Established in 2009, the Victorian Platform Technologies Network (VPTN) plays a key role in connecting publicly-funded facilities in Victoria with industry and researchers. Through its online services - ARIN and PlatformConnect - VPTN is unique in offering a centralised, open and cross-institutional network of over 140 platform technologies across more than 30 institutions. VPTN is realising its vision by linking innovation with technology and expertise in biological, materials, engineering, physical, chemical, food, sports, nano and mathematical sciences. The VPTN is an initiative supported by the Victorian Government, Biomedical Research Victoria and Monash University. Discover more at platformtechnologies.org

ARIN: BETTER ACCESS FOR BETTER

INNOVATION

As a member organisation for an

extensive network of core facilities,

the VPTN connects facility resources

with researchers in academia and

innovators in the business sector

via its powerful online platforms.

This connection is enabled through ARIN, the VPTN’s customised and secure cloud-based software-as-a-service (SaaS), which empowers Facility Managers to manage access, pricing, bookings, billing and reporting of their instruments, services and products.

From large MRI scanners and genomics to biomechanics, nanofabrication and flow cytometry, ARIN’s single sign-in allows product innovators and researchers to quickly search and access a centralised network of facilities to realise their projects. The network comprises of leading-edge facilities at The University of Melbourne, Monash University, The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health, CSIRO, and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, to name a few.

All ARIN licenses for VPTN members are currently subsidised by the Victorian Government. In becoming a VPTN member, facilities can integrate ARIN to streamline their core facility management. For Facility Managers and Institutional Administrators,

ARIN simplifies the scheduling, invoicing and reporting of each facility without the technical overheads or start-up costs.

Hosted by enterprise-level server architecture, ARIN’s real-time reports and dashboards keep Facility Managers up-to-date to effectively manage their instruments and usage.

Through ARIN, each facility’s ROI is delivered via process efficiency, avoiding costly audits and in making strategic investment decisions based on real-time usage data.

“The ARIN team have been a pleasure to work with and have gone above and beyond in the level of customer service and support they provide in helping us set up the system for our facility.”

Dr Ben Muir RAMP Centre Manager, CSIRO

ARIN’s single sign-in gives Chief Investigators, Product Innovators and Researchers the ability to seamlessly switch between facilities and access and book all infrastructure across the network.

“Using ARIN has made it so much easier for my company to access the infrastructure at facilities, such as Flowcore, that we require for our business.”

ARIN DELIVERS TRUE PLATFORM INTEGRATION BENEFITS FOR CryoEM

A NEED TO IMPROVE EFFICIENCIES

While the existing CryoEM’s facility management system worked, with 100% facility expertise consistently booked and more instruments coming online, it made sense to integrate into Monash’s platform infrastructure to improve efficiencies. A key part of this was adopting ARIN, as one management tool for all users.

“Testing on the back-end server was great and the VPTN team were always available to support us in rolling out ARIN.”

Adam Costin Research Assistant

REAL-TIME, REAL-WORLD RESULTS

With results realised from pharmaceutical organisations and individual researchers to hospitals such as Monash Health, ARIN’s efficiencies for CryoEM include:

› an ability to intuitively manage booking of shared resources and instruments that are linked

› displaying the hierarchy of each instrument in a logical way compatible with CryoEM’s workflow

› matching user skill level with microscope usage by restricting unassisted and assisted booking rights › improving planning and capacity forecasting with the

overview function

› assisting with future funding of new instruments and staff positions with real-time reporting.

“[ARIN’s] real-time reporting is an important feature for us in particular for future funding of new instruments as well as justifying salaries and maintenance costs.”
