The Donor Network West’s mission is to save and improve lives through organ and tissue donation for transplantation.
We concentrate our efforts on the recovery of vital organs such as lungs, heart, liver, kidneys, heart-lung and pancreas from deceased donors and placement of these organs with the over 100,000 people who are currently waiting for a life-saving organ transplant in our country. The Transplant Network also recovers corneas and a variety of tissues. The Transplant Network also offers on-going support and resources for both organ and tissue donor families.

The Sr. Database Engineer role is a combination of data warehouse developer and Business Intelligence (BI)
developer. This individual is responsible for enhancing and maintaining a centralized data warehouse, as
well as building and maintaining multi-dimensional cubes for decision support. Along with the data
warehouse and data cube responsibilities, the Sr. Database Engineer is also responsible for developing
reports that utilizes the data warehouse and/or multi-dimensional cubes . To accomplish these
responsibilities, this individual must be able to deploy and maintaining data support tools, metadata
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: General Responsibilities
1. Keep up to date with OPO industry direction, guidance and requirements. AOPO, UNOS, CMS, FDA, AATB, EBAA and HIPAA.
2. Devise, develop, and deploy required data queries in response to business user needs.
3. Act as an advocate for BI benefits across the organization; promote BI usage to relevant departments. 4. Keep up to date on developments and trends in the BI and data warehousing industry.
5. Attend training seminars, conferences, and trade shows to broaden knowledge of current and future Business Intelligence issues and technologies.
6. Will participate in audit events as needed. Strategy & Planning
1. Create data mining architectures, coding standards, statistical reporting, and data analysis methodologies. 2. In conjunction with data owners and department managers, develop data models and protocols for mining
production databases.
3. Assist in the development of data management policies and procedures to ensure the integrity and availability of databases and their accompanying software.
4. Assess and cultivate long-term strategic goals for BI development in conjunction with project managers, department managers, staff and other stakeholders.
5. Keep up to date on developments and trends in the BI and data warehousing industry and make strategic recommendations to management.
Acquisition & Deployment
1. Conduct research and make recommendations on data mining products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.
2. Support the evaluation and selection of database/data warehouse components, including hardware, relational database management systems, ETL software, metadata management tools, and database design solutions.
Operational Management
1) Collaborate with project managers, department managers, end users, IT staff, and other
stakeholders to integrate data mining applications with existing systems and ensure a tight fit
between the BI environment and business requirements.
2) Work with project managers to design end user reporting.
3) Enhance and maintain the corporate data warehouse.
4) Develop and maintain SSRS reports, dashboards and functions to meet business needs.
5) Develop and maintain KPI business dashboards, graphs and portal interfaces.
7) Design and implement ETL systems for merging DONOR NETWORK WEST donor management
and BI applications using MS-SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
8) Produce ETL design guidelines to ensure a manageable ETL infrastructure for the BI system.
9) Perform database transaction and security audits.
10) Implement user requirements for reports, forms, queries, and data extraction.
11) Communicate schedule, updates and issues to BI requestors.
12) Support the quality assurance/quality control process for DONOR NETWORK WEST data.
13) Design, code, test, and document all new or modified data mining systems, applications, and
programs.
14) Develop the semantic layer, metadata, reports, and report definitions.
15) Develop, implement, and maintain change control and testing processes for modifications to
databases.
16) Develop and deliver standardized DONOR NETWORK WEST reports to regulatory agencies on a
consistent basis.
17) Assist in the design of databases and data warehouses to ensure interoperability with BI
solutions
18) Provide and apply quality assurance best practices for data mining/analysis services across the
organization.
19) Create data definitions for new database file/table development and/or changes to existing
ones.
20) Determine required network components to ensure data access, as well as data consistency and
integrity.
21) Develop and deploy end-user best practices and tools for data extraction, queries, and data
manipulation in accordance with business processes.
22) Creating and delivering end-user training and documentation and providing second-line support
to power users who develop reports for their departments
23) Work with project management and development staff to coordinate the creation and
management of data queries.
24) Build, test and deploy reports
25) Work with project managers to ensure that data entry, retrieval, change, and delete functions
meet business requirements for project completion.
26) Ensure effective protection and integrity of data assets.
27) Design, install, monitor, maintain, and performance-tune production databases where required.
28) Monitor data mining system details within the database, including stored procedures and
execution time, and implement efficiency improvements.
29) Respond to and resolve database access and performance issues.
30) Assist in monthly data upload process to UNOS as needed.
31) Perform data quality checks and corrections to National DSA Dashboard from UNET as needed.
32) Perform data quality checks and uploads for AOPO monthly data reports as needed.
34) Attend training seminars, conferences, and trade shows to broaden knowledge of current and
future portal and business intelligence issues and technologies.
35) Manage and/or provide guidance to junior members of the team.
36) May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

Strong understanding of data mining models, structures, theories, principles, and practices.
Excellent knowledge with database design applications with focus on Microsoft Visual Studio.
Strong knowledge of data modeling tools
Experience with tier-one applications, databases, BI tools and data warehouses, such as Microsoft SQL Server 2008, SSAS, SSIS, SSRS, SharePoint, and others.
Strong familiarity with data preparation, processing, classification, and forecasting.
Direct experience with data management techniques.
Strong knowledge of SQL, TSQL, ASP.NET and .NET language.
Demonstrated ability with Microsoft ETL tools.
Broad knowledge of reporting and query tools and practices.
Experience with computer graphic and multimedia design.
Experience with data processing flowcharting techniques.
Ability to design, code and document data delivery specifications.
Hands-on database tuning and troubleshooting experience.
Ability to translate business needs into data analysis and reporting solutions.
Project management experience.
Strong understanding of the organization’s goals and objectives.
Education:
The minimum qualifications for this position are A college diploma or university degree in the field of computer science.
7 – 9 years of equivalent work experience may be substituted for education requirement. Experience:
5 years of direct work experience.
Healthcare experience and statistical reporting background highly desirable. Certification/License:
Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCPD) or Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA), or Microsoft Certified Information Technology Professional with BI focus (MCITP) desired.

The Sr. Database Engineer may be required to travel both in and out of state by personal auto, rental car, or air in order to meet the duties and responsibilities of the position. The Sr. Database Engineer is expected to drive his/her auto for job related ground transportation. Company reimbursement for personal auto use while on the job is consistent with IRS guidelines.
