➢ Multiplication facts and properties ➢ Multiplication Tables till 12

➢ Multiplying numbers by the multiples of 10,100 and 1000.

What will I learn?

➢ understand the concept of multiplication

➢ know some of the vocabulary related to multiplication ➢ understand the properties of multiplication

➢ understand the shortcut method of multiplying numbers by the multiples of 10,100 and 1000.

To Read and Understand:

• Multiplication is also called repeated addition

• The result of multiplication is called product.

• Numbers can be multiplied in any order. The product remains the same. This is calledorder property of multiplication.

9 x 7 = 63 7 x 9 = 63 9 x 7 = 7 x 9

• The product of any number and one is the number itself. 4127 x 1 = 4127

• The product of a number and zero is zero.

Multiplying with 10 , 100, 100

SHORTCUTSfor multiplying any number by 10, 100, or 1,000:

To multiply any number by 10, just put ONE zero on the end. To multiply any number by 100, just put TWO zeros on the end. To multiply any number by 1,000, just put THREE zeros on the end.

1 0 × 4 8 1 = 4 8 1 0 1 0 0 × 4 7 = 4 7 0 0 1 0 0 0 × 5 = 5 0 0 0

Note especially what happens when the number you multiply already ends in a zero or zeros. The rule works the same; you still have to put the zero or zeros.

1 0 × 8 0 0 = 8 0 0 0 1 0 0 × 6 0 = 6 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 × 4 0 = 4 0 , 0 0 0

It even works this way:

To multiply 40 × 70, simply multiply 4 × 7, and put two zeros to the result:

4 0 × 7 0 = 2 8 0 0

To multiply 600 × 4, simply multiply 6 × 4, and put two zeros to the result:

6 0 0 × 4 = 2 4 0 0

To multiply 7000 × 8, simply multiply 7 × 8, and put three zeros to the result.

7 0 0 0 × 8 = 5 6 0 0 0
