2020-21 Phase Three: Executive Summary for Schools
McKell Elementary is located in the rolling hills of northeastern Kentucky along U.S. 23 in South Shore, Kentucky. We enroll approximately 475 students in grades K through 5th, and employ a staff of 60. Seventy-three percent of the population qualifies for free or reduced lunch. We offer services that range from addressing the needs of gifted to those at-risk. Elective course offerings include: media, technology, guidance, physical education, art and music. Kids Place is an affordable after school program for students of working parents. It is open from 3:00 to 6:00 and offers homework help, due to COVID 19, Kids Place was unable to start on it's regular time. 21st Century is another after school option, offering assistance with academics and enrichment opportunities. The family youth service center is dedicated to removing non-academic barriers by offering a unique blend of programs. Students in need receive help with school supplies, clothing & dental care. We have established a number of collaborative relationships throughout the community. The Mason’s, local businesses and churches donate items to promote academic achievement and assist with attendance incentives. Shawnee University provides a local pool of
future educators. We work with their student teachers and practicum students. The Greenup 4H staff assists students with entries at the county fair and facilitates public speaking projects at school. The Kentucky Department of Wildlife sends a forest ranger to engage students on topics associated with social studies and science. We employ a part time staff member through Americorp. Our Vision:

We are data driven and use multiple indicators to inform instruction: 1) K-PREP, 2) STAR, 3) Brigance, 4) common assessments and classroom data. We believe that all students can learn and embrace the philosophy of growth mindset. In keeping with this mindset goals are based the individuals present levels of performance.
Kentucky Academic Standards serves as a guide for our daily curriculum.
Professional practice is examined in grade level meetings, staff meetings and during common planning. Professional development activities are driven by academic data, teacher survey input and results from teacher evaluation data. Our school partners with the community for a variety of activities. Sporting and club groups (ie., girl and boy scouts, 4-H clubs, lego robotics, cheerleaders, basketball teams, and the
academic team) use the building outside of the instructional day. To emphasize college and career readiness we host an annual career day. This year 35 participants represented educate students about the specifics of their occupation. We also
embed career education across the curriculum in classroom instruction throughout the year. At MES we seek to meet the needs of every child through a tiered service approach for academics and behavior. PASS is a tier 2 program that is dedicated to teaching appropriate replacement behaviors for students who are not progressing in tier 1. Academically we use multiple data points to identify students with specific deficits in reading and math. Research based interventions are provided by our specially trained RTI staff and progress is monitored to determine the effectiveness of interventions. Our tiered model serves as a safety net allows and us to address individual learner needs as we prepare them for middle school and beyond.
The notable achievements at McKell Elementary are that reading novice reduction by 4.9%. Students with disabilities had the highest growth rate in reading at 64.1 GAP. Math novice reduction by 1.7% and Math Distinguished increased by 1.7%. Mckell students were above state average in everything except reading. Academic proficiency in reading is an area of improvement. 50% overall scored Novice or Apprentice in reading. Focus will be on making academic gains towards proficiency in all subject areas increasing the number of proficient and distinguished students across the board. At McKell Elementary we strive to make continual progress towards proficiency. Preparing our students for the future is our number one priority. Due to the COVID 19 pandemic we are focusing on minimizing the negative effects on the academic progress of our students. Utilizing the opportunity to bring student in for small group instruction during the NTI process.
