Having a complete working backup of vital company information forms a major part of business continuity. For a backup strategy to be fully effective, it needs to be secure, easy to use and manage, cost-effective and offer a simple, efficient and timely method of restoring lost or corrupted data.

TouchPoint

from Smartways offers exactly that – with the added benefit that backups are sent off site to

Smartways secure dedicated data centre, centrally located in Northampton.

stolen, or even being affected by a disaster such as a flood or fire, Smartways will provide an engineer to transfer the data held on our backup servers to a replacement TPLS. This will then be transported to site and installed, within hours of the data transfer being completed.*

Because laptops are often left out of backup schedules, an important feature of the TouchPoint product is the TP-Client Lite application. This is client software that is installed onto each laptop, with

backups performed whenever the laptop is connected to the internet. Incremental backups are sent directly to the TouchPointBackup Servers held at Smartways. *Please refer to Price List for the details

How does

TouchPointis an agentless method of backup – this

means that you can backup as many PCs, servers, and applications as you wish, just by installing the TP-Client onto one master machine – there is no need to add client software on to any other device held permanently on the network. The whole backup schedule is set up and managed at one central point, meaning that administration and management of backups is reduced to a minimum.

Having created backup schedules, and designated which files, folders, applications and servers are to be backed up, the system is ready to go.

The backups are initially created on a designated server – the TPLS (TouchPointLocal Server) – which is held locally on the network. The TPLS holds an initial full backup of the system, following which only changes are backed up. This reduces the volume of storage that is required, and the bandwidth needed to send backup packets off site.

For added data security, the TPLS is itself backed up to servers held at Smartways secure data centre in Northampton. The TPLS sends packets containing incremental backups over the internet to Smartways. These backup packets are compressed and then encrypted by the TPLS using 256-bit AES

encryption. A standard broadband connection can be used. For data volumes that exceed 3-5GB per day, we would recommend a larger capacity dedicated line to be used.

Restoration of files, PCs, applications and even full servers could not be easier using TouchPoint. Restoration of data can be done locally, using the TPLS. This operates at LAN speed and is easy to do, especially when compared to the hassle of restoring from other backup methods, such as tape. In the unfortunate circumstance of the TPLS failing, being

TouchPointallows users to backup all their data, whether it is held on PC, laptop or server, and even on multiple remote networks.

Data is collected by the TPLS – TouchPoint Local Server – with its easy onsite backup and restore facilities. This data is then formatted by the TPLS to create a backup packet that only contains the changes made since the last backup, before being compressed, encrypted and sent over the internet to fully redundant storage arrays held at Smartways secure data centre. Whilst being sent over the internet and stored at Smartways, TouchPointuses

256 bit AES encryption, to ensure complete security at all times. You don’t even have to manually run backups – once your backup sets and schedules have been setup,

the whole process is automatic. More importantly, because all backups are stored locally on the TPLS, lost data can be restored at LAN speed, an unlimited number of times, negating the need to re-import data that is held at Smartways,

giving you the best data insurance available anywhere.

Benefits

The IT team do not have to install client software on to each separate machine to be backed up

Backups can be run as frequently or infrequently as required, depending on the amount of usage.

There is no need to trawl through old backup tapes or discs, just select the data to be restored and send it to the final location.

Because the backed up data is held on a server, there is no need to swap disks or tapes part way through a backup.

There is no need to have to buy new tapes or disks on a regular basis because they have come to the end of their life – there are no tapes or disks.

The billing for TouchPointis worked out dependent on the volume of storage space in use, not the number of users, so is as scalable as you want it to be – from 50 users to 50,000.

For ease of management, there is one central point where all backups are managed called the TP User. All decisions have to be made in one place, rather than each user deciding when and what they want to backup, it is all decided by one person.
