The Faculty Teaching and Learning Center (FTLC) is pleased to announce the

development of a new faculty group focused on utilizing technology to

enhance the teaching and learning experience. The purpose of the Faculty

Technology Group is to provide an opportunity for instructors to share their

experiences using technology as well as identify new and innovative tools that

can be integrated into the face to face or virtual classroom. Group members

will also provide valuable insight into the technology resources currently

available at the university and assist the FTLC in determining future tools to

fund.  It is our hope that through the collaborative efforts of this group, we will

be able to identify best practices related to technology, tools to improve

instructor efficiency, and strategies to increase student engagement. If you

have some creative ways of using technology or would like to learn more about

how to integrate technology into your classes, please consider joining the

Faculty Technology Group.

Contact Chris Shiery at [email protected] or (661)654‐2084 if you would like

to join the Faculty Technology Group.

Have you ever wanted to attend one of the Faculty Teaching and Learning Center’s workshops to further your professional

development but your current schedule doesn’t grant you the time to do so? Well, the FTLC is now offering greater

flexibility in our training schedule by accommodating individuals who would like to attend virtually from their home or

office. Our training calendar has a complete list of all the workshops currently scheduled for the Spring quarter. If you

would like to attend virtually, please RSVP for the training and indicate that you will be attending virtually. A staff member

from our department will contact you with instructions on how to virtually attend. Virtual workshops will require

participants to have access to Skype on their computers. The following link will direct you to the list of workshops for this

quarter (http://www.csub.edu/tlc/events_workshops/index.html). For more information, please contact Anissa Fontenot at

Psychology, Political Science, Advanced Education, Accounting and Finance, Philosophy and Religious Studies,

Chemistry, and Physical Education and Kinesiology departments. Recipients received anywhere from $250‐$500 to

The 6th Annual Summer Institute for Online Teaching is now accepting applications for participants. The institute, which  will be held June 20th23rd and August 8th  11th, will familiarize participants with the Quality Matters standards and how  they apply to online/hybrid course design. Participants will also share ideas and strategies in the design and teaching of

online/hybrid courses. CSUB faculty and instructors can attend the institute for free and will receive a $600 stipend for

successfully completing all the requirements. The first week of the institute will focus on designing the course utilizing

Quality Matters standards. Throughout the week, staff from the FTLC will be available to assist instructors in developing

their courses and providing technical support. The second week, instructors will present their completed courses for

review and must only be present for one hour to do so. The lab will remain open during the second week, however, for

any instructors who would like to work on finalizing their courses prior to the review. For more information or to register

for Summer Institute, please contact Chris Shiery at [email protected] or (661)654‐2084 .

Director Instructional Development, Charlene Hu, and Instructional Designer, Anissa Fontenot, attended the Online

Learning Consortium (OLC) Conference in New Orleans, LA. The conference was held April 20‐22, 2016 and focused on

a variety of topics concerning online learning in higher education. General sessions focused on challenges facing higher

education in ensuring quality instruction. There was a good balance between broad issues such as encouraging student

communities in the context of residential programs and instructional methodologies. FTLC staff also focused on

attending sessions geared toward faculty training and professional development. Attending these sessions provided

opportunities to explore how other higher education institutions around the United States are implementing programs

and trainings to support faculty. One interesting model incorporated numerous tools such as Twitter, Facebook, Zoom,

WordPress and YouTube to reach faculty through a number of different mediums. Based on the information gained

from attending the OLC conference, we are working to identify ways to improve training and support our faculty.

Did You Know? Blackboard Retention Center

The Retention Center is a remarkable tool that notifies instructors when students in their course are at‐risk.

The Retention Center provides easy to‐use data visualization and pre‐configured rules for identifying

students that are in jeopardy of falling behind or failing a course. This tool requires no set up and

automatically notifies the instructor of students who may need attention, making it easy to respond to risk

factors quickly. Blackboard has four alert categories: Missed Deadlines, Grade Alerts, Activity Alerts, and

Access Alerts. Each rule has a default setting which can be customized according to the instructor’s

preference. To access the Retention Center in your course, complete the following steps:

1. Open your Blackboard course

2. Scroll down to the Control Panel

3. Click Evaluation to expand the menu

4. Click Retention Center

The FTLC is proud to announce the first CSUB educational video competition.

Instructor created educational videos can be a great supplement to any classroom, especially in the online or hybrid

environment. Showcase your Camtasia Studio recording and editing skills by creating a short educational video on a topic

of your choice. A group of panelists will judge each video based on specific elements. The following is a broad listing of the

criteria for the video competition:

•  Minimum of 5 minutes up to a maximum of 10 minutes in length

•  Educational topic related to one or more course objectives

•  Clear and audible with editing in Camtasia to enhance the sound

•  Created by the faculty/staff member with no assistance from the FTLC

•  Contain two or more Camtasia Studio elements (e.g. Transitions, Call‐Outs, Captions, etc.)

•  Can contain additional assets such as images, music, title cards, etc

•  All videos must be submitted as either an MP4 or MP4 with smart player.

More details to be announced soon. Please contact Anthony Bolanos at [email protected] or (661)654‐3907 for
