Reflections

Fr. Paul Schmidt

MARTYRS PAY

THE ULTIMATE

price AND ARE

BESTOWN THE

ULTIMATE PRIZE

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Next week we begin Holy Week with the Palm Sunday celebration. Palm leaves are

blessed, so that we can carry them in procession to honor Christ the King and bring them to

our homes to display throughout the year behind crucifixes or holy pictures. On Palm

Sunday, the palms remind us of the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.

That triumphant entry did not lead to a political take-over of Israel, as some had

hoped. The Romans remained in power. Jesus, who entered Jerusalem amid the adulation

of the crowd left the city carrying a cross and mocked by the crowd. On that cross the

Roman rulers executed him as a criminal. The death of Jesus reminds us of another

meaning of palms – martyrdom. Saints who die because of their Christian faith, like St.

Pedro Calungsod, whom we are honoring at the 12:30 Mass this Sunday, are pictured with

palm branches in their hands. Because Jesus conquered death by dying and rising from the

dead, the palm reminds us that the martyr also triumphs over death by dying. We decorate

St. Pedro’s picture with palms at our celebration.

The

Greek

word

marturos

means

witness

. A martyr bears witness to his or her faith

in Jesus by dying. This is the most eloquent testimony a person can give. In our own day

we still have martyrs. Mr. John Allen, a noted Catholic journalist, spoke at our cathedral

recently on this subject. Every year the Vatican publishes a list of people who have died

because they were Catholic. In addition to Catholics, other Christians have also been

martyred in our time.

Jesus was perceived by the Roman authorities to be a threat. The religious authorities

also saw him as a threat. So too, martyrs in every age are treated as threats – threats to the

political and economic powers, threats to religious establishments or rival religious groups,

threats to complacency and corruption.

This should surprise us and not surprise us. Jesus came only to do good. Why would

that upset anyone? His way was one of peace. Why should it cause war? Why would

governments murder even women and children because of their faith? Even Pontius Pilate

recognized that Jesus had done nothing wrong.

Pilate

was

pressured

into executing Jesus for political reasons. Jesus was causing a

disturbance. People were calling him a king. Caesar had no tolerance for a rival king. The

religious leaders felt that Jesus was overturning the traditional religion. He was criticizing

their hypocrisy. He was calling them to a change of heart. He was threatening their power.

Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador, whose day of martyrdom we observed on

March 24, was gunned down while celebrating Mass. The assassin acted in the name of an

oppressive government which was supported by elements in the United States. He had

been championing the cause of the poor in the name of Christ’s laws of justice and love.

This was a threat to the powers of oppression. Even some religious leaders turned their

backs on him. He was not the only martyr in Latin America. Several years ago I went on a

Maryknoll-sponsored pilgrimage with deacons from our diocese and priests from other

parts of the United States, to visit the places in El Salvador and Guatemala where clergy,

religious, and lay people had died for the faith. Because of the victory of Jesus over sin and

death, we believe that these men and women have also won a palm of victory.

As we prepare to celebrate Holy Week, we should reflect on our own call to Christian

witness. We, too, are called to victory over sin and death. We may not have to give our

lives, but we will have to die to ourselves. We may be ridiculed and misunderstood

because of what we believe and what we practice. We may get discouraged. We may be

tempted to “throw in the towel.” May the palms we carry next Sunday inspire us not to

give up. Those palms which signify suffering also signify triumph.

Your

Pastor,

Fifth Week of Lent

Sunday, April 6 Deepening Faith in the Resurrection

Readings: Ezekiel 37:12–14; Psalm 130:1–2, 3–4, 5–6, 7–8 (7); Romans 8:8–11; John 11:1–45. Death can be frightening, but Christians know there is good news: we will be raised up! Like Lazarus, the friend of Jesus, we will all die, but faithful disciples will find new life in the resurrection on the last day. The simple but profound act of participating in the Eucharist and receiving Christ’s Body and Blood assures us of our place at the heavenly banquet.

Today’s liturgy meditates on that new life that the elect and those already initiated will celebrate at Easter. Sickness will not end in death. God’s Word is ripe with his promise. Both Martha and Mary grow and deepen their notion of faith through their conversation with Jesus, which leads them and the Church to believe in the Resurrection of Christ and the glory of God.

Even in the midst of sorrow and suffering, we can learn from death. The Spirit, in which the Father and Son participate, breathes life into dry bones. The words of today’s psalm (130), “For with the LORD there is steadfast love” and “great power to

redeem,” call Christians to hope and trust in the resurrection for all believers. Paul also testifies to us: “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he . . . will give life to your mortal bodies also.”

Pray for departed loved ones today, and for all who are sick and dying. Eat and drink from the banquet of the Lord, and take hope that we will be raised up on the last day!

Monday, April 7 Saint John Baptist de la Salle

John Baptist de la Salle is the patron of schoolteachers and the founder of the Christian Brothers. Today, they staff many educational institutions. The scribes and Pharisees in today’s Gospel address Jesus as “Teacher.” Pray for teachers and their students and for their safety in these times of unrest. Daniel 13:1– 9, 15–17, 19–30, 33–62; Psalm 23:1–3a, 3b–4, 5, 6 (4ab); John 8:1–11.

Tuesday, April 8 Lifted Up

Because the Israelites complained against the Lord, they were punished with snake bites, but the Lord allowed Moses to place a bronze serpent upon a pole. When people looked upon it, they were healed. They admitted that they had disobeyed God. Jesus always did the Father’s will, even accepting death on a cross. The reference to lifting up the Son of Man is a sign of the triumph of the Cross. As we move into the fifth week of Lent, we focus more on the Cross. In what ways are you dying to self, so you may be lifted up with Jesus? Numbers 21:4–9; Psalm 102:2 –3, 16–18, 19–21 (2); John 8:21–30.

Wednesday, April 9 Trust in the Lord

In today’s long reading from Daniel, three faithful Hebrews put their trust in God alone. The Gospel challenges us, not only to know Jesus’s teachings, but to live according to them. Today’s Responsorial Psalm comes from the Canticle of Daniel and echoes the praises and blessings of the Lord proclaimed in the first reading, also from Daniel. Make that prayer your own today: “Be praised and highly exalted forever!” Daniel 3:14–20, 91–92, 95; Daniel 3:52, 53, 54, 55, 56 (52b); John 8:31–42.

Thursday, April 10 I AM

In today’s reading from Genesis, God makes a covenant with Abraham—a solemn promise made to him and his descendants. The psalm (105) affirms this covenant: “He is mindful of his covenant forever.” Christ is the mediator of the new covenant, and we commit our lives to him, the Word made flesh, and the way to the Father. In what ways are you growing in holiness during this season of Lent? Genesis 17:3–9; Psalm 105:4–5, 6–7, 8– 9 (8a); John 8:51–59.

Friday, April 11 Saint Stanislaus

Stanislaus (1030–1079) was an early Polish bishop who opposed a cruel and unjust king and was martyred. In the history of Poland, others also confronted injustices. Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski stood against Naziism, Lech Walesa is a modern human rights activist, and Karol Wojtyla became St. John Paul II, after being pope from 1978–2005. In today’s Gospel, Jesus stands up to the authorities of his day and eludes them when they try to arrest him. In what ways do you oppose evil and injustice?

Jeremiah 20:10–13; Psalm 18:2–3a, 3bc–4, 5–6, 7 (see 7); John 10:31–42

Saturday, April 12 Preparing for Holy Week and Triduum

Today’s readings prepare us for the drama that lies ahead. The prophet Ezekiel speaks of God’s promise to unite Israel into one nation, deliver them from sin, dwell with them, and make them holy. In the Gospel, Caiaphas, the high priest, prophesies that Jesus will die for the nation and gather all together. He does not realize that Jesus will rise from the dead and become the new and eternal high priest. How will you celebrate the holiest time of the year? Plan to participate in at least a part of the Triduum. Ezekiel 37:21–28; Jeremiah 31:10, 11–12abcd, 13 (see 10d); John 11:45–56.

Ezequiel 37:12–14; Salmo 130:1–2, 3–4, 5–6, 7–8; Romanos 8:8 –11; Juan 11:1–45.

Aceptaron haber desobedecido a Dios.
