Introduction

This Continuing Professional Development (CPD) record is designed to help you meet the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Board (ANMB) requirement for all nurses and midwives to maintain a record of their Continuing Professional Development activities. For further information regarding the ANMB requirements, please refer to the ANMB website www.nursingmidwiferyboard.gov.au. The CPD Record template includes sections to record your learning plans and your CPD activities. Please remember to keep all of your support documentation such as certificates etc.

What can be included in CPD?

CPD activities can include a range of formal and informal learning activities that nurses and midwives undertake on a regular basis. The activities need to be related to your role as a nurse, but do not have to be a nursing specific activity eg. Cert IV in Training and Assessment for a nurse who works with students; a relaxation/imagery course for a nurse working in palliative care or; introduction to finance management for a Unit Manager or a nurse/midwife aspiring to become a Unit Manager. Whatever the activity, you simply need to state how it has enhanced/further developed your nursing/midwifery practice.

CPD activities can include:

• Education Activities – Formal post graduate courses, short courses, study days, inservices, self paced education, online education, self directed learning such as reading journal articles or textbooks.

• Teaching Activities – Teaching presentations to students or colleagues, conference presentations, acting as a preceptor/mentor to students, graduates, junior/new staff, orientating a new staff member to your work area, presenting an inservice.

• Participation in committees, portfolios or higher duties – Your involvement in hospital or professional committees can be included as a CPD activity. Many nurses and midwives represent their unit on a committee and/or hold a Continuous Improvement, OH&S, education or clinical specialty portfolio in their work area. All of these activities can be included as a CPD activity. If you undertake higher duties, or undertake a different role for a period of time you can also include this in your CPD activities.

• Other Activities – We have included this section to record any activities that are not covered in the above three sections Important Note: The ANMB requires all nurses and midwives to not only record, but also to reflect upon

You will find some examples on the next page to help get you started.

the CPD activities they undertake. Your reflection can be as long or as short as you like. It can be in long hand or point form. There are no set rules. The most important thing is that it illustrates how the CPD activity has contributed to the development of your nursing/midwifery practice. This development may include, but is not limited to, your clinical skills, theoretical knowledge, attitude or personal perspective, confidence level, ability to interact with others etc.

15/6/2008 Assertive Communication Program 8hrs This program helped me to develop skills to be more assertive and to

understand where others are coming from. I have already started to use some of the skills I learnt in the day and it has helped with how I communicate with the doctors when I am trying to get things happening for the patients.

14/3/2008 Preceptor for new graduate on unit 40hrs This has been a big learning curve for me. I enjoyed the experience but found it challenging at times. I had to be really organised and it gave me practise with delegation. Being a role model made me need to be sure I did things right. Answering all the questions improved my understanding of the procedures and I learnt a few new things about some of the drugs. Assessing the graduate’s practice made me more aware of the nursing competencies. It also helped my confidence.
