ARENA/STADIUM EVENTING

GUIDELINES

Preamble

Arena Eventing is currently being run on an Ad Hoc basis by a number of Clubs and Yards. This type of event has great potential to contribute to increasing the number of Eventers, and to the training of horses and riders. The event provides show jumping and cross-country experience in and adjacent to a show jumping arena. The use of cross-country obstacles such as corners, off-set fences and other questions found on the cross-country course with conventional show jumping obstacles gives a different experience to competitors. This contributes to the understanding of the role of speed in riding. Riders are able to introduce themselves and their horses to cross-country problems in a situation where some poles fall down. Unlike the cross-country test in Eventing, all jumping is also visible to the instructor. The courses should be encouraging for their standard, providing the

opportunity for horse and riders to gain experience of a higher grade. In general, Instructors can encourage riders to try Eventing.

Guidelines

In order to achieve some “standardisation” for these competitions, so that all role players know what to expect regardless of where the competitions are held, it is suggested that these Guidelines are followed. This will also allow competitions to be linked to form a series. These guidelines were developed in a workshop with local riders, instructors and officials and input from an International TD/CD to ensure that the basics of eventing are covered in these events.

It is recommended that:

• 6 to 7 show jumping fences are followed by 8 to 12 cross-country fences and finishing with the last fence, the joker fence. The joker fence will be approximately 10cm higher than the rest of the course, if you knock down the joker fence you will incur 6 penalties.

o There will be 3 to 6 proper non-knockable cross-country fences.

o Knockable cross-country fences must look solid, like a true cross-country fence. o The non-knockable fences must be properly secured.

o If a pole is used to alter the height on top of a fixed cross-country obstacle, this must o be fixed to the obstacle in the normal manner. No loose poles on fixed obstacles. o Course length 800m to 1200m

• The competition is run under Eventing Show Jumping Rules except for stops or unauthorise circles, which is unique to this competition.

o 4 faults for fence down, a stop or unauthorised circle o 3 stops or unauthorised circle results in elimination

(12)

12

• The course is split into two sections with times set and judged for penalties per section.

o For the show jumping section – speeds as for Eventing show jumping at the level being jumped.

o For the cross-country section – speeds within these bands o Ev65 360 -- 400 o Ev75 375 – 410 o Ev85 390 – 425 o Ev95 400 – 440 o 1* 420 - 460 o 2* 430 – 470

The speeds must take into account the technicality of the jumps, turns and distances between jumps. Course Designers and SHB are invited to send a course map with this information the Officials/Technical committee for assistance.

o Cross country and show jumping rules apply, where applicable. o In the case of equality after the first round, either

o A Jump Off is run over a single phase, with show jumping and only knockable cross country fences.

OR

o The winner is the closest to the optimum time, either under or over the cross country section. If ties continue, then the winner is closest to the optimum time, either under of over for the show jumping section.

• Stop watches are NOT permitted

• Body protectors as per Eventing are compulsory.

• Competitors are only eligible to enter at the level that they are qualified to do so for • conventional eventing.

• Course should be laid out by a knowledgeable CD.

• Judging and time keeping are carried out by people with the appropriate knowledge. • Because these events are not held under Eventing SA/SAEF, who carry the appropriate
