The fourth grade science classes have been busy during the first two months of school! Our first unit focuses on mat- ter. Some concepts covered include states of matter, measur- ing matter, and what matter is made of.

As an introduction to the scientific method, students worked with Mrs. Hammerstein, our STEM teacher, to create a struc- ture that could withstand an earthquake simulation. Students had to make a plan, test the plan, and then make adjustments as needed. This activity also required students to work to- gether and compromise, understanding that every team mem- ber has a role and place in the group.

The students practiced measuring matter by participating in the gummy bear experiment. Students had a chance to meas- ure using tools such as rulers and scales. Students then placed the bears in a variety of liquids including water, salt water, vinegar, and water with baking soda. Students made a hy- pothesis on the impact these liquids would have on the bears’

measurements. Students found that some liquids caused a change in size, while others caused a change in shape or ap- pearance.

Scientists learn best through a combination of learning con- cepts and applying those concepts through experiments. In fourth grade, we strive to do this daily. As the year continues, we look forward to many more opportunities to implement science concepts to the experiments and projects we complete in class!

 Mrs. Christen Tice

Fourth Grade Teacher

Priests Convocation. It’s that time again when the priests of the Archdiocese will gather up north for its bi

yearly convocation. The speaker for the convocation is Bishop Daniel Flores, the bishop of Brownsville Texas, and former Auxiliary Bishop of Detroit. Bishop Flores is an excellent presenter. His three talks will be based on the Gospel of John. The convocation will begin on Sunday October 17 and conclude on Thursday October 21. Dur- ing that week there will be a Communion service each morning at 8:30 AM. Fr. Pathrose will celebrate Mass on Friday at the usual time. Please keep your priests in your prayers.

Families of Parishes. There are many challenges and changes in the near future as the Wave II parishes prepare for Families of Parishes organizational structure. Initially, St. Michael’s was to be part of an eightparish family.

This has now been reduced and the new family will con-

sist of St. Michael, St. Aidan, St. Priscilla and St. Gerald’s in Farmington. As the priests of these parish-

es begin to prepare I will keep you informed of what is taking place and the thinking behind this move by the Archdiocese. The simple reality driving this restructuring of parishes is that within the next 10 years the Archdio- cese will have at least 90 fewer priests than it does today.

As a priest within a family is transferred, retired or dies, the remaining priests will be called upon to operate the

remaining parishes in the family. Please pray for an increase in vocations!

CSA Update. The active phase of the annual CSA is still underway. To this point St. Michael Parish has contribut- ed in pledges and donations totaling $104,633 towards the goal of $128,263, leaving balance to raise of $23,628.

What has been collected to date is from 277 out of 1,460 households. I very much appreciate those who have giv- en. I respectfully ask those who have not contributed to prayerfully consider a donation. Any amount will get the parish closer to its goal.

 Pray for Your Priests!

 Msgr. Bill Tindall

EVENING ROSARY

WEDNESDAY, October 20 AT 7PM ON THE RECTORY LAWN

Please join us for a simple evening where we will sit out- side and say the rosary and the prayer to St Michael for any personal intentions. We are together praying about 20 minutes; it’s refreshing and peaceful. Bring your own lawn chair. If it’s raining we will be inside the convent chapel, otherwise we will be outside in the lawn in front of the rectory.

Are you interested in learning more about the Catholic religion? Do you want to make the sacrament of Bap- tism, First Com- munion or Confir- mation? Would you like to be- come Catholic?

Do you have questions about the beliefs and desire explanations of why Catholics do what they do?

Your questions and needs can be answered in our RCIA class² the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults²which is a process developed by the Catholic Church for people who want and need to do just that.

Our RCIA program began again in September, but it’s not too late. Check out the welcome video on our website www.livoniastmichael.org that is designed to answer some of your questions. I have had several inquiries for more details on the Holy Land pilgrimage.

Our first informational meeting at St. Michael is coming up in a few weeks.

If you would like to learn more, please join Fr. Jake and me on October 25 in the school cafete- ria.

We look forward to seeing you there!

We are also very excited to host local author, Colleen Pressprich, to discuss her latest book Marian Consecration for Families with Littles.

Join Colleen for this family-friendly event (childcare offered!) on October 27 from 7:00-8:30pm in the school cafeteria. Colleen will share her inspiration for the book, practical ways to use this with little and older kids, and be available to sign your copy.

All families are welcome, and will receive a free copy of the book at the event! Childcare that night will be offered in the school library for toddlers and grade school age children in the gym.

I look forward to having you join us!
