1. Unsurprisingly, there was a wide variety of approaches and tools used to manage commitments from the desk and on the run. This was not particularly technology enabled.
2. Most approaches did not integrate well with other technology and
there was little systemisation between strategic and tactical tasking.
3. There was a lot of good processes in the room.
4. MS Outlook (the dominant email tool) can be used as an integrated
tool for planning, updating, linking, sharing, executing and reporting on both strategic and tactical workloads by individuals and teams.
5. Richard uses Outlook Contacts (named ‘# projectname’) as the
repository for larger tasks, projects, initiatives and goals. Hyperlinks to other files are stored there for easy access to docs / excel / PP / mindmaps etc. and project related Tasks are driven from (and
therefore linked to) those #contact forms, thereby physically linking the strategic intent with the tactical task in one tool.

1. The majority of the attendees did not use a technology based
approach to CRM in their business. 30% used ACT! And 10% used Outlook Contact Manager.
2. There was a feeling that programmes like ACT! Were an added
complication which can cause confusion – ‘Do I execute this in ACT! or Outlook?’ One business owner reported using ACT! Much more effectively recently.
3. Richard has been using ACT! Extensively in his business for a
number of years. ACT! Is used for all Contact related activity and Outlook is used for all other business activity. He is currently trailing Salesforce.com ‘Group edition’ with a growing sample of contacts. So far so good, especially for £5 per month!
4. Migration of basic ACT! Contact records is relatively simple but
migrating ‘Activities’, ‘History’ and ‘Groups’ from ACT! For about 5000 contacts will cost about $2000 all in if we decide to bite the bullet.
