PREFACE,
MINISTER FOR TRADE AND INVESTMENT,
PIA OLSEN DYHR
The most famous Dane of all-time, the story-teller Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875), once wrote that “to travel is to live”. He meant this at the individual level, in the sense of expanding your horizon, finding new inspiration and becoming more aware of your own identity by engaging with foreign cultures. That remains, of course, still the case today. As Denmark’s Minister for Trade and Investment, however, I firmly believe that travelling equals living in a much more literal and fundamental sense than the one that Hans Christian Andersen intended. In today’s globalised world marked by increasing international competition and the free-flow of goods, services and people across national borders, Danish companies must travel in order to prosper. They must aggressively embrace the enormous opportunities offered by globalisation and seek out business deals, technological know-how and the right international partners, wherever they might be. Fortunately, Danish companies have a long history of working abroad. They also have a strong track-record in joining forces with local partners in order to find innovative solutions based on Danish expertise, yet still tailor-made to fit the specific local needs in an optimised and sustainable fashion. The companies in the Danish Project Export Network are currently working on complicated challenges from the Arctic Circle to the South Pole. From creating state of the art bridges, hospitals, and airports to making healthy and stable supplies of water and electricity in remote areas. In the process, Danish Project Exporters are teaming up with local companies, and they employ local staff to a large extent. Therefore, projects with Danish Project Exporters will not only result in significant technology transfers but also in local training and higher income, which in turn can lead to a sustained improvement in local living conditions.
In Denmark, we enjoy modern and efficient infrastructure, and we are a country connected by trendsetting bridges, tunnels, harbours and airports. Thanks to an early political emphasis on renewable energy back in the 1970’ties in combination with long-term investments in a gradual “greening” of the Danish economy, Denmark is today associated with reliable modern utilities and we have become world leader in green-energy and cleantech. Denmark is also an advanced high-tech society, featuring a world class ICT infrastructure and the world's most e-ready population with the world's highest broadband penetration. The modern Danish society depends to a large extent on private/public partnerships and a well-educated population, but also on project networks locally as well as internationally.
As Minister for Trade and Investment, I will strongly encourage companies to continue to enter into large international project consortias. Formations of consortias or company alliances are needed to tackle the ever larger projects around the world in the future. With this aim, I am extremely pleased to present some of our most formidable companies within the infrastructure and utility segment.
