Programme: HUMAN COMPUTER INTERACTION

As technology moves forward, new methods of communicating with computers are becoming possible. Software developers are required to determine whether software is developed with new techniques or traditional tried and tested methods. The developer also needs to measure how well a computer interacts with a user.

This unit aims to give learners a full understanding of the human computer interface (HCI) and the part it plays in the construction of software that is usable, attractive, efficient and effective. The learner is encouraged to explore how well software interacts with the user, fulfils the user’s needs and makes allowances for different users. The learner should develop a critical appreciation of the advantages and disadvantages of various interfaces currently available and experience the production of a prototype.

Students need to create a report and produce the solution for the following:

A.Explain Developments in HCI with Examples? [p1]

B. Show that a range of Resources of information has been used. [M2] C. Describe at least three example of HCI Application. [p2]

D. Identify the impact of HCI on the workplace. [p3]

E. Report on the issues concerning the implementation of HCI [P4]

F. Explain an effective judgement that have been used in raising issues for the implementation of HCI in question (E). [M1]

G. Go to babytv.com. Justify the interface of the web site for the children and parents. [P5].

H. Demonstrate convergent/lateral/creative thinking that has been used in the justification of the interface in Question (F). [D3]

I. Describe in detail how we can use HCI Technology to for people with disability. [P6]

J. Explain the rules or practical issues to be considered related to the design of an HCI for a specific application. [P7]

K. Build an HCI Prototype for the following ‘ PIZZA2GO ‘ Scenario. [P8]

Introduction

(3)

‘Pizza 2 Go’ is a pizza delivery shop located in Derry. It opened 18 months ago and has quickly established a loyal customer base because of the pizza quality and the fast delivery service provided. The shop is owned and managed by Peter Parker. Peter has asked you to develop an application to assist customers in ordering pizzas electronically.

He has outlined a number of issues he would like addressed. He would like the customers to be able to:

1.

Specify the size of the pizza, namely 8 inch, 12 inch, 14 inch.

2.

Specify the base of the pizza, namely thin crust, regular, deep pan.

3.

Specify the toppings: pineapple, mutton, chicken, green peppers, Jalapeno peppers, mushrooms, green chilli, sweet corn, onions, and tomatoes.

4.

Specify the type of cheese: mozzarella, regular cheddar, low fat.

5.

Calculate the cost of each pizza. The cost is calculated based on the size of pizza and the number of toppings chosen. Two toppings are standard so anything over two requires addition charges.

6.

Enter special requirements specified by the customer.

7.

Maintain a database of customers.

8.

Add details of a new customer to the database.

9.

Any other feature which you deem necessary.

To calculate the cost of a pizza the following data may be used:

Size Price

8 inch £8.50

12 inch £12.50

14 inch £14.50

Extra Toppings £0.50 each

Delivery charge £3 or FREE if order is over £20

L. Explain any unforeseen problems you have encountered during the development of prototype and how could you accommodated that. [D2]

M. Explains the importance of the user interface in your design of the prototype. [P9] N. Describe the steps taken during design process of the Prototype. [P10]

O. An appropriate structure and approach has to be used in the Description of the design process in question (N). [M3]

P. Evaluate the design of the HCI for the prototype developed. [P11]

Q. Demonstrate that self-criticism has taken place in the Investigation of the problem. [D1] R. State and explain any limitations of the design you produced for the prototype. [P12] End of Part-2

Achievement of Pass grade

A pass grade is achieved by meeting all the requirements defined in the assessment criteria for pass for each unit. P1, P3, P3, P4, P5, P6, P7, P8, P9, P10, P11, P12.

Achievement of a merit or distinction grade

All the assessment criteria and merit grade descriptors need to be completed within a unit to achieve a merit grade. M1, M2, M3.

All the assessment criteria merit and distinction grade descriptors must be completed within a unit to achieve a distinction grade. D1, D2, D3.

The pass criteria and merit and distinction grade will be analysed and justified from a report consist of four parts each part relates to a requirement..

Any act of plagiarism and collusion will be seriously dealt with according to the regulations. In this context the definition and scope of plagiarism are presented below:

‘Plagiarism occurs when a student misrepresents, as his/her own work, the work, written or otherwise, of any other person (including another student) or of any institution. Examples of forms of plagiarism

include1:

the verbatim (word for word) copying of another’s work without appropriate and correctly presented acknowledgement;

the close paraphrasing of another’s work by simply changing a few words or altering the order of presentation, without appropriate and correctly presented acknowledgement;

unacknowledged quotation of phrases from another’s work;

The deliberate and detailed presentation of another’s concept as one’s own.’

All types of work submitted by students are covered by this definition, including, written work, diagrams, designs, engineering drawings and pictures.

‘Collusion occurs when, unless with official approval (e.g. in the case of group projects), two or more students consciously collaborate in the preparation and production of work which is ultimately submitted by each in an identical, or substantially similar, form and/or is represented by each to be the product of his or her individual efforts. Collusion also occurs where there is unauthorized co-operation between a student and another person in the preparation and production of work which is presented as the student’s own. (ibid)’

Extension and Late Submission

If an extension is necessary for a valid reason, requests can me made using a course work extension request form available from the college. Please note that the lecturers do not have the authority to extend the coursework deadlines and therefore do not ask them to award a coursework extension.

The completed form must be accompanied by evidence such as a medical certificate in the event of you being sick.
