abstract

Peter Beruk

Business Software Alliance, Sr. Director, Compliance Marketing

To demonstrate how organizations can implement best software asset

management practices that align to the ISO/IEC 19770 standard, Peter Beruk

of Business Software Alliance will discuss the three parts of the ISO/IEC 19770

software asset management processes and what each means for effective

software asset management. He will also explain the benefits of smart SAM

practices and how it will help IT management professionals better manage

their IT assets. Using a well-executed SAM program, professionals will learn

how to effectively manage their software assets, increase IT efficiencies, and

proactively control costs while identifying and reducing IT risks.

agenda

 SAM Challenges today

 Why deploy SAM

 Standardization in SAM

 Overview of ISO SAM (ISO/IEC 19770)

 Benefits

(5)

what is SAM?

”Software Asset Management is all of the infrastructure

and processes necessary for the effective management,

control and protection of the software assets within an

organization, throughout all stages of their lifecycle.”

(ITIL)

(6)

setting the stage

 SAM is not a tool

 False assumptions

− Case study

“Firms have managed their core software assets not as an asset

for value creation but as an expense item to be minimized.”

(7)

why organizations implement SAM

 #1 - compliance

 Other benefits of SAM become

apparent

− Cost efficiency through license

optimization

− Operational efficiencies through

asset tracking

(8)

SAM challenges

 Rapid organizational changes

 Ease of software deployment (accessibility)

 Sheer number of vendors, brands, versions

 Complex licensing

 Inventory challenges (virtualization)

(9)

SAM adoption is increasing

Key drivers include:

 New standards (ISO, ITIL)

 Increased IT operational demands for complete and accurate IT asset

inventory information

 Increased awareness and education (including professional certifications)

 Increased enforcement by the software industry

(10)

standardization enables a cohesive approach

 Applies to all software (and vendors)

 Creates a robust, repeatable process

 Clear expectations

 Known outcomes

(11)

ISO/IEC SAM standard

 19770 was first published in 2006 and is divided into parts:

− 19770-1: SAM process standard

− 19770-2: Software identification tag

− 19770-3: Software entitlement tag

− 19770-5: Overview and vocabulary

− 19770-7: Tag Management

(15)

Software entitlement tag (19770-3)

Provides uniform, measurable data for the license compliance

processes, making it possible to demonstrate ownership of

entitlements, reconcile and demonstrate compliance, and optimize

licensing for cost reduction.

 Benefits - Publisher

− Easier customer recognition

of licensing details

− Better customer adaptability

to licensing changes

− Improved customer relations

through fewer, quicker, more

effective compliance audits

 Benefits – Customer

− Uniform Entitlements data

− Easier licensing remediation

− Improved SAM with
