Information Systems:

Defining and Establishing

a High Impact Discipline

21st Australasian Conference on Information Systems

1 – 3 December 2010 Brisbane

(3)

Welcome Message from the Conference Co-Chairs

Welcome to the 21st Australasian Conference on Information Systems (ACIS 2010), which is held this year in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. ACIS is the premier conference forum in Australasia for Information Systems academics and professionals covering technical, organisational, business and social issues in the

application of Information Technology. The theme of ACIS 2010 is Information Systems: Defining and Establishing a High Impact Discipline. Accordingly, we hope to focus on matters that define and establish Information Systems as a discipline of high impact for the academic community as well as IS professionals.

The conference will be held at the Queensland University of Technology, Gardens Point Campus, 1-3 December 2010. It is jointly organised by the Information Systems Discipline, Faculty of Science and Technology,

Queensland University of Technology, and the BIS cluster, UQ Business School, Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, The University of Queensland. Our two IS groups have collaborated over the last ten years to achieve success by way of several joint high-quality journal papers, conference papers, and ARC grant applications. It is not surprising then that we have extended this successful collaboration into the arena of organising and hosting the premiere IS academic and networking event for Australasia in 2010 – the ACIS 2010 in Brisbane. We have tried to provide you with a comprehensive, quality program. A record number of submissions were received. The final program comprises a “backbone” of 35 technical sessions running across 5-6 parallel streams over the three main days of the conference. Spread throughout the three days of the technical program will be three high-quality keynote speeches from Robert D (Bob) Galliers, Bentley University, Dean Kingsley, National Lead Partner, Deloitte Australia, and Brian Prentice, Research Vice President, Gartner. We are excited to have this unique mix of academic and industry experts to be willing to make presentations at ACIS 2010. Co-located events include the QualIT conference and the ACIS 2010 Doctoral Consortium. The doctoral consortium will be held at the University of Queensland. We would like to

thank Guy Gable and Iris Vessey for their organisation of this event. Competition for places at the consortium was strong with 18 students being accepted from 33 applications. With internationally renowned keynotes such as Gordon Davis (via video conference) and Ron Weber, and faculty members such as Shirley Gregor, Felix Tan, Graeme Shanks, Deborah Bunker and Sid Huff, we are sure the students will receive a high-quality experience that will benefit their work immeasurably.

In addition to the academic program, ACIS 2010 will provide participants with ample opportunities to meet and interact during coffee breaks, lunches, and two major social events – the conference opening reception at the Old Government House (Tuesday evening) and the conference dinner at Hillstone, St Lucia (Thursday evening). An ambient environment at both events will ensure that delegates can network and exchange experiences with colleagues – an aspect that is crucial to the success of any conference.

There are many people that we must thank and without whose tireless work and contribution this event would not have proceeded. First, we must thank our major sponsors – UQ Business School, QUT, Deloitte Australia, Gartner, SAP, ACPHIS, ARC EII, CEED, and im-c. Without their valuable contributions we would not have been able to provide such an experience for delegates. Second, we would like to thank the members of our organising committee for all of their volunteer efforts, and, in particular, we would like to acknowledge the tireless work of our local arrangements chairs, Marta Indulska and Wasana Bandara. Finally, we thank our conference organisers, ConferenceIT, which brought its considerable conference management experience to bear to help us through this journey.

Attending the ACIS 2010 Conference in Brisbane provides participants with an opportunity to explore a city (and its surrounds) that has attained a world-wide reputation for its scenic environment, quality of life, hospitable climate, and ethnic diversity. All these aspects can be experienced by just walking out of your hotel!

We wish you a stimulating time at ACIS 2010 and a very enjoyable stay in Brisbane.

Welcome Message from the Program Chairs

Dear ACIS2010 participant,

On behalf of the two hosting universities, Queensland University of Technology and

The University of Queensland, we would like to welcome you to the 21

st

Australasian

Conference on Information Systems – ACIS 2010. The topic of this year’s conference is:

“Information Systems

Defining and Establishing a High Impact Discipline”

This theme emphasizes the need to nurture an outward focus of our community in

order to ensure that our research outcomes lead to appropriate impact. Only a research

discipline that acknowledges the need to aim towards impact, and to act and provide

incentives accordingly, will leave a legacy that goes far beyond its own internal gatherings.

Such a desire for impact by no means justifies compromises in the quality of its scientific

processes. It is with this paradigm of rigor and relevance that we designed the ACIS 2010

program.

It has been very pleasing to note that ACIS 2010, and its theme, attracted an entirely new

level of interest from the national and international IS community. With 289 submissions,

we attracted the highest number of submissions that an ACIS conference has ever

received. More than 25 percent of these submissions came from authors based outside

Australia and New Zealand demonstrating the strong international branding of the ACIS

conference.

Committed to a rigorous review process, associate editors were assigned to every

paper. For most papers we were able to secure three, in some cases even more, blinded

reviews. The high number of submissions allowed us to ensure an acceptance rate of

36.3 percent, the lowest in the history of the ACIS conference series! The 105 accepted

papers have been distributed over a 2.5 days program in 35 sessions.

A conference of such standards is the result of an enormous consolidated workload that

is spread over a large number of individuals. We are grateful to the authors of all papers

submitted to ACIS 2010 as it is only through the competitive process within a high number

of submissions that we were able to secure the highest quality of accepted papers. In

particular, we appreciate the contributions of all reviewers. Organising nearly 900 reviews

within a rather small Australasian IS community has been a true, but very rewarding,

challenge. The associate editors played a critical role in moderating the reviews. However,

the core of the program design rested on the shoulders of all the track chairs. In total,

ACIS 2010 hosts 13 tracks that we selected after an open call.

This scientific program is complemented by three carefully selected keynote speakers

including Prof. Bob Galliers, Bentley University, Dean Kingsley, Deloitte, and Brian

Prentice, Gartner. Two affiliated one day workshops, five panel discussions and one

tutorial are further components of the ACIS 2010 agenda.

During the conference, we will acknowledge the best associate editor, the best reviewer

and of course a number of best papers in various categories. We would like to reiterate

that it is the collective effort of our colleagues that lead to the ACIS 2010 program. It has

been a pleasure and honor to orchestrate these efforts.
