Our Mission

The Miami Bayside Foundation is a nonprofit organization designed to advance economic development in the City of Miami through the support of minority businesses and education.

The Miami Bayside Foundation seeks to do this through the creation and administration of a loan program for minority businesses, through the creation of programs and educational scholarships for minorities, and by providing technical assistance to local organizations engaged in economic development.

Dear friends and supporters,

During 2012, the Miami Bayside Foundation pursued its mission of advancing economic development in the City of Miami by focusing on opportunities to support ongoing educational efforts, expanding our technical assistance program to minority businesses, and growing our loan portfolio to minority businesses in the City of Miami.

In April, the Foundation made a gift of $200,000 to Florida Memorial University to establish a scholarship endowment  for City of Miami students interested in business and entrepreneurship.

I am very happy to report that a total of 108 scholarships were awarded during the year; almost double the amount in 2011. Thirty-nine Miami Bayside Foundation First Generation Scholarships were awarded at Florida International University; 65 Miami Bayside Foundation Scholarships were awarded at Miami-Dade College and four at Florida Memorial University.

In November, in an effort to reach students at an earlier stage in their educational development, the Foundation made a $50,000 gift to Breakthrough Miami. This award-winning organization provides a tuition-free, eight-year academic enrichment program that serves motivated students in the 5th through 12th grades from disadvantaged communities.

The Foundation awarded three loans to minority businesses in the City of Miami. These loans helped create 48 new jobs. The Foundation also provides valuable business tools and resources such as counseling and training in business development, management and technical assistance. In 2012, the Foundation renewed its partnership with SCORE Miami-Dade, an important resource for small business advice and mentoring. Through this partnership, during 2012, more than 50 small business owners were provided technical assistance, mentorship and workshops free of charge.

None of this would have been possible without the support of our Board members who work tirelessly to fulfill the Foundation’s mission as well as the support of our generous donors. I am especially grateful to Bayside Marketplace and General Growth Properties, who since the establishment of the Foundation in 1986, have been instrumental in the Foundation´s growth, for their largest ever contribution of $330,663 during 2102.

As we look forward to another promising year of educational advancement and minority business success in the City of Miami, we are excited to be establishing new and stronger relationships, developing new initiatives, creating more educational partnerships, and establishing a Micro Loan Program, in an effort to support minority businesses and education. We are excited as well to be receiving our first grant from the City of Miami/CDBG allowing us to strengthen our technical assistence program.

Sincerely,

Nathan Kurland

About Us

In the early 1980s, prior to the ground-breaking of Bayside Marketplace, the City of Miami and Bayside Marketplace developer Jim Rouse began discussing ideas for an organization that would support minority entrepreneurs in the City of Miami. In 1986, the Miami Bayside Foundation was created from this partnership as a means to revitalize and serve the City of Miami’s downtown economic core.

The Miami Bayside Foundation currently provides minority businesses in the City of Miami access to funds through a loan program. It also provides invaluable business tools and resources such as counseling and training in business development and management and other related services, through partnerships with local community organizations engaged in economic development.

A special charter of The Miami Bayside Foundation is the creation of a vocational and educational scholarship endowment fund for minority students. Since its creation, the Foundation has provided 256 scholarships. The Foundation currently has a scholarship endowment of close to $1 million at Miami Dade College and has recently created additional scholarship endowments at Florida International University (FIU) and Florida Memorial University (FMU). In 2012 the Foundation made a five-year gift to Breakthough Miami, an academic enrichment program that provides motivated middle school students from underserved communities with the tools they need to achieve their most ambitious goals in life.
