On March 22, 1972, President Nixon signed into law a measure

that established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 years

and older. These critical programs – commonly referred to

as Meals on Wheels – have delivered more than just nutritious

meals to homebound seniors in virtually every community across

the country. And, the dedicated staff and volunteers who deliver

these meals each week provide a vital lifeline and connection to

the community, which are sometimes all it takes to keep our

senior neighbors at home, where they want to be.

Meals on Wheels programs have come together each March

since 2002 to celebrate this and make sure seniors are not

forgotten

.

March 25th was a busy day at Meals on Wheels as it was

Community Champions Day, part of March for Meals month.

Community leaders took time from their busy schedules to gather

together and show their support for Meals on Wheels of Chemung

County. We certainly appreciated having them volunteer their

time and help deliver meals.

WHEELS FOR MEALS BIKE RIDE

Saturday, May 21st, the Southern Tier Bicycle

League held their annual bike ride to benefit Meals

on Wheels. Every Tuesday during the month of

May, Kent Goben from the Southern Tier Bicycle

League delivered meals on his bike with help from

people in our community. This year, one of the

cyclists who took time from their busy schedule to

ride with Kent and deliver was Elmira Mayor, Dan

Mandell.

Our Capital Campaign - It’s More than Bricks and Mortar

By Peter Wallin, MOW Board Member

I have served as a Meals on Wheels board member for 15 years. Several years ago MOW established a

Building Expansion Team (BET) to explore options to better serve our community for the next 30 years, knowing

that we were outgrowing our existing facility. The team worked long and hard creating a plan, evaluating

locations and various opportunities that came before us. We now own a new building and construction is under

way!

I have never been more excited than I am now! I was honored to serve as master of ceremonies for the

ground-breaking event held in late June. Several community dignitaries along

with board members, staff and volunteers were on hand to commemorate

this historic moment. We will be creating a facility that will allow us to

function and grow properly for generations ahead.

Our Capital Campaign

Raising money is not an easy thing. In fact, it’s quite hard. I must say

I have been very pleased with the results so far. We have received well

over 200 donations totaling over $475,000. We still have a long way to go,

expecting Phase 1 of the plan, the costliest phase, to be about $1.2 million.

The future of Meals on Wheels is not about bricks and mortar. It’s

about serving people: your loved ones, your neighbors and your friends.

Providing nutritious meals on a daily basis continues to be the focus of

our mission

I thank you for your gift to the Capital Campaign. If you have not yet contributed, please consider

supporting us. You can donate at via cash, check, credit card, stock transfer or at

www. mealsonwheelschemung.org

We greatly appreciate you!

Meals on Wheels America National Campaign

America, Let’s Do Lunch

While you read this, and as we go about our busy day, 1 in 6

seniors will face the threat of hunger, right here in America. And

nearly 25% of that number live alone in isolation. With the senior

population expected to double by 2050, this situation will

undoubtedly become even more dire. This is why community-based

programs like Meals on Wheels of Chemung County, with a

dedicated mission of reaching these people, are so important. We

strive to provide tasty, nutritious meals to sustain our clients, along

with friendly visits to keep them connected and remain in their

own homes, where they want to be.

With this in mind, it’s clear that now is the time for a surge in

our efforts and our energy. Launched on July 12, 2016, a new campaign which is based upon

comprehensive research development, “America, Let’s Do Lunch” , highlights the 2.4 million seniors

that Meals on Wheels chapters serve each year. This campaign invites Americans to donate their

lunch break to help serve those in our senior community that struggle with hunger and isolation each

day, and to celebrate them as the bright and unique individuals they really are.

To learn more, please go to AmericaLetsDoLunch.org or call us at 607-734-9535 to see how you can

Welcome to the Chemung County Fair

This year some of our staff from Meals on Wheels not only attended the

Chemung County Fair, but participated as well. Beverly entered 9

beautiful flower arrangements in various categories ranging from the 3

inch mini, to three foot old fashioned arrangements. All of her entries

took first place with one winning ‘Best in Show’. Liz entered a variety

of scrumptious baked goods. She won first place for her cut-out, frosted

sugar cookies and banana bread and second place for her cinnamon rolls

and chocolate chip cookies. Faith’s daughter, Hailey, entered 2 market

hogs and one pet heifer for judging in the 4-H and the open show. Of

course, watching Liz milk a goat was ‘udderly’ amazing. We are proud

of these ladies for all their hard work and participation in the Chemung

County Fair.

Notes From The Kitchen

From Beverly Dalymple

We are proud to announce that another member of our kitchen staff here at Meals on Wheels

has received his ServSafe certification. ServSafe certificates are awarded by the National

Restaurant Assoc. to those who attend a lengthy class and pass the test which follows the

course. The class curriculum includes training in safe food handling and preparation, health

and hygiene, food storage and regulatory compliance. Congratulations Mike!

Though it’s been a hot and dry summer our friend, Mr. Janowski has once again been

providing us with some wonderful produce. Because of his generous donations we are able to

provide our clients with delicious fresh salads and side dishes. Thank you Sir!

We here in the kitchen are looking forward to moving into our new facility in a few months.

With a constantly growing client base our job is becoming more difficult every day. I’m sure a

roomy new kitchen with plenty of elbow room will make us wonder how we ever managed out of

the tight quarters we are working in now!

ANNUAL VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION PICNIC

On June 3rd, Meals on Wheels of Chemung County hosted our annual picnic to celebrate and

honor the many volunteers that are so vital to our success. These dedicated people make time

to do their part in helping us accomplish our mission to make sure No Senior Goes Hungry.

As always, our Board of Directors and staff members worked

together to make this event a success, offering an variety of

picnic fare, smiles, and the muscle from set up to clean up.

This year we were entertained by the sounds of

DJ Biggie Entertainment.

Thanks to all who made this event possible, and our selfless

volunteers that give of themselves the entire year!

Thank you “Friends

02/01/2016—07/31/2016

We are deeply grateful to our donors, without whom we would not have sufficient resources to

continue this program. Many of our clients cannot afford the basic cost of a hot meal, $5.00, but they pay

what they can. Government funding does not cover the cost of serving those who cannot afford meals. Nearly

2/3 of those we serve are on special diets – diabetic, low-fat, low-sodium, soft, pureed, and other diets related

to serious health problems. Over 200 volunteers willingly give of their time and vehicles to prepare, package and de

liver the meals. Please continue to help us serve those in greatest need

. As with anything, we try to be absolutely

perfect, but sometimes make mistakes. Please accept our apologies in advance if there are errors in this

wonderful donor list and let us know of any corrections needed.

Endowment Fund—Security For Our Future

The financial success of Meals on Wheels of Chemung County has always depended upon a strong volunteer

base, United Way and governmental funding and generous support from caring citizens. Because the government

funding is not within our control, we have taken an important step to help us have more control over the success of

our important service.

An Endowment Fund was established a few years ago to protect us in the event that some of the funding we

receive should decrease, or stop. The Board has contracted with a local, professional investment firm to

conservatively manage this fund to enable growth and safety of principal. The Endowment Fund will grow as we

receive donations through a Will, or donations of securities.

During 2015, Meals on Wheels of Chemung County served more than 85,000 meals to 2,100 residents of

Chemung County. The average client age is 83 years, with more than 50% having income below the poverty level.

Our program is a very important part of the quality of life in our community, and we are looking for you help to

ensure our continued financial security. If you, or someone you love has received Meals on Wheels, please consider

supporting our efforts. To learn more about our endowment Fund call our office and we will send you information,

or visit our web site at
