Dr. Hugh McCulioch, founding editor of
PEDIATRICS, was the recipient of the American
Academy of Pediatrics’ Clifford G. Grulee Award at the Annual Meeting of the Academy,
October 6, 1954. Dr. Grulee himself presented the award to Dr. McCulloch. This was doubly fitting as these men have been lifelong friends and fellow-editors for many years. In addition to Dr. McCulloch’s great contribution in estab-lishing PEDIATRICS and bringing it to a position of great prestige, he has served the American Academy of Pediatrics in many other capacities. The Clifford G. Grulee Award is the highest tribute the Academy can pay to a pediatrician.
The brief but profoundly sincere remarks cx-changed by these men provided an impressive and inspiring display of the humility which
accompanies true greatness.

WILLIAM E. LADD MEDAL ESTABLISHED BY SURGICAL SECTION OF THE AMERICAN
ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS
Children are subjected to diseases which
differ in many instances from those affecting
adults. This has been a major contributing fac-tor to the growth of pediatrics. It is equally true that the surgical diseases of children
fre-quently are unlike those in adults.
Conse-quentiy, to be proficient in adult surgery does not imply equal skill in dealing with children. The pediatric surgeon is fully trained in general surgery, but also in the diagnosis and
treat-ment of disorders afflicting the young patient. Dr. Ladd was a pioneer in the establishment of this field of surgery. He became Surgeon in
Chief at the Boston Children’s Hospital and Professor of Surgery at the Harvard Medical
School. In addition to supervising the surgical
wards of that hospital has devoted much time to the investigation of surgical problems en-countered in this age group. One of his greatest interests was the training of men for a career in 1)ediatric surgery.
The Surgical Section of the Academy and
the Academy as a whole thought it fitting to honor Dr. Ladd lw the establishment of a medal l)earing his name. This medal is to be awarded
from time to time to some person who has
made a major contribution to pediatric surgery. It is appropriate that the first recipient of this
medal be Thomas Hinckley Lanman. As Dr.
Ladd’s associate and co-worker he made many contributions to pediatric surgery. He was a pioneer in the surgical treatment of bronchiec-tasis and exstrophy of the bladder. He made fundamental advances in esophageal surgery. As Senior Surgeon at the Boston Children’s Hospital and Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Harvard Medical School, he has played a dominant role in the training of a considerable
number of men now devoting themselves to
pediatric surgery. After a long and distinguished service with the armed forces during World War II he returned to devote much of his time to major surgical organizations. Formerly First
Vice-President of the American College of
Surgeons, he is now the Chairman of the
American Board of Surgery. Dr. Lanman’s re-marks upon reception of the William E. Ladd medal appear in this issue of PEDIATRICS.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF PEDIATRIC RESIDENCY
FELLOWSHIPS TO BE AWARDED BY THE
AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS
The American Academy of Pediatrics will
grant twelve or more fellowships for pediatric residents for a period of 6 months to one year. These fellowships have been created to enable young physicians in financial need to complete their pediatric training. The fellowships carry a stipend of $500 to $1000 depending on the
length of time required to complete training
and the need. The fellowships have been made possible by a grant to the Academy from Mead Johnson & Company and will be granted as of July 1, 1955. The deadline for receipt of
appli-cations will be March 1, 1955.
Requirements for the awards: (1) a letter
from the Chief of Service indicating that the
proposed individual has completed, or will
have completed by July 1, 1955, one year of pediatric training credited by the American Board of Pediatrics; that the resident has per-formed his work ably; and that there is real need for financial assistance; (2) a letter from the resident reouesting the fellowship stating that he intends to enter pediatric private prac-tice at the conclusion of his second year of trainirg. Consideration vill be given to
but smaller training centers which perhaps have
fewer resources for assisting residents in train-ing than do some of the larger centers. Note that research interests and accomplishments
and desire to enter academic pediatrics are not
re(1uirements for the awards.
\‘Iembers of the committee on residency
fellowships of the American Academy of
Pedi-atrics who will make final decision on the
ap-pointments are : Dr. Harry A. Towsley, Chair-man; Dr. Robert B. Lawson and Dr. Stuart S. Stevenson.
Those interested in applying may correspond wit/i the American Academy of Pediatrics, 610 Church Street, Evanston, Illinais.

Tins CLIFFORD C. GRULEE COLLECTION ON
PEDIATRICS-THE JoHN CRERAR LIBRARY
The Clifford C. Grulee Collection on Pedi-atrics consists of some 4,500 titles, including
treatises, texti)ooks, research monographs, dis-sertations, periodicals and a selection of journal
reprints representing classical contributions to
the field. Of special importance arc the nearly three hundred periodicals and other serial pub-lications constituting a collection of 2,500 volumes kept current by subscriptions to pen-odicals still being published. Virtually every historical classic of the field is represented,
in-eluding the first two books published in 1472
and 1473.
The collection is universal in scope.
Publica-tions in many languages and from many coun-tries are included. Historically, the collection covers the span from the first pediatric work
published down to the latest monograph. The
entire field of pediatrics is covered including
anatomy, physiology, nutrition and growth,
child care, pathology and medical treatment of children.
The primaly portion of the collection was
brought together by Dr. Clifford C. Crulee,
Chicago pediatrician, who was for twenty-one
years Secretary of the American Academy of
Pediatrics and for twenty years Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Rush Medical College and Rush Professor of Pediatrics at the
University of Illinois College of Medicine. He
is still editor of the American Journal of Dis-ea.es Of Children, an office which lie has held since March, 1924.
This collection was given to The John Crerar Library in 1948. Many items have been added
by Dr. Grulec since that time, and the Library
keeps the collection current by acquiring every new pediatric publication which comes to at-tention through regular review of medical indexing and abstracting journals and
bibliog-raphies as well as trade bibliographies and pub-ushers announcements.
Pediatricians traveling through Chicago will
find a hospitable staff at the John Crerar Li-brary who will show them any of the items in the Grulee Collection or help them search the collection for special information.
