An overflow pipe -C- is screwed into the opening of the inspection plug in the oil pan.
– Unscrew and remove overflow pipe -C-.
– Allow remaining ATF to drain off.
– Screw in overflow pipe -C-; tightening torque
→ Anchor.
Note
Overflow pipes of different lengths are installed on different gearbox versions. For correct part refer to → Electronic parts catalogue.
– Remove oil pan and allow remaining ATF to drain → Chapter.
Note
The oil pan has to be removed from the gearbox when changing the ATF. This is necessary in order to change the required quantity of approx. 6 ltr.
If the ATF is only drained by removing the overflow pipe -C-, the quantity drained will be only about 3.5 ltr.

– Fill with 6 ltr. of ATF.
Note
If the gearbox oil pan has not been removed, only 3.5 to 4 ltr. of ATF will have to be filled.
However, this quantity is not sufficient for an ATF change.
– Start engine and allow to run at idling speed.
– With the engine idling, press the brake pedal and shift the selector lever through all the selector lever positions leaving the selector lever at least 10 seconds in each position.
– Shift selector lever into position “N”.

Test conditions
Gearbox must not be in emergency running (backup) mode.
Vehicle must be level (horizontal).
Selector lever in position “P”, engine idling.
Air conditioner and heating system switched off.
The ATF temperature at the beginning of the test must not be higher than 30°C. If necessary, first allow the gearbox to cool down.
Note
The ATF temperature is taken from the reading on the vehicle diagnostic tester.
The ATF level will vary according to the ATF temperature.

vw-wi://rl/A.en-GB.A00.5Q70.29.wi::79817282.xml?xsl=3
If the ATF level is checked when the ATF temperature is too low, this will result in overfilling.
If the ATF level is checked when the ATF temperature is too high, this will result in underfilling.
Use only the correct type of ATF (available as a replacement part) for the planetary gearing in 8-speed automatic gearbox 0C8.
Other types of oil cause faults and/or failure of the gearbox; note ATF specification for the different engine types and refer to
→ Chapter.
Caution
The engine must not be started and vehicle must not be towed without ATF in gearbox.
The ATF level must not be too low or too high, otherwise this would impair the function of the gearbox.
If the ATF circuit to the radiator was opened during repair work, the test must be performed twice. Important:
after the first test, the ATF must be heated to at least 80 °C - perform test drive with test equipment! When the ATF has cooled off again, check the ATF level again as described in this section.
ATF temperature reading
– Connect vehicle diagnostic tester and select following menu items:
Vehicle self-diagnosis 02 - Gearbox electronics Measured values Temperature
Checking and correcting ATF level
Note
The ATF level is checked at the ATF inspection hole.
The ATF level is correct if a small amount of fluid comes out at the ATF inspection hole when ATF temperature is between 35°
C and 45°C, or 50°C in hot climates (the fluid level rises due to expansion as it warms up).

The ATF present in the overflow pipe runs out.
Note
Even when the fluid level is too low a small amount of fluid will first drain out of the overflow pipe, as it fills up during operation.
The ATF inspection plug must be screwed in again at the latest when ATF reaches a temperature of 45 °C (countries with hot climates: 50 °C).
If ATF continues to come out of the
inspection hole before the ATF has reached 40 °C the ATF level is OK.
If no ATF comes out of the inspection hole before the ATF has reached 40 °C the ATF level is not OK; top up ATF → Anchor.
If ATF level is OK:
– Always renew seal -arrow- for inspection plug.

Checking and topping up ATF level
– Tighten ATF inspection plug -1- with new seal; tightening torque → Anchor.
The ATF level check is now completed.

Caution The adapter for oil filling -VAS 6262 A- must be clean; the ATF must not be mixed with any other types of lubricant.
– Shake container before opening.
– Screw ATF container onto adapter for oil filling -VAS 6262 A-;
for part number refer to → Electronic parts catalogue.
Note If thread on ATF container does not fit onto adapter for oil filling -VAS 6262 A-, use additional adapter -VAS 6262/6-.
– Allow ATF to run into gearbox.
Checking and topping up ATF level
Now check the ATF level (check as often as necessary):
– Disconnect quick-release coupling on adapter for oil filling -VAS 6262 A-.
The ATF present in the overflow pipe runs out.
If ATF continues to come out of the
inspection hole before the ATF has reached 40 °C the ATF level is OK.
If no ATF comes out of the inspection hole before the ATF temperature reaches 40 °C, continue to top up with ATF and check the level until it is OK.
If ATF level is OK:
– Allow excess ATF to drain off.
In this case, the ATF does not need to be topped up further; the level is OK.
Note
ATF that has drained off must not be refilled or reused. Dispose of the ATF properly.
– Always renew seal -arrow- for inspection plug.

Measure length of breather pipe on adapter for oil filling -VAS 6262 A- and shorten if necessary.
To ensure that breather pipe of adapter for oil filling -VAS 6262 A- does not make contact with bottom of oil container, breather pipe must be shortened to dimension -a-.
Dimension -a- = 210 mm
Note
Dimension -a- is measured from stem (green area in magnified view) of adapter for oil filling - VAS 6262 A-.
– Mark length on breather pipe and shorten breather pipe using pipe cutter -6056/2-.
– Clean adapter for oil filling -VAS 6262 A-.

Gearbox adaption
One of the essentials for optimum and consistent gear shifting, apart from favourable design parameters, is the accurate control of the selector elements. In order to keep the gear shift quality at a consistently high level throughout the service life of the gearbox, it is necessary to continuously adapt various open and closed-loop control parameters and to store the calculated adaption values.
This process of adaptation or learning is referred to as adaption.
The objective of gearbox adaption is to compensate for variations in gearbox components during manufacture (i.e. tolerances) and throughout their service life. The adaption values take the form of offsets which can be added to or subtracted from the applied values permanently stored in the gearbox control unit.
When should the adaption values be read / assessed / deleted and when should an adaption drive be performed?
Customer complains that gear shifts are rough After an ATF change
After repairs to the clutches After renewing the valve body
After renewing the automatic gearbox control unit -J217- After renewing the gearbox
After a software update
After certain repairs to the engine, e.g. after renewing the air mass meter.
– It is important to follow closely all the instructions, work procedures and conditions in the “Guided Functions”.
– With vehicle diagnostic tester connected, select Guided Functions, 02 - Gearbox electronics 0C8 I J217 and run function J217 - Gearbox control unit, adaption drive (Rep. Gr. 38).
Note
After deleting the adaption values, an adaption drive must be performed using the "Guided Functions" or "Guided Fault
Finding". If the adaption drive is not possible, for whatever reason, an extensive road test must be performed. Try to maintain the adaption conditions as closely as possible.
General adaption conditions
An adaption can be performed only if the defined adaption conditions have been met.
The criteria below apply during the adaption:
The ATF temperature must be within a defined range.
Defined gear or gear shift.
The engine load must be within a defined range. A very low engine load or a light throttle application is usually required.
No fault memory entries in the gearbox control unit.
Gearbox adaption
A particular driving condition must prevail (e.g. throttle applied or overrun mode, constant driving mode, vehicle stopped with engine idling, etc.).
Good road conditions, best possible road surface, no steep uphill or downhill gradients, flat stretch of road.
