The Pyramid Approach
to Education emphasizes
how to teach, rather than
simply what to teach.
PECS is a language training package that is used to teach communication skills rapidly to those with limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication within a social context, without lengthy prerequisite training or expensive materials. Training in PECS begins by teaching spontaneous requesting, and goes on to teach additional communicative functions such as responding to questions and commenting. Based on
a study conducted at the Delaware Autism Program, 76% of
children using PECS acquired speech as either their primary means of communication or as augmented by a picture based system. PECS is also used successfully by many students who have developed speech, but who are not using it functionally.
According to pediatric guidelines regarding autism interventions
published in PEDIATRICS: The Official Journal of the American
Academy of Pediatrics, individuals with autism “who have limited verbal language, or those who do not respond to multiple interventions aimed at improving communication, should be offered the opportunity to use PECS.” Further, a Technical Expert Panel consisting of practitioners, researchers
and parents concluded that PECS is one of only a handful of
interventions that have shown efficacy in the treatment of autism (Maglione, Gans, Das, Timbie, Kasari and HRSA Autism Intervention Research, 2012).

Level 1 Training
Your first step in learning to implement PECS!The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is used to rapidly teach communication skills to those with limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication within a social context, without lengthy prerequisite training. An added benefit for preschool children with autism and related disabilities is the high proportion who acquire independent speech. Participants will learn how to implement the six phases of PECS, plus attributes, through presenter demonstrations, video examples and role-play opportunities. Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of how to implement PECS with individuals with autism, related developmental disabilities, and/or limited communication skills.

Many people with autism have difficulty acquiring language related to expressing their emotions and also identifying emotions in other people. In this workshop we will evaluate and challenge traditional approaches to teaching learners with autism to communicate about their emotions, as well as respond to such language from other people. This training begins with providing a theoretical approach to the Language of Emotions and ends with a variety of practical suggestions for teaching.
B.F. Skinner provided an important guide to the analysis of language in his book, Verbal Behavior. In this book, he stresses the critical value of focusing on the function of various aspects of communication. His analysis includes a very interesting section on what he termed “private events”. That is, how do we learn to talk about things that happen inside of us? In this workshop, we will review traditional approaches to teaching children with autism to communicate about their emotions as well as respond to such language from other people. Participants will be asked to consider how they currently teach various lessons related to emotions and then plan to incorporate Skinner’s analysis into the design of effective lessons. These lessons may involve very young children or teenagers and adults who continue to have difficulty with this topic. We also will look at a very important part of language that helps communicative partners better understand the perspective of someone who is attempting to communicate. We will review why this area is so difficult for those with autism and suggest teaching strategies that may lead to successful acquisition of these complex language skills.

Individuals with complex communication needs must master certain critical communication skills if they are to function independently in the home, community, school and/or vocational setting. This training discusses how to teach critical expressive communication skills (requesting reinforcers, requesting help, requesting a break, acceptance and rejection) and critical receptive communications skills (waiting, following directions, schedule following and transitions between activities). Critical expressive communication skills are skills individuals need to convey important messages to others. These skills are crucial because if a person cannot calmly and effectively communicate wants and needs, contextually inappropriate behaviors may be demonstrated. Critical receptive communication skills relate to a person’s ability to understand important messages from others. Failure to understand such messages may be distressing and/or dangerous for the individual.
This one day training focuses on why these nine skills are the highest priority for teaching and how we teach them. Strategies covered are relevant for anyone with complex communication needs, regardless
of their communication modality (PECS, speech, sign, SGD). Teaching Critical Communication Skills
is a must for anyone working and/or living with people with complex communication needs.

With the current influx of communication devices and apps to the market, how do we ensure that basic functional communication skills are maintained and taught right from the beginning? Speech Generating Devices (SGDs) were first introduced for people with motor difficulties. The use of these devices have now expanded and are being introduced to learners with autism and other related communication difficulties. For these populations, language and cognition are often compromised and basic social and communication skills have not always been mastered prior to the introduction of a device. Because of this, the way we teach the use of SGDs needs to be specifically tailored to fit the needs of each individual paying attention to devices capabilities vs. user capabilities. This full-day workshop will describe procedures for analyzing a learner’s current PECS skills to determine candidacy for transitioning to a Speech Generating Device (SGD), choosing a device, and teaching functional use of the device, and why we must teach the basic principles of communication to our learner first to ensure positive outcomes are achieved.
*Please bring a Speech Generating Device (SGD) to the training for use during a variety of activities to receive the full experience.

IV+ App Now Available!
Has your learner mastered Phases I through IV of the PECS protocol using a traditional PECS Communication Book? The PECS IV+ App is a great digital alternative designed to use in any setting with learners that are proficient at creating and exchanging picture sentences!*
Pyramid Educational Consultants’ next great app, PECS IV+, allows users who are proficient at creating and exchanging picture sentences to switch between insert pages of a digital PECS Communication Book to construct Sentence Strips. The extended Sentence Strip makes it easy for users to construct long sentences with up to 7 pictures. The app gives users easy access to multiple insert pages which will allow for language and vocabulary growth.
Pyramid offer apps for iPhone®, iPad® and/or Android™ mobile devices. Let Pyramid help you set up successful classrooms, teach picture discrimination and waiting, teach commenting lessons, assist with reinforcement and put easy deal making in your hands!
Join Pyramid’s Joe McCleery, PhD as he reviews some of our apps at www.pecsusa.com/apps.php.
The PECS IV+ App includes:
• 1,000 ready to use Pics for PECS images
(including 21 Sentence Starters)
• Male and female synthesized speech • Ability to re-label images as desired
• Customize the image library by importing your own pictures • A digital Sentence Strip with space for up to 7 pictures
The Sentence Strip™ makes it easy to construct long sentences with up to 7 pictures! *Pyramid Educational Consultants do not recommend
starting functional communication training with an app or a speech generating device as these tech options do NOT require the social interaction that is crucial to communication and is the cornerstone of the Picture Exchange Communication System. When starting functional communication training, it is recommended to start with a low-tech PECS Communication Book.
