Yorkshire Rows - Atlantic 2015

Four women, one boat, one dream and one

world record!

(3)

In 1966 Sir Chay Blyth and John Ridgeway performed their legendary

open-boat row across the Atlantic Ocean in English Rose III. The trip took

92 days and it laid the foundation for the TALISKER Whisky

Atlantic Challenge 2015.

Since 1997 this ocean-rowing race has attracted the brave and the

intrepid to pit themselves against the elements and race the 3,000 miles

from La Gomera, Tenerife, to English Harbour, Antigua.

The challenge begins in early December 2015. More people have been into

space and climbed Mount Everest than have rowed the Atlantic, and it is

rightly considered as one of the toughest challenges on the planet.

Rowers have to cope with blisters, salt rashes, sleep deprivation, 40 foot

waves, tankers, sea life, equipment issues and rowing in two-hour shifts

around the clock for weeks on end.

Boats are seven metres long and just under two metres wide, with only a

small cabin for protection against storms. All boats are equipped at the

race start, and cannot take any outside or external repairs, help or food

and water during the crossing.

The Atlantic Challenge is proudly supported by TALISKER Whisky.

Twenty years from now you will be more

didn’t do than by the ones you did. So

In December 2015, four women who are members of the Guy Fawkes rowing club in

York, will be setting off on a herculean challenge to row the Atlantic. Janette Benaddi,

Helen Butters, Frances Davies and Niki Doeg will take part in the renowned Talisker

Whisky Atlantic Challenge, the world’s toughest rowing race. This daunting feat will

see them row 3,000 nautical miles over 40-90 days in all weathers to raise money for

their chosen charities.

“Doing it for the charities and doing it for the girls” - Janette

“During my Dad’s illness he amazed me with his courage, bravery and fight to the

end. I hope he will be with me in spirit when I am faced with the unpredictable vicious

Atlantic Ocean” - Helen

“This challenge has everything - it’s going to stretch us physically, mentally,

financially and emotionally. Truly life changing!” - Frances

“Every single person is capable of so much more than they realise, with hard work,

dedication and the support of those around them, amazing feats can be achieved”

-Niki

Our Charities

(8)

We aim to gather strong support in the UK and on the

international stage and partner with a network of sponsors and

supporters. We will be delivering a regular newsletter to

companies and individuals worldwide. Our focus will be to build

up a strong media presence, with regular features in

newspapers, on radio and TV.

The 2013 event is attracting significant international publicity,

reaching an estimated 1 billion people globally, with over 700

individual pieces of international news, covering 27 countries

with front cover stories in national and regional newspapers,

on-line and through radio media.

This represents an excellent opportunity to team up with

Yorkshire Rows and to be a part of our exciting journey. Whether

you choose to sponsor with equipment or cash donations, your

support will allow us to focus on our fundraising efforts and

maximise the amount we are able to raise for three excellent

charitable causes.

A partnership with Yorkshire Rows and your

company could help increase brand

awareness in Yorkshire, UK and globally.

We will be travelling extensively around Yorkshire and other areas in the UK and

will be taking part in various events with high attendance figures. These include

venues such as London or Southampton boat shows, The Yorkshire Show, schools

and shops in Yorkshire as well as many more. All key sponsors will be advertised

fully at events. An events schedule is being developed and we are happy to

consider events put forward by key sponsors.

Talisker Whisky has been the main sponsor of the Atlantic Rowing race since 2011

and has considerably raised the profile of the event. The latest race has seen

unprecedented coverage both nationally and internationally, with an estimated

reach of a billion people during the 2011 race (2013 figures out soon).

We are working with Talisker and PopUpPR in order to raise the profile of our

challenge, of the race, and of our Sponsors. See below for example figures from

Partnering Yorkshire Rows allows for a different and unusual way to raise the profile of a company. The boat will be distinctive and visable through-out Yorkshire, the UK and other countries through the promotional and training campaign we are planning. From the coverage we have had so far people are very aware of who we are and what we are doing and we are getting significant interest from everyone in relation to the challenge.

In the first 6 weeks Yorkshire Rows has been featured in the following media: – regular radio updates have been requested from the BBC

. A great picture and introduction to our challenge –again, regular updates have been requested.

– 2 page feature in the Life & Style Magazine (see photo above) – an initial mention on Look North.

– Spreading the word to several hundred supporters!

We offer a fantastic opportunity for product testing, promotional photography, video and testimonials where relevant. We have a growing following on Twitter and Facebook, and your company would feature on our websitewww.yorkshirerows.com.

The most important piece of equipment! We will be using the new R45 class boat from Rannoch Adventures which is approximately 8.6 meters in length and weighing in at 1200kg. An example of a pairs boat and kit required is below – we will have double everything!

This could potentially save our lives. The emergency life raft is con-cealed in a plastic case, but automatically inflates into a two-man raft at the pull of a cord. Each life raft comes with a survival kit inside, in-cluding food and water rations, a compass, a signal mirror and a first aid kit. For obvious reasons, a life raft is mandatory.

EPIRB stands for ‘Emergency

position-indicating radio beacon’. This is our primary means of sending a distress signal, and can be activated manually, or will automatically

acti-vate when under water. An essential piece of equipment to have on board, it contains all essential medical equipment. Every ocean row-er taking part in the event has to at-tend a first aid course and needs to be able to resuscitate someone if needed.

(14)

A critical piece of safety equipment, the lifejackets will keep the wearer buoyant in water. They are also designed to keep the person’s airways clear whether conscious or unconscious. Many modern

lifejackets are designed to automatically inflate when they come into contact with water.

The water maker is a desalination device that converts seawater into drinking water using reserve osmosis (in simpler terms, a high pressure pump that forces seawater through a membrane which allows freshwater but not salt water to pass). A back up hand pump is also required in case the water maker breaks.

VHF (Very High Frequency) radios are the primary method of communication used by all rescue services at sea. For this reason, all ocean rowing boats must have one. VHF radios only work to line of sight, therefore the range from an ocean rowing boat is only around 3 miles.

Rowing for 12 hours a day can burn up to 8,000 calories, and to stay fuelled rowers must consume a significant amount. Our diet will consist of energy and nutrient-dense expedition foods, including rehydrated meals, energy bars and carbohydrate powders. It’s a race requirement to have at least 90 days
