A message from the Chamber ...

The Liberty-Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce would

like to welcome you to our growing communities. We

are currently preparing for tremendous expansion in

our region as new homes and businesses, new

trans-portation routes, new opportunities for jobs and

rec-reation, and new faces become part of the landscape

here in Southeast Texas.

As most are aware, the coming Grand Parkway

high-way project, with segments H, I-1 and I-2 passing

through Chambers, Harris, Liberty and Montgomery

counties will be the driving force behind this growth.

With these segments scheduled to be completed in

early 2022, there is much activity and preparation

be-ing made for the big changes to come.

We invite anyone considering the Liberty-Dayton area

for your new home or business to browse this guide

for a taste of what you can expect to find in and

around our communities. We are geographically

situ-ated where a variety of opportunities are within reach

for employment, recreation, and education. If you like

coastal activities such as fishing, boating, or just

strolling along the beach head south to enjoy the

warm breezes and waters of the Gulf of Mexico. To our

north you’ll find some of the most dense forest in the

country known as the Big Thicket, with a wonderful

trail system for hikers, a large ecosystem of plants and

wildlife as well as freshwater lakes and rivers.

And when it comes time to head for the big city,

Hous-ton and the surrounding area is well within a one-hour

drive to the west where even more opportunities for

leisure, work and further education await.

We greatly appreciate the individual members and

businesses who have invested in our communities

through their Chamber membership, donations and

volunteerism. We will continue the task of promoting

our region, helping people learn more about our area,

and assisting those who choose to call the

Liberty-Dayton area ―home‖.

Please contact us with any questions!

E-mail: [email protected]

Hours: Tuesday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

A major resource for genealogists and those seeking in-formation on area and state history, the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center houses a vast ar-ray of printed material and artifacts, with online access to even more information from state government data-bases, as well as educational, interactive learning exhib-its. The Center is the official regional historical resource depository for the Atascocita District, covering the ten county area of Chambers, Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson, Lib-erty, Newton, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto and Tyler. Some of the archives kept at the Center include record collections related to Governor Price Daniel, the Andy Kyle World War II Collection, the Papers of Representa-tive Martin Dies, Don Kelly Southeast Texas Postcard Col-lection, L.J. Whitmeyer Glass Plate Negatives ColCol-lection, and the Governor Bill and Vara Martin Daniel Collection. Visitors to the area around the main library will find sev-eral historic buildings from the 19th and early 20th cen-tury including the 1848 Gillard-Duncan House, the (circa) 1883 Norman House, the Jean and Price Daniel Home and Archives (right), the 1898 St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, and the (circa) 1930 Hull Rotary Building.

In mid-2018 the Center unveiled a new, state-of-the-art renovation featuring artifacts, images, historical docu-ments, and interactive media covering the region’s pre-historic era to the modern age. A rotating special exhibit will be altered twice each year.

The Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center was dedicated on May 14, 1977. The Center was constructed on land donated by former Governor Price Daniel and his wife Jean. The library houses many collections pertaining to local and regional history, and is an indispensable repository for those engaged in genealogical research.

The 127-acre spread of the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center showcases several historic buildings, including the Jean and Price Daniel Home and Archives (above), a 7,318 square foot house constructed in the early 1980s and patterned after the Texas Governor’s Mansion.

(Left): Introduced in 2018, an impres-sive, state-of-the-art facility inside the Center features interactive media, edu-cational exhibits, artifacts and more. (Right): The 1898 St. Stephen’s Episco-pal Church is just one of the historic structures found at the Sam Houston Regional Library and Research Center. The church is a one-room design with attached bell tower.

Liberty Bell

1710 Sam Houston Avenue (Humphreys Cultural Center), Liberty. 936.336.8901.

The first exact replica of the original Philadelphia Liberty Bell hung in a spe-cial bell tower on the grounds of the Humphreys Cultural Center in Liberty. The bell was cast by White Chapel Bell Foundry in London to serve as a symbol of the Liberty Muscular Dystrophy Foun-dation. It was dedicated on the Court-house Square in 1960 and rung sixteen times by the late actor John Wayne. The bell tower was erected in 1976 to cele-brate America’s Bicentennial. Due to damage from Hurricane Ike in 2008, the

tower had to be dismantled in early 2009. The bell is now on display in the lobby of the Humphreys Cultural Center while plans are underway to reconstruct a new tower.
