Wealth of experience,

depth of expertise

We have been supporting industry and commerce in Manchester since 1889. Today there are over 350 staff in the Business School and, as part of the Faculty of Business and Law, we have strong links with 75 staff in Manchester Law School.

Alongside their teaching duties, our academic staff undertake research, contribute to professional associations and maintain close professional links with employers. This ensures that your studies are informed by the latest research and we work with you to develop the skills employers expect to the industry standards they trust.

Accounting, Finance and Economics

Welcome to the Business School

Haris Chaudhri

The new £75 million Business School has allowed us to effectively deliver “technology assisted learning”, with an increased focus on practical aspects of

accounting and finance using a combination of online and offline digital resources, not only to prepare graduates for the real world but to enhance their learning experience whilst at the University.

Manchester is the UK’s largest regional hub for financial

and professional services. The Business School is equally

well connected with the sector and enjoys long-standing

links with employers and professional associations.

Gavin Brown

I am a qualified ICAEW accountant (PricewaterhouseCoopers) and MBA graduate from the University of Oxford. I also have previous industry experience in investment banking and as a hedge fund director in London. My current research interests focus on arbitrage, capital market efficiency and survivability.

Clare Guthrie

I am the UG Programme Co-ordinator for Accounting and Finance. I mainly teach management accounting to our first year undergraduate students and it is great to see them progress to graduation. We really care about our students during their studies and we have a strong team of academics and support staff both within and outside of the department of Accounting, Finance and Economics to support you throughout your time here at MMU.

Dr Dimitrios Syrrakos

My research focuses on the Economics of the Euro-zone and International Monetary Relations. Current research projects include, ‘Should Greece leave the Euro? Lessons from the Argentinean experience’. I have been invited over 40 times as a featured Euro-zone commentator on media including BBC World News and BBC Radio 5.

Working with UK and

international employers

We design and deliver bespoke training and management development programmes for employers. Companies trust and work with us because of our flexible approach and ability to adapt to their needs. For example, we have set up a tax academy with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) that enables their staff to achieve bespoke qualifications in taxation. Dave Hartnett, the former Permanent Secretary for Tax, said, “The tax academy will ensure that professional standards are raised in HMRC, with our people benefiting from faster and better access to the skills and knowledge they need.”

International perspective

Economics, trade and finance operate outside geographical boundaries. As an international business school, we ensure that your studies develop your perspective so that you become aware of how issues and policy decisions can affect the UK, Europe and the rest of the world. Selected degree courses also provide you with the opportunity to spend a year working abroad so you can experience the financial and business cultures of other countries, or to spend time studying at one of our 27 partner institutions in Europe, Australia, China or the USA.

Professional accreditation

and recognition

Many of our degree courses are accredited or approved by professional organisations. This independent endorsement reflects the work-focused nature of our courses and the practical skills that are integrated into your studies. For example, BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance provides the maximum number of exemptions for ACCA and ICAEW and eight exemptions for CIMA. This ensures that if you sit your professional accounting exams with one of these organisations, you will have fewer papers to complete and can qualify in a much shorter time period.

Achieving global standards

We are committed to achieving the international standards for Business Schools set by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and have been accepted into membership by AACSB. Once accepted as a full member, AACSB accreditation will support our reputation for global recognition and will underpin how at MMU we approach the student experience, research, innovation and international activity.

Responsible management

and environmental

sustainability

Social responsibility, environmental sustainability and an appreciation of business ethics are qualities we look to develop and instil in all our students and graduates. We work with you to develop your capabilities so you can become a generator of sustainable value for business and society at large. We incorporate into our academic activities and curricula the values of global social responsibility and give you the opportunity to interact with managers of business corporations. This enables you to fully understand the challenges of meeting social and environmental responsibilities.

Hub for business

The Business School is more than an excellent teaching centre. It also has a role as a source of advice and help for businesses of all sizes. For example, the Centre for Enterprise has worked with 1,000 business people, improving their leadership, innovation and entrepreneur skills to support the drive for growth in the region.

Accounting, Finance and Economics

Teaching rooms

The spacious lecture theatres and seminar rooms use state-of-the-art technology and enable our staff to deliver engaging and interactive classes. We utilise different room layouts to compliment different teaching styles– from banked seating in formal lecture theatres to Harvard style seminar rooms.

Study spaces

Each floor has a variety of study spaces you can use throughout the day and evening. These include group study zones, social study spaces for project meetings, and quieter areas.

Our magnificent £75 million teaching and research

headquarters is designed to be one of the finest and

most environmentally sustainable academic buildings

in the UK.

(5)

IT facilities

IT and printing facilities are provided in the technology suites. There are also laptop counters throughout the Business School for you to check your emails on or plug your own laptop into. The MMU-WiFi network covers the whole building and the park outside so you can keep in touch wherever you are on campus.

Comfort and convenience

Food and drink

The Hub Café and Hub Kitchen serve a range of drinks, snacks and meals. Both offer preferential prices for students. There is also seating in the catering atrium where you can enjoy food you’ve brought from home.

Lockers

There are 500 coin-operated lockers in the building so that you can store some of your personal belongings whilst you are on campus.

Rest rooms and showers

Selected rest rooms on the ground floor have showers. They are particularly useful if you run or cycle to the Business School and want to freshen up before your lectures or if you need to get changed in the Business School before going to work.

Student Hub

The Hub brings together our experienced advisory teams who are here to help you with accommodation, student finance, careers, placements and internships, Moodle (our web-based study environment) and accessing support if you have dyslexia or a disability. The International Office is also based in the Hub and provides a range of advice to European and overseas students from practical matters, such as opening a bank account in the UK, to specialist support on issues such as visas.

Library

The Sir Kenneth Green All Saints University Library is next door to the Business School. It is open year-round and 24/7 at peak study and exam times. The Library stocks a large selection of books and provides access to a huge digital library with journals, e-books and research papers. Library staff run regular information skills training sessions to ensure you can locate, access and select the most appropriate resources from the wealth of material available.

Campus life

The Business School is at the heart of the All Saints Campus. When you are ready to take a break from your studies, the Students’ Union, Capitol Theatre and Holden Gallery are just a short walk away.

Meeting graduate

employers

Each term there is a packed schedule of employer visits to campus. Organised by the University’s Careers and Employability Service, these presentations enable you to meet

employers from different sectors who are actively recruiting graduates. This is your opportunity to find out more about the company, the vacancies they have available, and their application process.

Mentor Match

The Mentor Match scheme puts you in touch with a recent graduate or an experienced manager who is working in your chosen sector. They provide you with ‘insider’ knowledge about their sector and share tips and advice to help you progress with your career.

Guest lectures

Each year we invite professionals to deliver guest lectures where they share their industry knowledge and insight with you. There is usually time before or after the lecture where you can talk to them as part of a small group or one-to-one.

Volunteering

The Business School has a dedicated ‘Xchange’ website where you can search for voluntary work experience that enables you to work for a business, organisation or sports club and develop your skills in accounting and finance or apply your skills and knowledge to broader business management tasks.

www.mmuxchange.com

Throughout your studies there are opportunities to build

your profile in your chosen profession by gaining work

experience, completing work-related assignments and

developing your network of contacts.

(7)

Part-time work

Working part-time or during the holidays is a great way to get experience of working in different sectors and developing transferable skills that are highly valued by employers. The University’s Careers and Employability Service has an interactive jobs board where you can find details of current part-time, graduate and voluntary vacancies.

www.manmet.prospects.ac.uk

opportunities to work on campus for the University. www.mmu.ac.uk/jobs4students

Placement year

A placement year can be an excellent opportunity to acquire high quality work experience and structured on–the-job training whilst earning a salary. There are also

opportunities for you to undertake a placement-based project where you research a business issue for your employer. This project can count towards one of your final year units and reduces your workload in your final year. The placement must be a minimum of 36 weeks but it will usually last for 12 months and takes place after your second year of study.

We have an award-winning placement team, who advertise vacancies and can help you find a placement. The team has over 25 years’ experience of matching students to employers. They advertise over 1,000 vacancies each year, organise an annual placement fair where you can meet employers who are actively recruiting placement students, deliver CV workshops, provide one-to-one advice, and will conduct a mock interview with you so you can practice your interview technique.

The placement jobs market is competitive and it is your responsibility to be pro-active and apply for vacancies. We recommend that you start researching companies and opportunities during your first year and apply for positions at the start of your second year. Finding the right

opportunity and the right position is important because if you are a good match to your placement, your employer could offer you a full-time position when you have graduated.

Aldi, Bentley, Co-op, Tesco and Debenhams are just

some of the employers that came on to campus last

year to talk to students about graduate schemes

and career opportunities.

Each year we organise events where you can meet

employers from the accounting and finance sector

who are actively recruiting graduates.

Accounting, Finance and Economics

Introduction

The accountancy and finance sector offers a broad range of career choices. As well as the traditional accountancy roles of tax, audit, financial reporting and management accounting, professionals in this sector undertake broader business management and advice roles.

This degree, which assumes no previous knowledge of accounting or finance, combines accountancy, finance and economics with business disciplines. Alongside the development of your accountancy knowledge, there is a strong focus on developing your management skills to ensure that when you graduate you have the full compliment of high-level skills that employers are looking for. For example, as well as learning how to write reports you will also have the opportunity to develop your presentation skills so that you are able to prepare well-researched business cases and financial reports and deliver your findings through persuasive, engaging presentations. If you choose the sandwich route, you can include a year’s work experience as part of your course.

All of our staff are professionally qualified and many fulfil advisory or examining roles with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) or the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). We are also an approved platinum learning provider for the ACCA.

If you are looking to become a qualified

chartered accountant, this course can give you a good head start. Both the full-time and sandwich routes provide the maximum number of

exemptions for ACCA and ICAEW and

exemptions for CIMA. This ensures that you will have fewer professional exams to sit once you have graduated and you will qualify in a much shorter time period.

Special Features

•Successful completion of this degree enables you to claim the maximum exemption of all nine Foundation papers of the ACCA, nine papers from CIMA or the maximum exemption of eight papers for ICAEW.

•Currently, we offer a range of professional and postgraduate programmes that enable you to complete your ACCA or CIMA examinations.

•This degree is also accredited by the

Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT). Graduates can apply for full membership of the AAT after completing the Level 4 Diploma Case Study Unit and working full-time for one year. As a full member you will have access to CPD programmes, networking events,

professional guidance and you may use the letters MAAT after your name.

•This degree is accredited by the Association of International Accountants (AIA) and provides exemption from the AIA’s Foundation Level and Professional. Level 1 papers.

•The degree enjoys a good reputation within professional circles and is well regarded by employers.

•Staff are student-focused and have developed innovative teaching techniques involving the use of Moodle, podcasting and videos.

Accredited by the UK’s leading

professional bodies for accounting

this degree enables you to acquire the

skills and knowledge for a career in

accounting, or to apply your financial

aptitude to broader business

management roles.

Alex Lawson

,

BA (Hons) Accounting

and Finance

Alex completed his placement year with Gazprom at their head office in Manchester.

“I was a finance intern and was part of the fast-paced Finance team, who are responsible for all financial processes and reports. The department consists of accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit risk and credit control sections that each have their own goals and targets set to deliver the best possible financial results for GM&T Retail.

“I was based in the accounts payable section, which was a team of 6, including myself. By being part of a small team, I got to know my colleagues very well and we worked very efficiently and effectively. My tasks included liaising with customers and energy brokers, checking that gas/electricity energy consumption was correct on purchase invoices, allocating supplier payments and inputting invoices onto SAGE 200 and SAP.

“I received extensive training on using SAP. When I first started I never expected that I would be given as much responsibility within my department as I have been. This shows the trust and confidence the team has in everyone’s ability to do their job efficiently.”

Accounting, Finance and Economics

Introduction

The financial services sector is very diverse and encompasses: banking; corporate and personal finance and investment (shares, bonds, pensions, property portfolios); wealth management; credit and risk management; financial planning; regulation and ethics; accounting; and economics.

By working in this sector you are involved in managing other people’s money and assets. This can be in a direct way, for example, you could be working for the investment arm of one of the UK’s high street banks or you may be advising individual clients about how to invest their money. To build a successful career, you need to combine an expert knowledge of the sector and its specialist products with excellent inter-personal skills. Communication skills are particularly important because you will be spending a large proportion of your day working with, and for, people. This is also a sector where trust and professional reputations are very important.

This degree, which assumes no prior knowledge of the industry, is designed to develop your high-level transferable skills and to equip you with the knowledge and understanding needed to succeed in this sector. Accounting, Finance and Economics

Introduction

This degree focuses on the finance of a business and the financial management of that business. It assumes no prior knowledge of finance but by the end of year two you will have developed considerable understanding of finance, enabling you to take up a placement in year three, should you choose this option.

During the first year of the course, in common with our other undergraduate Accounting and Finance degrees, you will gain a broad

understanding of finance and this will form the basis on which you build knowledge in subsequent years.

The second year will concentrate on developing and deepening your accounting knowledge and will begin to allow you to strengthen your specialist financial skills. This will incorporate both the individual and corporate aspects of finance and the law that underpins these areas.

You will continue to develop your finance knowledge in the final year by incorporating Corporate Finance. There will be the opportunity for you to choose three options, allowing you to gain a thorough understanding of International Finance and the Financial Markets, or to widen your knowledge by studying subjects such as Risk management.

Special Features

•Our BA (Hons) in Finance provides a wide platform from which you can develop your finance career, specialising in areas of interest to you or that are most appropriate for your chosen career.

•The degree is designed to allow you to gain a broad understanding of finance or to specialise in one particular area.

•This is a new course but our aim is to gain the maximum number of exemptions from

professional bodies, as with our established accounting and finance courses.

•All of the accounting and finance staff

teaching on the programmes are professionally qualified, many having a considerable level of practical experience in finance, prior to teaching.

This is an exciting new degree designed to

Introduction

Economics is about evaluating and comparing the costs and benefits of different courses of action. By studying economics you become aware of the factors, that influence and determine how governments, companies, financial institutions and individuals invest and allocate their money and resources. You will also be introduced to, and become familiar with, the economic principles, theories and models that are used to guide the decision making process.

We have more than thirty years’ experience of teaching economics and this degree provides a thorough grounding in the subject and enables you to pursue your own areas of interest within the subject. The skills you develop through the course are highly valued by employers and include analytical thinking, problem solving, the ability to extract essential information from complex issues, and high-level communication skills.

This degree offers two awards – BA (Hons) and BSc (Hons). Initially, all students are enrolled on the BA (Hons) award and your first year covers a range of economics and quantitative economic skills. You start to specialise in the second year through your choice of optional units, choosing the quantitative units if you wish to progress to the BSc. At the start of the final year, subject to your marks and unit choices, you can choose to remain on the BA (Hons) or transfer to the BSc (Hons).

Special Features

•This degree enables you to study for a BA (Hons) or BSc (Hons) in Economics:

•BA (Hons) Economics provides the broadest range of options from different economic specialisms. Topics may include: quantitative skills; statistical applications for business planning and forecasting; studies of economic policy; financial economics; and the European Union.

•BSc (Hons) Economics enables you to focus on quantitative skills and the units reinforce and extend the applied statistical knowledge you developed in the first year.

•In the final year of your course you will be able to specialise in one of four pathways, giving you the opportunity to reflect your interests in your studies.

•Our staff are research active and they integrate their findings into their undergraduate

teaching. This ensures that your studies have a strong theoretical underpinning which is informed by the latest developments.

•Staff are student focused and have developed innovative teaching methods including Moodle – the University’s virtual learning environment – podcasting and videos.

As an economist you will examine the choices that

individuals, companies and governments have to make

between competing alternatives that may be subject

to strict time constraints and limited resources.

Manchester Metropolitan University that I definitely benefited from was

my summer placement between my second and third year. I worked for the

Introduction

Our Joint Honours courses enable you to combine two subjects from economics and finance, thus developing your knowledge and skills of different disciplines, in parallel. This will place you in a strong position to make informed career choices about the jobs you would like to apply for when you graduate. It will also demonstrate to employers that you have both specialist knowledge of selected subjects and a broader awareness of the other functions. There are strong links between our Single Honours and Joint Honours degrees as many of the units (modules) are taught on both courses. Consequently, you will develop a good network of friends and contacts across a range of courses in the Business School and you will be taught and advised by our professionally-qualified and research-active staff.

If you choose the placement route, you will undertake a minimum of 36 weeks’ work experience as part of the course. This takes place after your second year of study and enables you to work for an employer, apply your studies to real-life business situations and add some very valuable work experience to your CV.

Course content

Each year you will study four units – typically two units from each subject in your Joint Honours degree. Detailed information will be available on our eProspectus,

www.mmu.ac.uk/study.

There are more Joint Honours courses available from the Business School and details are available in our Business and Management and Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations brochures.

Accounting, Finance and Economics

The Foundation Year enables you to gain the skills for your chosen degree course. Each year we accept hundreds of students from a range of traditional and non-traditional backgrounds who have the ability to study at university level, but don’t have the UCAS tariff points to enter directly onto an honours degree. The inclusive nature of the programme is reflected in the entry requirements and you may find yourself studying alongside students with BTEC, NVQ, A Level and other Level 3 qualifications, or students with relevant work experience.

The content of the Foundation Year is designed to ensure that you progress directly onto Year 1 of the linked honours degree with confidence. Since the Foundation Year is an integral part of a specific degree course, you apply for either a four year full-time course (Foundation Year + three year Honours degree) or a five year course (Foundation year + three year Honours degree and a placement year). The Foundation Degrees for this subject area are:

•BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance (foundation)

UCAS code N423

•BA (Hons) Economics (foundation) UCAS code M102

UK/EU students

There is a system of loans and grants available to assist students going to university. Your fees can be paid for by applying for a tuition fee loan and you will not have to pay any fees upfront. You do not have to start making repayments on student loans until the April after you graduate and only then if you are earning over £21,000.

The tuition fee for the full-time and placement degree courses in this brochure for 2014 entry will be £9,000. The cost of placement years for 2016/17 is still to be determined but as a guide, the placement fee for 2014/15 will be £680 and has historically increased by around 2.5% each year. This is subject to change, so please check

www.finance.mmu.ac.uk/studentsto determine the exact fee before you start your placement year.

Further information about fees, funding support and the University’s £4,000 student support package for new, full-time, first year

undergraduates whose household income is up to and including £25,000 is available from

www.mmu.ac.uk/fees

Foundation Year

The Foundation Year tuition fee for UK/EU students is £3,465 (a different fee applies for international students). When progressing from the Foundation Year onto the degree course the tuition fee increases to be in line with that charged for the Honours degree. Foundation Year students are treated the same as any other undergraduate and are able to apply for tuition fee loans, student maintenance loans and maintenance grants for the full duration of the course. Visit www.mmu.ac.uk/feesfor up-to-date information.

BA (Hons) Professional

Accounting

A different fee structure applies to this part-time course. Please see the website

www.business.mmu.ac.uk/pro-accounting

for more information.

International students

The tuition fees for students who do not qualify for UK or European Union (EU) status is £10,250 (2014 entry). There are a number of organisations that award scholarships to international

students. Many of these scholarships are awarded a year in advance so you are advised to start your research at least 18 months before you plan to start your course. In addition, the University has a limited number of partial scholarships which are made through the Vice-Chancellor International Scholarships scheme. Please see www.mmu.ac.uk/international/ scholarshipsfor more information.

We passionately believe that going to university is a real

investment in your future. If you wish to follow a

professional or vocational career then going to university

remains the best and most direct way of achieving this.
