GRAIN PUMP LOOP CONVEYING SYSTEM

LAYOUT

The Grain Pump® Conveyor can be used in many different ways and operation can vary from

installation to installation. Thought given to proper grain system layout prior to conveyor installation

can prevent later problems in the grain flow plan and avoid possible “bottle-necks”.

A layout should be made to determine the exact location of conveyor, inlets, outlets, power source,

support and mounting locations. Grain pumps are an EXCELLENT LONG LIFE SYSTEM. They generally

do not require significant repair parts or other maintenance.

Use these general guidelines to help layout your conveyor system:

Grain Pumps are designed to move grain in one direction only and in a direction that does not allow

grain to flow through the take-up corner. Electric drive corners are located on the top of the grain

pump loop. If your system only requires one drive corner, it needs to be positioned above the take-up

corner. Leave adequate room to perform periodic maintenance. The conveyor will handle a wide

range of free flowing grains. It should not be used with highly corrosive material, such as fertilizer. The

life of the conveyor chain will be shortened when the chain is allowed to sit in water or is operated in

acidic conditions, so avoid these situations. The intake rate from other feeding conveyors should not

exceed the particular capacity of this conveyor. It is important that a firm, level foundation or support

structure be provided on which the conveyor can be mounted. This support should be ample to carry

the load of the conveyor when fully loaded. Locate outlets where connecting bands will not interfere

with outlets or control. Do Not cut or modify the tube connecting bands. Grain Pump Systems are

usually installed around rows of storage structures or flat storage buildings, with access for vehicle or

rail traffic. Grain bins may be conventional or elevated on a supporting structure with hopper bottoms.

Evaluate what other equipment may need access to the conveyor system, such as grain dryers or grain

cleaners. Systems have been used to transfer between trucks and rail cars with several temporary

storage tanks included.

Following are major items that should be considered when selecting a system and options:

A.

Type of material to be conveyed.

B.

Volume of material to be conveyed (bushels per hour/tons per hour).

C.

Duty Cycle: What is the usage cycle or annual expected hours of usage?

D.

Location and amount of material fed into system.

E.

Location and number of outlets.

F.

How will the conveyor be supported?

G.

Further expansion. Will more bins be added and where?

H.

The direction of grain flow.

Analyzing Facility Size, Loop Size and Storage Turns

(Specifically in selecting the Loop size and model)

• Determine the adequate volume flow rate to support your intended input

and output. The systems are rated in Bushel per Hour/ Tons per hour

capacity.

• Calculate the expected annual operating hours usage:

Total Storage Volume x Storage Turns

Rated Capacity of Loop

• Consider the material to convey and its abrasive characteristics as this may

be the determining factor for which Loop Conveyor is chosen:

• Use the Annual Operating Hours Chart for considering the Loop Model:

o

Usage classifications are a suggestion only, and even though an application may only call for a standard

duty pump based on the hours of operation, it may be desirable to use a commercial loop for other reasons.

SYSTEM SUPPORT INFORMATION

Towers or other adequate supports are needed to hold the vertical ends of the Grain Pump System in

position. Consider the weight per foot of a fully loaded tubular conveyor (see illustration below), and

the individual corners and other components, particularly the ones with drives which weigh

considerably more. The horizontal tubular conveyor should be supported with 25 ft. maximum

intervals without additional support. This can be done with vertical supports from the ground, from the

bin side walls, from the bin roof at the peak, or suspended from a building frame.

Consult the Bin/Building manufacturers concerning their recommendations for loads their

Bin/Building will support in these areas. Weight per foot of tubular conveyor:

Refer to the loop specifications for the weight per foot.

Calculate the weight for multiple drops, added features, bracing, catwalk, etc…

PLANNING A SYSTEM

1.

Is there room for a row of bins (silos) plus the possibility for expansion? These systems tend to

last a long time. Consider your operating plan, location of controls, power distribution,

driveway, and turn around areas.

2.

If planning a flat storage building, assure the building is capable of supporting the Full load of

the loop, grain, and catwalk (this load is in addition to your regional roof load requirements).

3.

Can spouts be run to an adjoining storage area if desired?

4.

If there is a dryer involved, consider separate conveyors from the wet holding to the dryer and

from the dryer to storage. This enables the grain pump to always be free for grain from the

field and keeps the low capacity, long continuous hours of use on less expensive conveyors.

5.

Consider two drive-over dump receiving hoppers for grain pump systems that will have many

trucks or wagons dumping grain. This will result in more continuous operation which can

almost double capacity.

6.

If larger/wider drive-over pits are desired consider the following:

a.

The wider the inlet is for the drive-over pits, the deeper or taller it will need to be to

maintain angle of flow in the hopper. The options are to lower the tube or raise the

driveway.

b.

To lower the tubes, spouts will have to be added to the inlets for the intermediate wells,

and the loop will have either a deeper trench or higher elevated bins.

c.

If the drive is raised, carefully consider the ramp grade, load design, side personnel

access, safety rails, and overhead clearance.

7.

A grain pump loop must have a climbable tower at each end and access to every overhead

drop. Catwalk can be considered for the full length, but it is generally not necessary if every bin

(silo) has a ladder extending to the overhead drop area. When catwalk is not used full length,

some catwalk may be needed to reach the drop over the driveway.

8.

Every component of a grain pump loop system should end up located above grade to avoid

water issues that can rust the conveyors’ housing and chain. If located below ground level in a

trench or pit, adequate drainage to daylight or sump pump is required. Assure landscaping

diverts drainage away from pit; covers should be used over any open areas to shed water.

(4)

iv

9.

When choosing a system size, consider capacity required now as well as into the future. These

units will handle a lot of grain before major part’s replacement is necessary. The loop is

modular, as length can be added in the future up to the maximum designed length for the

particular system.

10.

Plan for enough space between bin (silo) foundations to allow space for bin well controls (this is

outside space between bins). Concrete foundations, trenches and floors need to have

maintenance access and clearances considered in the design layout. Refer to the

equipment/component specifications to plan adequate space and clearances.

11.

If concrete is placed before the system arrives, the corner support pads should be lower than

the bottom of the horizontal tubular housing; there are support feet on the bottom corners

(refer to the equipment specifications). Again, if concrete trenches or pits are utilized, assure

maintenance access is adequate.

12.

Make sure there is suitable electrical power available. Single phase power may be used if HP

requirements allow.

13.

Make sure amp meters are used so motor loads can be observed by the operator. Soft start

electrical motor starters are recommended.

14.

Chain inspection ports are recommended. Utilize one inspection port between the drive-over

pit and the first loop corner to monitor physical tube fill. Utilize ports after each bin if possible.

Ports are for horizontal tubes only.

15.

Chain access section kits are available for use on the horizontal tubes only.

Grain Pump Quotation Hints

1.

To calculate the total length and height of a Grain Pump system add four feet to the height of

the bin, the adequate distance between bins, and the minimum of a twenty foot driveway.

2.

When using a two-drive system, make sure the horsepower demand between the two drive

corners does not exceed the drive rating of the furthest drive corner. It may be necessary to

choose higher rated drive corners in this instance.

3.

Deduct approximately 20 foot of tube, chain, and paddle for the Basic Four Corner system with

Drive.

4.

Deduct the appropriate amount of tube, chain, and paddle for each 90 Degree Discharge.

5.

Deduct the appropriate amount of tube, chain, and paddle for the Inlet Dump Hopper.

6.

An average bin system will need an additional connecting band for each 90 Degree Discharge.

7.

Add 2 sets of half bands per bin, plus an additional 6 sets for mounting supports to the Grain

Pump. Larger bin diameters may require more.

8.

Use one square to round adapter for each 90 Degree Discharge.

9.

Figure enough space between bins to allow adequate access to the bin well control kits (refer to

component specifications).

10.

Quote one center well per bin, plus enough intermediate wells on one side of the center to free

a sweep auger path. Add at least one more intermediate well for the opposite side next to the

bin wall. This will allow stable bin unloading. Since most systems are designed with false floors

and go through the center of the bin, quote two bin flanges per bin.

11.

If you use a rack and pinion control w/control pipe kit on the sweep side, plan for adequate

space and component usage for intermediate well(s) on the back side.

(5)

13.

Have an inspection port between the drive-over pit and the first bottom corner. If possible,

place one inspection port after each bin. Consider where to utilize chain access sections.

Installation of a Grain Pump Loop System

1.

Lift and install each component into place with the chain and paddles already in place within

the component. The chain in a section can be attached to the chain in the next section before

the connecting band is used to connect the housings. This procedure helps to assure all of the

chain and paddles are oriented correctly. Also, it is easier than pulling the chain through with a

rope or cable, particularly since a chain can roll over in a long length. If pulling a chain and

paddle assembly through, orientation should be checked through bin wells or drops visually.

2.

Check the manual carefully for tips on attaching the paddles to the chain, chain tension, oil

levels, etc.

3.

It will usually be necessary to cut some tubular housing to length for fit. This is often done

using a cutting wheel in a hand grinder. Be sure to mark the cut by marking the tube using the

end of a connecting band, or some device, to obtain a good straight cut. Do not cut with a

cutting torch unless time is spent to grind the housing straight and smooth.

4.

Be sure tubes are butted solidly together inside the connecting band. If this is not done, the

chain load will pull them together and cause the conveyor chain to loosen.

5.

Connecting bands must be tightened and retightened until all bolts are tightened evenly.

6.

Half bands should be utilized for any welded connection; do not weld braces directly to tube

sections.

7.

The auto take-up is recommended on vertical loops. The auto take-up maintains pressure on

the chain slack for a range of motion. Once the auto take-up is out of motion, the chain will

need links removed and the auto up reset for a new cycle. The location on the auto

take-up should be monitored on a daily operation pre-check list.

8.

For slanted loops, the manual take-up is required. Chain should be tightened with no slack in

mind. There is no need to over-tighten, but if a paddle can be moved or twisted without firm

pressure, it isn’t tight enough. A chain should likely be tensioned several times during initial

operation before the slack is out.

9.

Check and recheck the oil level in reducer drives. The gear reducers are shipped WITHOUT

lubricating oil. If oil is not added to the correct operating level, the reducer will be ruined, and

they are expensive.

10.

Soft-start electric motor starters are an additional cost, but they are recommended for grain

pump loop systems. This kind of starter is preferred by electricity suppliers because it limits the

size of the start-up surge on the lines. It also protects the grain pump from a large start-up

impact on components.

11.

Check the chain at low speed for missing paddles, missing cotter keys in connecting links, or

missing paddle bolts. This checking should be done before the busy season starts. Checks are

recommended at initial start-up of a new machine and on a periodic preventative maintenance

inspection plan. It is recommended to use a secondary drive to run the loop at a slow speed for

this inspection. A hydraulic chain inspection kit is available.

12.

Connecting bands should be placed at the 3:00 or 9:00 position. Place the bands so one of the

bolt flanges forms a drip edge over the top of the other.

GRAIN PUMP LOOP CONVEYOR INFORMATION

A Grain Pump is a chain and paddle En Masse conveyor moving through a round housing. A Loop system allows you to do total loading and unloading with a single drive. Grain Pumps will handle a wide range of free flowing materials. They are primarily intended for grain or grain products. They will move material into and out of grain storage structures, vehicles, dryers and other facilities with ease and gentleness. Grain Pump Loops are also well suited for blending materials while being transferred from one structure to another.

The height and length of a Loop system are limited by the combined power required to move grain those distances. The vertical component requires greater power per foot (meter), so taller units will be more limited in horizontal length. System lengths of several hundred feet are common. However, relatively small systems to accomplish more specific tasks are often built.

. Select a diameter size that will provide the desired capacity

in bushels per hour. Consider the possibility of future additional storage structures to

be served by a lengthened Loop.

System capacity.

This is expressed as the storage capacity of the bins or other storage

structures served by the Grain Pump. With a Grain Pump Loop, the same conveyor is

used to load, transfer and unload storage. Generally, larger capacity systems should

use larger diameter Grain Pump Loop machines.

System utilization.

Here we should consider how often the system storage will be

loaded, transferred or unloaded per year. How many bushels (tons) will the Grain Pump

Loop handle doing these operations?

System Life.

This is best expressed as hours of operation. The 6'', 8'' and 10''

(15.2 cm, 20.3 cm and 25.4 cm)

sizes can each be expected to operate the same

number of hours before repairs are needed due to wear. At maximum capacity an

8''

(20.3 cm)

system can be expected to handle twice that of a 6''

(15.2 cm)

before

repairs due to wear. The wear in some parts of a system will be nearly as great at partial

capacity as at full capacity, so hours of operation, and not just quantity of material

handled, must be considered.

There are several criteria:

A 6''

(15.2 cm)

system handling clean wheat or corn at full capacity should move one

million or more bushels

(27,000 tons)

before repairs due to wear are needed. Under ideal

conditions this amount could be substantially higher. Extensive operation at partial capacity

or handling material that is more abrasive (or containing dirt and grit) will result in less

material handled before repairs are needed. Larger diameter systems can be expected to

increase handling potential according to the values stated earlier. There are 8''

(20.3 cm)

systems reported to have handled over five million bushels

(135,000 tons)

with only routine

maintenance (primarily, keeping slack out of the chain). These values are not guaranteed,

but are offered to assist in making a system selection.

* These capacities are rated conveying clean, dry and non-abrasive grain.

Loop units are provided with Dodge gear reducer drives to be driven by one or two electric motors. There are maximum power limits for each drive, but when greater power than can be provided by one drive is needed, a second drive of equal power can often be added. Drives are always located at upper corners. A single drive must always be located at the top corner after the last discharge.

The power required per foot (meter) of conveyor (power factor) is given in the specifications chart on page 1.

Note that it is based on grain material of approximately 56 pounds per bushel (720 kg per cu. meter). Adjust the power requirements up or down for material of a different density.

1. Determine the vertical height of the system, usually the peak of the tallest bin plus 3' (1 meter). Multiply the vertical height by the HP (kw) factor to determine the vertical power requirement.

2. Add the total upper and lower horizontal length of conveyor that will contain material during operation. If you plan to recirculate the grain at full capacity from one storage structure to another, it may add length to the power calculation. Multiply the total horizontal length by the HP (kw) factor to determine the horizontal power requirement.

3. Add the vertical and horizontal power together to find the total system power required.

The intake rate should not exceed the capacity of the loop being used. Overfeeding a Grain Pump Loop may cause plugging. We recommend the loading rate be monitored by an amp meter on the electric motor drive(s), as well as a visual inspection opening close to the first corner where grain starts up. The Grain Pump will operate more smoothly, move grain and last longer if loaded 80% of fill instead of an uncontrolled approach to 100% of fill. “Soft Start” motors are always recommended to protect a conveyor from high torque shocks against a unit that may have inadvertently been stopped under load or plugged.

DESIGN CONCEPTS

1. Grain Pumps will handle a wide range of free flowing materials. They should not be used with highly

corrosive material such as fertilizer.

2. Do not exceed maximum lengths listed in the power charts.

3. Overfeeding a Grain Pump may cause plugging. Intake rate should not exceed the particular capacity of

the drive. Hutchinson recommends loading be monitored by using an amp meter on electric drive. Locate

the amp meter where it is easily visible to the operator. The Grain Pump will operate more smoothly,

move more grain and last longer if loaded at 90% of fill or less, instead of an uncontrolled approach

to 100%.

4. Grain pumps must be adequately supported to be rigid and straight. Supports should be spaced at 20'

(6.10 m)

to 30'

(9.14 m)

intervals.
