Leader in data center and cloud computing services

an interview with CEO of Beyond.pl

The Team

Q: Should companies build their own hardware infrastructure, or simply use data center services?

MG: Having an infrastructure means not only dozens of problems for the heads of the IT depts., but it’s also a business challenge for the boards. Using an external service is a remedy for IT and financial chal-lenges.

There are very few cases where building your own solution is profit-able. In fact, these refer only to those companies that have immense needs in terms of scale, exceeding 1,000 sq. m., no growth perspec-tives, and clear uncommon requirements regarding hardware. In all of the remaining cases, business calculations prove tenancy to be more cost-effective and better grounded. Especially if we value the time, cost optimization, CAPEX-OPEX exchange, if we have an expensive capital (high WACC) and changeable needs.

Q: What are the reasons behind building a Beyond.pl Data Center 2?

We rely on previous experiences and listen to our clients’ needs. Their growing businesses need new space to develop. The market of data center services in Poland is growing rapidly. It is estimated that during the next few years the market in Poland should grow in 17-19% a year up to the value of 450,000,000 EUR in 2016.

Q: Is Poland appealing for foreign customers?

MG: Polish market attracts not only foreign clients, but also more and more investors. Former ones are looking for locations for their

IT equipment or an alternative data center for disaster recovery cent-ers. The investors are attracted by revenues that grow dynamically, as well as many innovations on our market. The market report by Kapsch shows that Poland has the highest cloud computing service adaptation rate in all of Central Europe. According to the report cre-ated by PMR, the value of the cloud computing market in Poland was over 75,000,000 EUR last year, an increase by 30% YOY. Along with the growth of e-commerce market and the data center market dynam-ics, it makes Poland a leader in ICT services in Central Europe.

Q: What is the motivation for foreign clients?

MG: Security, reliability and cost optimization. The main advantage is low maintenance costs of IT infrastructure – power and cooling. Beyond.pl Data Center 2 is one of the most energy efficient facilities on the market. Choosing our data centers is also connected with world famous competence levels of Polish engineers, and high standard of services. This is true in case of clients from both Eastern and Western Europe. Hence, the obvious decision to create yet another data cent-er for our company. The location was also obvious – Beyond.pl Data Center 2 is 2.5 h from both Warsaw and Berlin.

Q: Your activities are connected with huge power demand - today, data centers in the U.S. consume 5% of electric power in this country. Are you going to build autonomous power plants for your data centers anytime soon?

MG: We’ve prepared three electricity ducts for Beyond.pl Data Center 2, one of which has its own planned source of power. There are various possibilities. Some companies use fuel cells or gas power stations. Data centers’ own sources of power is a natural trend, and I believe that using them is one of the natural consequences of devel-opment of data centers. If – for example – we can guarantee a fixed power price for five years, it is a great competitive advantage.

Q: You mentioned security - could you elaborate on this one?

MG: Our industry is regulated by very strict safety norms, like ISO 27001 or PMI DSS, just to mention a few. The building is located in an industrial area. Licensed security guards, technical teams and maintenance teams are on site 24/7. We have no neighbors closer than few hundred meters. We’re far away from any river, close to the urban-ized area, yet outside of the city, close to the freeway – ca. 5 km – and the airport, but not too close. There are no immediate threats around, like a gas station, highways or an air corridor for planes.

Q: What is the availability of Beyond.pl–s Data Center 2?

MG: 99.995%.

Q: So Beyond.pl Data Center 2 meets the TIA-942 requirements for TIER IV?

MG: First of all, our clients are the ones who make decisions about the standard, not the providers or the designers. Our data center is prepared for multi-TIER operation – from TIER I to TIER IV. We dis-tinguish ourselves by offering great flexibility. We’re tenacious in one thing, though – because of the fact that we care about the finances of our clients, and for environmental reasons as well. Beyond.pl Data Center 2 has energy efficiency of PUE < 1.5.

The Team

Complex IT Services for Business ––

- an interview with Beyond.pl

’s representatives

Q: Choosing the right data center is a serious decision. What should one look for while making it?

MB: Evaluate the location in terms of how easy it is to reach the data center, if you need it, and how resistant it is against natural threats. Check how flexible the data center is – companies that provide only out-of-the-box solutions may not satisfy your individual needs. Verify the reliability: expect accessibility of over 99.99%, an on-site team, and constant facility monitoring. Talk about the development efficiency: how fast this provider can implement your services. And – what’s equally important – verify the business stability of your potential partner. If the company’s still growing, it means that it can run its services right and the clients trust it.

Q: Most data centers, especially those in Western Europe, do not provide advanced services and choose to stay with maintaining an infrastructure for IT equipment.

MB: Beyond.pl is more than just colocation, dedicated servers, and cloud computing. We administer grid systems, provide streaming services, design, configure, and build WAN, LAN, SAN, and VPN networks that support both IPv4 and IPv6. We also administer operating systems for all Linux, Windows and Solaris distributions. In order to help our clients, we administer virtualization systems, databases, and backup systems. And if the client wishes so, we can also administer application software. That’s why we gain recognition among foreign clients, who look for the largest service portfolio.

Q: What about clients that would like to change the provider? Individual clients rarely have any experiences with that.

JM: We understand the customer’s concern, but at the same time after performing lots of customers migration to our environment, we know that this process, if properly designed, is succesful and can benefit with many profits. And companies should make choice on the basis of technological and business benefits.

Q: How such a project looks like?

JM: The first stage is environment audit. Just like in disaster recovery plans, this means resource qualification. We get a portfolio with in-formation on the resources and their relations and correlation with business functionalities. They can be divided into “migration groups”, with each of the groups supporting one of the key business and/or IT components. On such a basis we rank the resources, which allows us to prepare a relocation method adjusted to a particular company. Next, we prepare a task plan, a timeline, a budget and resources necessary to realize the project.

Q: Is migration to Beyond.pl connected with technological issues?

JM: No. Our data center uses Tier 1 carriers, we’re directly connect-ed to the Internet backbone and we have access to Internet exchange points. The migration doesn’t mean any limitations regarding data synchronization. And thanks to great communication and logistic in-frastructures reaching the data center for clients is not a problem.

Q: Will you come to pick up the equipment?

JM: I personally participate in various projects. My cell phone number is available for our clients 24/7. We’re here to solve problems. Clients call and say they need more hardware, they have a new app, or experi-ence problems with database integration. We take over and find the solution.

Q: What can you tell about cultural differences among foreign clients?

JM: We work for international clients, and our standard is to adjust to clearly specified expectations and to work in accordance with proce-dures defined by our clients. Our employees are well experienced and trained in terms of communication with clients all over the globe. And the distinguishing factor is that we are at one’s disposal.

Director of Sales Department, Beyond.pl

Choose Poland and save IT

budget on bills

The Case:

Companies as large as Dow Chemical, with a plant that consumes one percent of the entire country’s electricity, and as small as rural, family-owned businesses, invest in their own power-generation infrastructure. The driving factor is the 22 percent government-mandated levy to fund renewable-energy sources, which has resulted in high electricity prices.

The Issue:

There are currently four important economic policy instruments being implemented within the German climate policy framework that influence energy prices for industrial companies, both directly and indirectly.

• The Enviromental Tax Reform introduced taxes on energy and electricity (consumption with direct influnce on energy price);

• The Combined Heat and Power Act (a levy with indirect influence on energy price);

• The EU Emission Trading Scheme (direct influence on ETS installations and indirect influence when electricity providers pass on the cost to electricity consumers);

• The Renewable Energy Act (a levy with indirect influence on energy price)

Increasing instability of Germany’s power grid, along with hiden and direct cost, drives German companies to look for competitive alternatives in a close locations.

The Solution:

• Data center migrations to Beyond.pl facilities in Poznan – only hours’ drive from Berlin – with remote hands services and other management services.

• Utilizing Beyond.pl data centers as a part of a business continuity plan, and choosing the service disaster recovery option at Beyond.pl

• Create the company’s own infrastructure in Beyond.pl data centers thanks to private data center opportunity.

The Benefits

• Opportunity to cut electricity

bills by around 50%

• Quality improvement thanks

to IT outsourcing

• Increased safety of IT

equipment thanks to its

geographical dispersion

• Focus on core business and

support of innovation

• Access to external
