Message from Father Hinterschied

For those who revere democracy, the only legitimate way to affect change is through the ballot box. Sometimes who or what one votes for wins, and other times loses.

The greatest division in our society today is between those who privilege truth, and those who prioritize power. There are those of all political persuasions who despise truth. And that is a flaw, to put it mildly. Because from Augustine to Einstein,i the glory of our civilization has been its relentless search for truth. And when love for truth falls, as Augustine got to witness with his own eyes, the fall of our civilization is not far behind.

Two thousand years ago, Christ stood at trial. He said, "For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to bear witness to the truth." Pilate responded, "What is truth?" And that trial continues today. For over a millennium, we took the side of Christ by valuing truth above power; but I fear very much that we have more recently become the disciples of Pilate by valuing political power over truth.

The disconcerting displays across our nation both over the summer and over Christmas and Epiphany are the result of what happens when millions of people believe that they themselves are being deliberately locked out of a culture that is mismanaged by elites who brazenly make themselves richer as they grow poorer. In my priesthood, I've been privileged to meet Catholics from nearly every continent on earth, a credit to the Church and to our nation, and based upon my conversations with them, one thing that I have become extremely alert to is a similar degree of anger, contempt and disgust among them towards their own political classes for decades. May the lessons be learned by our fellow citizens.

May God bless America!

SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 17, 2021

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 17, 2021

COME AND SEE WHAT THE LORD HAS FOR YOU

Reflection on John 1:35-42

God does not seem to follow any pattern, protocol, or formula in making Himself known, or in calling individuals into relationship and gifting them for service. Over and over again, Scripture and countless stories in our tradition reveal that there is no predicting when God will come to us or how the visit might occur.

God can call the apprentice instead of the master, in the middle of the night while he is sleeping, as God did with Samuel. God can call an ordinary fellow out of a crowd of people at 4:00 in the afternoon, as God did with Andrew. Or two fisherman busy cleaning their nets, as with James and John. Or a tax collector hiding up a tree, as with Zacchaeus. Or an atheist walking down a crowded street in mid-town Manhattan, as with Thomas Merton. Or an old woman in her 70s, as with St. Mother Teresa.

“Come and see” – the invitation of Jesus we hear in today’s Gospel – can come to any of us, at any time, anywhere. When the invitation comes to you, even if you are, like Samuel, not yet familiar with the crazy ways of God, may you at least imitate his openness and innocent honesty by saying: “Here I am Lord. Speak, for your servant is listening.”

~ Fr. Jay

SAINT MARIANNE COPE

Feast Day: January 23 • Patron Saint of Lepers, outcasts, those with HIV/AIDS, Hawaii

Marianne held the post of superior in several places and was twice the novice mistress of her congregation. A natural leader, three different times she was superior of St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse, where she learned much that would be useful during her years in Hawaii.

Elected provincial in 1877, Mother Marianne was unanimously re-elected in 1881. Two years later the Hawaiian government was searching for someone to run the Kakaako Receiving Station for people suspected of having leprosy. More than 50 religious communities in the United States and Canada were asked. When the request was put to the Syracuse sisters, 35 of them volunteered immediately. On October 22, 1883, Mother Marianne and six other sisters left for Hawaii where they took charge of the Kakaako Receiving Station outside Honolulu; on the island of Maui they also opened a hospital and a school for girls.

In 1888, Mother Marianne and two sisters went to Molokai to open a home for “unprotected women and girls” there. The Hawaiian government was quite hesitant to send women for this difficult assignment; they need not have worried about Mother Marianne! On Molokai she took charge of the home that Saint Damien de Veuster had established for men and boys. Mother Marianne changed life on Molokai by introducing cleanliness, pride, and fun to the colony.

The government authorities were reluctant to allow Mother Marianne to be a mother on Molokai. Thirty years of dedication proved their fears unfounded.

God grants gifts regardless of human shortsightedness and allows those gifts to flower for the sake of the kingdom.

Epiphany House Blessing

The family gathers around the crib with lighted candles and recites the following prayers.

All: A Child is born in Bethlehem, alleluia! Full joyous sings Jerusalem, alleluia, alleluia! From Orient, behold the star, alleluia, And holy kings come from afar, alleluia alleluia!

The father reads the Gospel for the Feast of the Epiphany, St. Matthew 2:1-12

After the Gospel is read the following antiphon is recited.

All: From the East came the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Lord; and opening their treasures, they offered costly gifts: gold to the Great King, incense to the true God, and myrrh as a symbol of His burial, alleluia!

After the above antiphon is recited, the father sprinkles the rooms of the house with Epiphany Water or Holy Water. The rest of the family recites the Canticle of Mary, the Magnificat. Make the Sign of the Cross as you begin the canticle.

The Magnificat

My soul + magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, because He has regarded the lowliness of his handmaid, for behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed, Because He who is mighty has done great things for me, [All bow at this phrase] and Holy is His Name; and His mercy is from generation to generation toward those who fear Him. He has shown might with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He has put down the mighty from their thrones and has exalted the lowly. The hungry He has filled with good things and the rich He has sent away empty. He has given help to Israel his servant, mindful of His mercy as He promised our fathers toward Abraham and his descendants forever.[All bow] Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

All: From the East came the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Lord; and opening their treasures, they offered costly gifts: gold to the Great King, incense to the true God, and myrrh as a symbol of His burial, alleluia!

Father: Many shall come from Saba.

All: Bearing gold and incense. Father: O Lord, hear my prayer.

All: And let my cry come unto Thee.

Father: Let us pray. O God who by the guidance of a star did this day reveal Thine Only-Begotten Son to the Gentiles, grant that we who know Thee by faith may be brought to the contemplation of the heavenly majesty. Through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

All: Be enlightened and shine forth, O Jerusalem, for thy light is come, and upon thee is risen the glory of the Lord, Jesus Christ, born of the Virgin Mary.

Father: Nations shall walk in thy light, and kings in the brilliance of thy rising.

All: And the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. Father: Let us pray. O Lord, Almighty God, bless this house that it may become a shelter of health, chastity, self-conquest, humility, goodness, mildness, obedience to the

Commandments, and thanksgiving to God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Upon this house and those who dwell herein may Thy blessing remain forever. Through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

With the blessed chalk, the lintels above the door are marked with the initials of the Three Kings and with crosses. We use the form below:

Father: Let us pray. O Lord God, through the power of the priest, Thou did bless this chalk to make it helpful to man. Grant that we who use it with faith and inscribe with it the names of Thy saints Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar upon the entrance of our homes, may through their merits and petition enjoy physical health and spiritual protection. Through Christ our Lord.

All: Amen.

The initials of the names of the Magi are inscribed separated by crosses and the year above the main door in this manner.

Field and fountain, moor and mountain Following yonder star

Refrain: O Star of wonder, star of night Star with royal beauty bright

Westward leading, still proceeding Guide us to thy Perfect Light Born a King on Bethlehem’s plain Gold I bring to crown Him again King forever, ceasing never Over us all to reign

Frankincense to offer have I Incense owns a Deity nigh

Prayer and praising, all men raising Worship Him, God most high Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume Breathes of life of gathering gloom Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying Sealed in the stone-cold tomb
