The countdown has begun! Whether you are a parent or a student, the end is in sight. High School will soon be over and a new chapter will begin. For many, this new chapter will include continuing their education and career pursuits on the college campus.

Most of you have already begun conversations about what college to attend. Many of you have started planning what campuses to visit and when to visit them. The resource you hold in your hand was created to assist parents and students as they make this life-altering decision.

Most college campuses do a phenomenal job introducing prospective students to campus life, academia, etc., but rarely do they inform students and parents of Christian organizations and local churches. This College Tour Guide contains brief campus information, information on effective campus Christian organizations, and local churches in 20 college settings throughout Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and Oklahoma.

5 Things to Consider When

Deciding On a College

Choosing a college is a life-altering decision! So much more goes into that decision than just liking the school colors or being a life-long fan of the football team. This College Tour Guide will help you with a couple of quick thoughts to get you moving in the right direction. This list could easily get exhaustive and cumbersome. Consider the following five things before you enroll in that first college class.

PRAY!

Spend much time praying together as a family early on. Ask God for wisdom and clarity in your decision. Sometimes the answer is not so clear, but continue to pray with faith and patience. The Psalmist says in Psalm 62:5, “My soul, wait in silence for God only, for my hope is from Him.” Remember to listen to God. Yes, God wants us to make our requests known, but He also wants us to be still so that we might hear from Him. Keep your chin up and your knees down!

DO YOUR HOMEWORK.

As a Christian, it is incredibly important to know why you believe what you believe. As you look at colleges, do not assume you know what they stand for and what they teach. Do your research! Take the time to talk to students who have a Christian worldview that attend that school and ask pointed questions. If possible, talk to department heads and professors about teaching philosophies and content that will be taught. Make sure your beliefs either match up with theirs or can at least stand on their own when challenged by those who believe differently. Be careful not to set yourself up for a major disappointment by not knowing what you are getting into at a particular school.

(7)

ROOM TO BLOOM.

Parents, God fearfully and wonderfully made this soon-to-be college student! They have a unique heart, passion, and giftedness that helps them “stand out” from everyone else. This is important to remember because your dream as a parent, might not be their dream and your school might not be their school. Give your child the opportunity to explore their heart, passion, and giftedness at the school both of you feel great about them attending.

POTENTIAL GROWTH.

Use this College Tour Guide and make intentional visits to find a college campus that will give you the best potential for continued spiritual growth. God is not through with you yet! There is more to college life than just academia and campus life. Parents and students who aren’t intentional about this usually find themselves wondering what went wrong spiritually in college. Explore places to grow, serve, and be involved.

DON’T GET STUCK IN A BOX!

According to the U.S. Census, only 27% of college graduates work a job in their major field of study.1 The words of wisdom here lie in the fact that some colleges offer major degrees in very specialized areas. Be careful in getting too specific in a major field. 80% of students change their major at least once?2 Many students have a “blurry” view of what is expected in a particular field of work and the requirements of a particular education track. Keep this in mind and talk through major fields of study before declaring. Make sure you have a full grasp of what is required for that field of study.

Official campus visits are an invaluable part of the where to go to college decision process. The college campus visit is more than just seeing dorms, talking to the admission counselors, walking around with campus tour guides, and peaking into buildings and classrooms. The official campus visit is a great time for parents and students to explore how a particular campus will continue to foster the spiritual growth of this soon-to-be college student. Families should consider these five things before and during their official campus visit(s):

PLAN AHEAD.

A campus visit is a big deal. Hours upon hours are spent

preparing college admission and scholarship applications. Sadly, the planning of campus visits is often where the ball gets dropped. Make a plan to do more than just what the admissions office schedules for you. This College Tour Guide will help you know what Christian organizations and local churches to connect with. Your intentionality will pay off!

VISIT A CHURCH.

As you are making your campus visit plans, be sure to visit some of the local churches in this College Tour Guide, even if your visit is not on a Sunday. Take steps to meet the college minister, pastor, or other staff members who should be able to give you information about the church and what is happening in their college ministry. Ministers jump at the opportunity to meet new students, and who knows, you may even get a free meal out of it! Likewise, the soon-to-be college student will be a step ahead because they already know a friendly face from the church. Making that personal connection helps them get motivated to make that first visit when school begins.

5 Things to Do Before and

During Your Official Campus

(9)

PRAYER WALK THE CAMPUS.

Making that college choice is a BIG decision. Many parents and students pray about it before they get there, but once you are on that campus it should be a huge priority to continue saturating the visit in prayer. As you walk around the campus, lift up your thoughts, concerns, excitement, and pleas for clarity as you narrow down your choices of schools. As you walk, pray to the Lord and ask, “Is this the right place for me?” Take time to listen! Be careful not to let family tradition or history have a more significant voice in the decision making process than the voice of God! Pray hard!

MEET WITH LEADERS OF CHRISTIAN

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS.

Almost every college campus has some active Christian student organizations. This College Tour Guide provides you with some of the more active Christian organizations on campus and how to contact them. The organization leaders are ready to let you know how you can get involved. In your planning, ask what might be the best time to come by for a visit and see the organization in action. Remember, the student organization should never take the place of your church involvement. Good Christian student organizations will encourage you to be plugged into a local church.

SCHEDULE YOUR VISIT AT AN

OPPORTUNE TIME.

When you make your campus visit, consider going when student life is running full throttle. Be sure there are opportunities to be around and meet Christian students who attend the school you are visiting. Nothing gets students more excited and feeling like they could plug right in than getting the chance to network effectively on their visit. Holidays might be convenient time to go on a visit, but they usually turn out to be a big disappointment because the campus looks like a ghost town. Get around other Christian students and ask them questions about spiritual growth and service opportunities. Sometimes the people you will meet on a visit turn out to be life-long friends!
