting techniques and colour mixing.

When painting there are lots of different techniques you can use to create different styles. This is all down to how you hold the paint brush or how hard or light you paint. Have a go on a bit of paper first to experiment with different techniques.

You will also need to do some colour mixing, try to avoid using colours just from the bottle or pallet. Mix each colour to get a unique one. Test out the different colours on a bit of paper first each time.

If you don’t have paints don’t worry there is also a 2do on purple mash that you can use and experiment with. If you can try to do todays activity on paper, you could also use colouring pencils.

You are going to have a go at recreating the famous Starry Night painting by Van Gogh. Click the picture below to find out more about this famous artist.

Take your time to look carefully at the painting to see the different shapes and textures. Use your different painting techniques to paint the picture and make the textures.

You can upload a picture of your painting onto purple mash via your class blog or 2email.

Science

Can I perform a simple test?

You’re on the Space Station and need to do a spacewalk, but you’ve torn a big hole in your glove, how can you fix it?

Look at the materials you have available to fix the glove, which do you think will work the best? Which material can you attach to the glove to help fix the hole?

T H I N G S T O T H I N K A B O U T

The glove needs to be airtight. Design several different tests to see if the glove is fixed. Possible tests could be:

- Place your hand inside the glove and wiggle it around, does the fix stay in place?

- Try to thread the pipe cleaners through a

colander wearing the glove, is it still fixed? Is it harder to do this activity wearing gloves than not?

-

Fill the glove with water? Does it leak? If water can get out, air can get in

.

What will you need

- Masking tape - Tape - Gaffer tape - Plasters - Washing up gloves - Water - Washing up bowl

- Different materials (for example paper, plastic, foil, fabric)

When you have finished your test

there is a 2do on purple mash

where you can upload a picture of

your experiment and write a

sentence to describe and explain

your outcome. Don’t forget to use

because to explain what happened.

Coding

We are going to learn about collisions in games.

What happens when two things bump into each other? They crash into each other. This is also known as a collision.

Using the 2code chimp 2do, open it and add a background and a main character. (you can use the help box to watch a video for how to do this the little button in the top right corner) For a collision to occur your two characters need to move into each other. See my code example for how I made my character move into each other. (top 2 pieces of code)

Using the collision detection code explore some of the possible things that could happen when two objects collide:

- One or other or both stop

- One or other or both hide (e.g. a spaceman moving towards a rocket: upon collision, the spaceman hides, making it look as if he went into the rocket).

- One or other or both move differently (change direction) - Background image could change (drag the code block into the collision detection block)

- A sound could play (drag the code block into the collision detection block)

- A message could print to the screen or an alert box could appear (drag the code blocks into the collision detection block) - You could make a combination of actions happen upon collision e.g., a sound and an action.

Use the collision detection code to have a go at writing instructions for what the game will do when to things collide. Here is my example, what are you going to do for yours?

Geography

Can I compare the similarities and difference between Wouldham Village and Tocuaro?

Today you will be having a look at Wouldham Village and a village in Mexico called Tocuaro. You will need to look at the physical and the human geographical features between the two villages. Use this to recap human and physical features

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zqj3n9q/articles/zr8q7nb You can use satellite or aerial images to look at the two villages. This is looking down on the earth from space. Use Google earth to have a look at both villages from space. If that doesn’t work you can just look at satellite images on normal google maps.

Make some notes if you can see any similarities or differences. Then you can watch Barnaby bear`s visit Tocuaro.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z2nb9j6

Using the purple mash 2do or a piece of paper, you can write up the similarities and differences between the two villages. You may also want to do some extra research or find some pictures to help you.

RE

This week we are learning about the story of Jesus healing the ten lepers and only one returning to say thank you to Jesus. How does it feel when please don't say thank you to you? It can make us feel sad. Christians believe that it is important to say thank you to God for all the things in their lives. Watch the following clip to help you remember the story and then complete a thank you card to someone. If you make your thank you card on paper take a photo and send it to the purple mash email addresses. Looking forward to seeing your thank you card!

PSHE

Using your talk time with family members discuss your goals and achievements. Talk about and reflect upon the following questions, you may want to look back at last week’s PSHE work

- Was is it easy to meet your goal?

- Is there a different way you could have met your goal? - Is it okay if we found it hard to meet our goals?

- What would you do if you couldn’t meet your goal? - What do you think your school goal will be? - Is it easier to meet a goal with someone’s help? - Do you think we should be helped to meet our goal?

- How do you celebrate achievements with your friends or family? - How do we celebrate achievements at school?
