Newfoundland & Labrador

St. John’s: CARP’s first Chapter was founded on the Avalon Peninsula in Newfoundland & Labrador over 20 years ago. Indicative of the commitment of its members, Mr. Roy Church has just ‘retired’ from the local Board of Directors of the Chapter after a full 20 years of excellent service. Similarly, Chair, Ed Williams has provided leadership in the Newfoundland & Labrador Chapter for over a decade.

Nova Scotia

Halifax: Bill VanGorder is Chair of the Nova Scotia Chapter and has become the public face of CARP in the Maritimes. Bill is quite often the first person the local media will reach out to concerning issues such as affordable housing, older drivers, cuts in postal service, safety in retirement homes, fraud and financial abuse. Bill was also recently named a Director of CARP’s National Board.

New Brunswick

Fredericton: Suzanne Maltais, Chair of the Fredericton Chapter has made excellent use of her professional expertise gained as a nurse and her interest in community development to take on a leadership role in CARP in New Brunswick’s capital city. The Chapter has taken CARP’s call for a Universal Pharmacare program to the attention of the provincial legislature, and through editorials in the local media.

Quebec

Montreal: Our Montreal Chapter has been pursuing educational events for members in the West Island region, and recently worked with the Lester B. Pearson School Board to host a computer technology and social media workshop for CARP members.

Y

ou already know that CARP’s mission is to improve the lives of all Canadians as we age. This would not be possible without the commitment of thousands of active and engaged volunteer CARP members who take a personal role in the mission and values of CARP. They put a lifetime of experience and talents into action throughout their communities by taking on leadership roles in our Chapters. In cities coast-to-coast, a network of 60 Chapters are managed by local volunteer Boards of Directors who act as the eyes, ears and voices of the National Office, and keep the staff up-to-date on issues of importance to CARP members.

CARP Chapters are a strong, local advocacy voice, working the front lines of important issues including health and home care, elder abuse prevention, pension and income security, age-friendly communities – and the politicians are listening! But it’s not all work! Our Chapters organize social and educational events to keep members engaged and informed, and help to build a strong spirit of community and fellowship within our membership – all of which makes communities with CARP Chapters better places to live. Contributing to a proud and active membership offers endless opportunities for members to have fun and meet new friends.

Manitoba

Winnipeg: National Seniors Day (October 1) was celebrated in Winnipeg with the raising of the Winnipeg (East and West) Chapters’ Flag at City Hall, with local politicians and dignitaries on hand. There was a large turnout, and members of both Chapters were in attendance, including one member who donned a CARP fish mascot costume and made the cover of the local newspaper.

Alberta Chapters

Edmonton: Bernice Rempel and the board of the Edmonton CARP Chapter have been working together with the provincial Ministers of Health and Finance on behalf of all CARP members to improve pharmacare and pension security for all Albertans.

British Columbia Chapters

North Surrey: As Chair of one of our newest Chapters, Mr. Harpreet Singh, is helping bring CARP’s message to a diverse cultural group including members of the Sikh, Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist communities in the region. Mr. Singh is helping CARP to achieve our goal of being inclusive and a representative for all Canadians.

Richmond-Delta: Seeking an outlet for his skills and energy, retired dentist Dr. Victor Pauls volunteered to help lead a new CARP Chapter in his hometown, back in 2013. Recently, the Chapter was host to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s

conductor and musical director, Maestro Bramwell Tovy, at a classical music event to help bridge the

language divide between the English and Chinese members of the community. The event’s fitting

theme was “Music: the language of all cultures.”

White Rock: Proving once again that indeed, it’s not all serious, the powerhouses behind

the White Rock Chapter – Chair, Ramona Kaptyn and BC Rep, April Lewis – invited

80-year-old Graham Kerr, the Galloping Gourmet himself, to a recent Chapter

event. Kerr’s engaging manner had everyone in stitches.

Ontario

Toronto: Four active Chapters operate within the city limits – Downtown, Scarborough, Etobicoke and North York each boast their own CARP Chapter. In addition to working in their

own communities, the four Toronto Chapters often combine to create a powerful force for change in Ontario’s capital city. Representing over 45,000 CARP members combined, local MPPs, MPs and municipal politicians are regular attendees at their meetings and events.

Mississauga: Chapter Chair, Murray Etherington is the active leader for the thousands of Chapter members in the area, where legendary 93-year-old Mayor (and CARP member) Hazel McCallion is a regular guest at their events. Murray also represents the Chapter in the local Elder Abuse Prevention Network, and along with Toronto Downtown’s Chair, Adina Lebo, organized “Work Re-imagined.”, Canada’s first older workers job fair in 2014.

Ajax-Pickering and Halton Region:

CARP Chapters in Ajax-Pickering and Halton Region have shown outstanding leadership through community animation, holding regular social and educational events as well as being champions on important social issues.

Sudbury: Long-serving Chapter Chair, Ms. Pat Douglas stepped down from her leadership position on the board in early summer, but not before leaving an indelible mark on the Greater Sudbury Area after nearly a decade of service. Along with fundraising to bring PET scan technology

to the northern community, the Chapter lobbied for better service for seniors stuck between hospital care, home care and long term care, which resulted in the opening of the STAT (Short Term Assessment and Treatment) Clinic in conjunction with Health Sciences North.

A Cross-Canada Check Of

CARP’s Volunteer Chapters

(8)

That completes a short tour of just some of the many great

contributions CARP Chapters and CARP volunteers are

making every day in their cities and towns across Canada.

While we don’t have room to recognize everyone, it’s important to show how CARP Chapters advance our mission and help their communities. CARP’s Community Strategy provides opportunity for all members to be Involved – we want you to bring your ideas, to use your experience and talents to take action, and make a difference right where you live. If you are not already involved in a CARP Chapter, we encourage you to do so.

You can find out more about your local Chapter, or information on starting a new Chapter in your community, online at: www.carp.ca.

We thank you for your membership in CARP. Your support means a great deal to us. Without loyal

members like you, CARP would not have as much political clout, and our mission to advance the

interests of Canadians as we age would not be as influential or successful. You can help even more

by encouraging others; your friends, relatives and friends, to become members. There’s never

been a more important time to get involved.
