OS X Server Essentials v10.10
Facility Guidelines
This document provides details about minimum classroom requirements for hosting “OS X Server Essentials v10.10.”
The customer is responsible for the following:
• Providing all hardware and software described in this document • Providing room, network, and projection system setup
• Installing the software before the first day of class
Please allow one to two days before the start of class for setting up, configuring, connecting, and testing the classroom equipment. Additionally, the instructor will need to access the classroom 24 hours before the start of class, and may need after-hours or weekend access throughout the training event.
To ensure maximum compatibility between the hardware and the software versions that will be used at the onsite location, we encourage you to discuss the specific hardware and software that you will use for the training course with Business Rules. If the minimum requirements outlined in this document are not met, students will be unable to meet certain course objectives.
Classroom
• A workspace must be provided for the instructor and for each student in the class. • The instructor’s workspace should be located at the front of the classroom and
have access to the Internet, an Ethernet cable for the classroom network, a power outlet, and a VGA or DVI cable for the projection system.
• Each student workspace must be able to accommodate two computers and an opened workbook. Each student must be provided with workstation-style seating (as opposed to a shared conference table workspace).
• There must be a location for a classroom server, with an Ethernet cable for the classroom network, cables for the video and USB switchbox, and a power outlet. • Power outlets need to be provided for all computers, monitors, and peripheral
devices used in the class, and should provide approximately 5 amps of power for each device.
• A projection screen, as specified in the Projection System section below, must be provided at the front of the classroom and at a reasonable distance from the students.
• A wall-mounted or freestanding whiteboard (with dry-erase markers and erasers) should be located at the front of the classroom.
• Lighting and temperature controls should be adjustable.

Printer
• An OS X Yosemite–compatible inkjet or laser printer with network connectivity or appropriate interface cable
Projection System
The projection equipment must be on a sturdy table or stand, or ceiling-mounted. Access to a spare bulb or backup projector is recommended.
The projection system must meet these minimum standards:
• Resolution of 1680 x 1050 pixels at 75 Hz (HD resolution and 16:9 widescreen are preferred)
• Projection rating of at least 2000 lumens • Projection screen at least 6 feet x 6 feet
• Appropriate cables to connect the instructor’s presentation computer to the projection system without impeding movement through the classroom
Network (Required. Please read carefully.)
• Gigabit Ethernet switch with at least two ports per student plus an additional two ports for the instructor
• Each student computer and both instructor computers should be connected to the same Ethernet classroom network.
• The classroom network should be connected to the Internet via a router at the IP address 10.0.0.1 (with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0). An AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express base station is recommended for this purpose, but many other routers can be configured to meet this requirement.
• The classroom Internet connection must allow direct (non-proxied) HTTP and HTTPS traffic. (Note, however, that double-NAT is generally acceptable as long as the outer network’s IP address range does not include 10.0.0.0-255.) Specifically, for the Profile Manager service, TCP ports 2195 and 5223 need to be open; all traffic to and from the 17.0.0.0/8 network should be open.
• Except for the classroom router, the classroom network should be isolated (i.e., no connections other than the classroom computers).
• Access to at least one Internet-connected Wi-Fi network that is visible (non-hidden SSID)

Software
Customer must purchase a copy of the relevant software for every student and instructor station. For Yosemite and OS X Server, we recommend the following:
• If the classroom computers came with OS X Yosemite and/or OS X Server, no additional license is required.
• Exercise 15.1, “Create NetInstall Images,” requires the “Install OS X Yosemite” application to be available to students.
• Customers with fewer than 20 seats must purchase an individual copy of Yosemite and OS X Server for each seat. Because the App Store allows only one copy of each per Apple ID, customers must set up a unique Apple ID for each student station. These Apple IDs can all be set up on one computer, and can use the same credit card. Please note: These Apple IDs are different from the Apple IDs required for student exercises in Yosemite classes.
Two dedicated student computers must be provided for each student in the class. Software installations should be identical for all student computers. Because systems may be re-imaged before the start of class and repartitioned during class, provide only systems with hard disks that can be erased. Customers are solely
responsible for production data.
Student System (two systems per student)
• OS X Yosemite-compliant Macintosh computer with OS X Yosemite installed, including an OS X Recovery partition
• Minimum of OS X Yosemite v10.10 or later installed and at least 2 GB of RAM • A single display with minimum resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, 16-bit resolution • Appropriate disk space to install all applications (OS X Server requires 10 GB free
disk space)
• Directly connected or built-in mouse/trackpad and keyboard

OS X Server Essentials v10.10
• For the exercise to create a NetInstall image, the student’s server computer and administrator must both have a built-in FireWire port OR both have a built-in Thunderbolt port, along with the appropriate cable to connect the two computers using their FireWire or Thunderbolt ports.
• Built-in Ethernet port, or a Thunderbolt Gigabit Ethernet adaptor • Internet access
• One USB drive (at least 1GB in capacity) per student (note that the drive will be erased during class and must be erased again after class)
The instructor systems include one client computer from which to display the slides and demonstrate OS X Yosemite, and one server computer to provide required classroom network services. Because systems may be re-imaged before the start of class, provide only systems with hard drives that can be erased.
Instructor System 1 (Server)
• OS X Yosemite Server-compliant Macintosh computer with OS X Yosemite and OS X Server installed (the instructor guide includes configuration instructions)
• At least 2 GB of RAM
• Display with minimum resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, 16-bit resolution
Instructor System 2 (Presentation)
• OS X Yosemite-compliant Macintosh computer with OS X Yosemite installed • At least 2 GB RAM
• Video output for connection to projector
• Display with minimum resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, 16-bit resolution • At least one external connected USB device (e.g., a mouse)
