IBM TotalStorage SAN Integration Server 2146
Uses Virtualization Technology to Help Improve
Storage Utilization
Overview
The IBM TotalStorage SAN Integration Server is designed to address the complexities associated with Storage Area Networks and the rising costs associated with storage growth. The SAN Integration Server is an integrated solution combining hardware, software, and optional services providing virtualization and automation capabilities for the storage infrastructure, to enable delivery of on demand storage. The IBM TotalStorage SAN Integration Server is a modular solution for those customers who seek to enhance their existing storage infrastructure. It integrates the virtualization technology of the IBM TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller, industry-leading SAN Fibre Channel fabric switches, and IBM′s TotalStorage FAStT Storage Servers into a comprehensive, prepackaged, highly available solution.
Using virtualization technology, the SAN Integration Server creates a pool of managed disks from the integrated storage subsystems, which can then be mapped to a set of virtual disks useable by host server applications. This gives you the capability to improve your storage utilization through better allocation of unused storage capacity to enable your business to become more efficient and resilient. To help reduce complexity within the data center, you can manage all virtualized storage from a single view.
The solution is also capable of assuming some basic management tasks, such as monitoring the health of the cluster. The cluster can automatically take actions to support continuous operations. These autonomic capabilities can help you achieve the on demand operating
capabilities necessary in today′s world.
The SAN Integration Server is designed for high data availability environments. Its design can virtually eliminate planned outages by using multipathing technology and supporting nondisruptive hardware and software upgrades.
Building on the advantages of the IBM Virtualization Family′s technologies, the SAN Integration Server is designed to provide storage pooling, advanced copy functions, and data migration. It is designed to be a fault-tolerant and flexible storage solution that is cost effective at typical storage capacity points. It is also designed to provide investment protection with the ability to scale to over 83 useable
terabytes.

Description
Highlights
The IBM TotalStorage SAN Integration Server is designed to reduce both the complexity and costs of managing your storage and to provide the benefits of SAN, virtualization, and pooled storage technology in a prepackaged, comprehensive solution.
The SAN Integration Server is designed to help you:
• Simplify management and increase administrator productivity by consolidating storage management intelligence into a single view.
• Address disaster recovery and business continuance needs by applying and managing copy services across a very large pool of storage capacity (over 83 useable terabytes).
• Dynamically migrate data, enabling administrators to move storage from one device to another, and perform load balancing, without taking storage off-line and without losing data availability. This capability can help reduce or eliminate the planned downtime required to migrate data from obsolete or end-of-lease storage devices onto newer devices.
• Enhance or improve disaster recovery and business continuance operations with the optional Advanced Copy Services of the SAN Integration Server. These optional copy functions include FlashCopy and Synchronous Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy. Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy is available for selected environments at initial general availability; support for additional environments is planned for year end 2003. In addition, these Advanced Copy Services are architected to help maintain data availability during failover, failback, local area network (LAN)-free, and server-free backup operations. If an engine goes off-line, the surviving engine is capable of emptying write cache and proceeding in write-through mode.
• Configure the SAN Integration Server with ease
through its integrated master console. This
centralized management point is designed to provide a unified view of storage volume management. In addition, its autonomic design can automatically discover hardware of newly installed storage capacity,
engines, and can bring them into view immediately so appropriate administrator actions can be taken. The SAN Integration Server can be integrated and preconfigured from a flexible menu of options to address your unique requirements. Its architecture and design points are intended to provide:
• The benefits of SAN technology and Storage in one solution
• Centralized management control for the complete SAN infrastructure through the systems master console
• Improvements in storage utilization
• High data availability by using multipathing software enabling nondisruptive data migration, backup/restore, point-in-time copying, remote mirroring, and hardware and software upgrading
• An on demand storage environment to help companies become on demand businesses with the flexibility and speed to address customer demands, market opportunities, or competitive threats
Product Details
The SAN Integration Server utilizes 2Gb/sec Fibre Channel technology and the TotalStorage SAN Volume Controller to provide a storage solution that offers high performance and scalable storage capacity with high-availability, dual-fabric configurations. The solution allows you to select the system characteristics, host attachments, storage capacity, and performance to suit your current needs in a manner that is simple, flexible, and robust.
The SAN Integration Server consists of the SAN Fabric components, SAN Volume Controller, and FAStT600 storage components. A master console for system management and an Ethernet Switch for out of band status reporting provide a complete storage solution. The base rack contains the SAN Fabric and SAN Volume Controller and a single FAStT600 with up to three FAStT EXP700 enclosures to provide a maximum capacity of 6.4 TB. Additional storage is accommodated in the 19-inch expansion rack feature, each of which contains up to three FAStT600 storage servers and nine FAStT EXP700 expansion enclosures and attaches to the base model with pairs of Fibre Channel cables. Each expansion rack feature can provide up to an additional 19.3 TB with 146 GB drives. The base model can support up to four 2146 storage expansion racks, providing a total capacity up to 83.5 TB.
A key part of the SAN Integration Server is the IBM manufacturing processes which have been developed to maximize the integrity of the system, handling the complexity of the implementation but still providing opportunity for different SAN configurations. All internal cabling for Fibre Channel components, Ethernet connections, and power supplies is laid out in an optimized fashion for maintenance to help minimize disruption during servicing, and to provide for easy upgrades. Configuration variables and settings have been designed to simplify the task of system administration.
The configurations offered are based on combinations of the three IBM SAN switches: 3534-F08, 2109-F16, and 2109-F32. All three are required to be used in pairs. Each of these switches is factory zoned for the particular requirements of the SAN Volume Controller and the storage and host attachments. The SAN configuration for Remote Copy is not included in the base SAN Integration Server due to the unique nature of customer′s environment. A sample of the SAN configuration changes required (zoning, and so on) can be found in the SVC
Redbook and on the 2145 support Web site. The
dual-fabric configuration is designed to allow a single switch to fail with minimum I/O disruption; I/O can continue via the second switch. These switches are offered as dual fabric to cover a wide number of host port connection scenarios.
The FAStT600 storage chosen is optimized for use in the
SAN Integration Server. When used in the SAN
Integration Server, the FAStT600 can support up to three FAStT EXP700 and a total of 56 disks factory configured with RAID 5 for the optimum storage/performance characteristics. Appropriate FAStT EXP700 attachment authorizations are automatically included in the FAStT600 order depending on the number of FAStT EXP700 ordered. Although the FAStT600 does have a small nonvolatile write cache, the overall SAN Integration Server performance is defined by the large cache in the SAN Volume Controller. No copy services are provided with the FAStT600 and native copy service function would not be usable in the SAN Integration Server.
The FAStT600 and FAStT EXP700 in the SAN Integration Server support three disk drive types:
• 36.4 GB 15K rpm — used for highest performance operations
• 72.8 GB 10K rpm — offered as an optimized cost performance choice
• 146 GB 10K rpm — offering lowest capacity cost All FAStT600 and FAStT EXP700 used in the SAN Integration Server are fully populated with 14 disks. Only disks of the same type can be used in a single enclosure. Each FAStT600 and FAStT EXP700 has the same RAID 5 configuration when offered in the SAN Integration Server as configured from manufacturing in factory initial orders. FAStT600 contains:
6 disks in RAID 5, 5 data + 1 parity 7 disks in RAID 5, 6 data + 1 parity 1 hot spare
1st FAStT EXP700 contains:
6 disks in RAID 5, 5 data + 1 parity 7 disks in RAID 5, 6 data + 1 parity 1 hot spare
2nd FAStT EXP700 contains:
6 disks in RAID 5, 5 data + 1 parity 7 disks in RAID 5, 6 data + 1 parity 1 hot spare
3rd FAStT EXP700 contains:
6 disks in RAID 5, 5 data + 1 parity 7 disks in RAID 5, 6 data + 1 parity 1 hot spare
The SAN Volume Controllers provide the SAN Integration Server with a large protected write cache. They are required to be used in pairs. Configurations available in the SAN Integration Server are limited to a maximum of two pairs, which can support a maximum of 42 hosts and
13 RAID controllers. At general availability, the maximum number of hosts supported is 26.
Copy services are provided by SAN Volume Controller storage software, and FlashCopy can be performed for all storage under SAN Volume Controller management. Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy is available for host
applications in the AIX and Windows 2000
environment.
In the SAN Integration Server, both the managed disks (FAStT600 arrays) and managed disk groups are assigned in manufacturing as part of the configuration service. Customers may use the SAN Volume Controller for data migration from other supported RAID controllers to internal storage on the SAN Integration Server.
The SAN Integration Server is provided with a master console that contains the facilities and tools to install, configure, monitor, and control the complete solution. All reporting and alert management is out of band via the internal 24-port Ethernet switch and network within the SAN Integration Server.
The master console is a Windows 2000-based xSeries processor with flat monitor console and space saver keyboard. All software is preloaded and user screens are set up. The preloaded software provides the following functions:
