Position and Duties

The Airport Department is currently recruiting to fill a Senior Maintenance Worker vacancy within the Maintenance Services Section. The Airport Maintenance Services Section is responsible for the maintenance, repair and improvements to Airport building facilities and properties on a seven day a week, twenty-four hour a day operation

schedule.

The Senior Maintenance Worker leads groups of six to eight employees comprised of Maintenance Assistants, Maintenance Workers and Facility Repair Workers. The majority of the work performed by the Senior Maintenance Worker is highly skilled repair work in the field.

Typical duties for this position include, but are but are not limited to:

- Providing lead direction in the maintenance and repair of Airport Terminal Buildings, including plumbing systems, sump pumps, sanitary lift pumps, and restroom fixtures.

- Repairing damaged walls, construction of new walls, repairing automatic door systems, and door hardware.

- Repairing floor coverings including carpeting, ceramic tile, and composition tile and wood

- Repairing roofing systems including single ply, built up roofs and drainage systems. - Maintenance and reconstruction of: streets, roadways, Airport ramp areas, parking

lots, chain link fencing, turf maintenance, area seeding and planting, tree trimming and upgrades to landscaping, irrigation systems, streets and roadways.

- Development of work priorities and the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) program.

- Leading the Zone Maintenance work programs and assisting the Airport Maintenance Supervisor on a daily basis in facilitating this program.

- This position may be assigned to work any days of the week or be assigned to any of the three shifts.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience equivalent to:

1. Education: Successful completion of high school, General Education Development (G.E.D.) Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.

2. Experience: Six (6) years of increasingly responsible sub-professional

engineering/technical support experience of which two (2) years must have been in a position comparable to the level of a City of San José Associate Engineering Technician, Associate Construction Inspector, Instrument Person (in Land Surveying), or close equivalent.

3. Acceptable Substitutions: Successful completion of two (2) academic years or sixty (60) semester units of college level engineering technology courses or related field may be substituted for the remaining two (2) years of sub-professional engineering/technical support experience. There will be no substitute for the education requirement.

4. Licenses or Certificates: Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California.

The ideal candidate will possess the following competencies, as demonstrated in past and current employment history. Desirable competencies for this position include:

1. Job Expertise - demonstrates knowledge of and experience with applicable professional/technical principles and practices, Citywide and departmental procedures/policies and federal and state rules and regulations including: - Knowledge of the safe operation of motor vehicles and equipment.

- Knowledge of workplace safety practices and precautions. - Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures.

- Knowledge of safety rules in using herbicides, pesticides, insecticides, and other chemicals.

- Ability to read and interpret sketches, plans, blueprints, and diagrams. - Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

- Ability to estimate and order materials necessary for work completion. - Ability to perform arithmetic calculations and to make simple measurements. - Ability to prepare reports and keep records of work completed, time spent, and parts, supplies, and materials used.

- Ability to deal with the public.

- Ability to lift heavy weights of 20-100 pounds.

2. Job Expertise - Demonstrates experience and knowledge of general materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in the troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of buildings and equipment at City facilities, including plumbing, carpentry, automatic door systems, floors, irrigation systems, streets and roadways.

3. Accountability - manages performance to achieve expected results.

4. Computer Skills - experienced with common business computer applications including but not limited to: MS Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Access, and MS

Excel. Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to create work orders, track labor and create Daily Activity Reports is desirable.

5. Supervision - sets effective long and short-term goals based on a good understanding of management practices; establishes realistic priorities within available resources. 6. Reliability - completes quality work assignments in a timely and efficient manner; fulfills responsibilities and maintains confidentiality as appropriate. Is willing and able to work shift work including weekends and holidays.

7. Communication Skills - communicates and listens effectively and responds in a timely, effective, positive and respectful manner; written reports and correspondence are accurate, complete, current, well-organized, legible, concise, neat, and in proper

grammatical form. Selection Process

activities you performed using these applications including any experience you may have using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for generating work orders, tracking labor and creating Daily Activity Reports.
