Promoting Adoption of

Evidence-Based Practice

INSTITUTE PURPOSE

The purpose of the Institute is to educate nursing leaders to guide colleagues and staff in the integration of evidence-based knowledge into practice.

INSTITUTE GOALS

1. To promote advanced skills of nursing leaders in the use of evidence-based practice models.

2. To develop leadership skills for facilitating completion of clinically relevant evidence-based practice

projects.

3. To foster creative thinking, networks, and resolution of issues found in the evidence-based

practice process.

INSTITUTE OBJECTIVES

At the completion of the Institute, participants will be able to:

1. Identify strategies for implementation of evidence-based practice changes in complex health care

systems.

2. Describe the organizational infrastructure necessary for evidence-based practice.

3. Use an evidence-based practice implementation guidebook with tools and resources to promote

evidence-based practice.

4. Discuss methods to sustain evidence-based changes in practice.

5. Develop a plan for demonstrating an impact from use of evidence in practice

6. Train nurses in the evidence-based practice process.

7. Develop a specific evidence-based practice clinical topic.

INSTITUTE DESCRIPTION

This Institute is designed to develop the advanced skills necessary for nurse leaders to promote and lead teams in adoption and integration of evidence-based practices.

Developing a scientific base for practice is important for nursing and is a requirement for Magnet Hospital status and accreditation by regulatory agencies such as the JCAHO.

Topics discussed in the Institute include:

 Selecting clinical issues to address through the evidence-based practice process;

 Finding and evaluating the evidence;

 Utilizing or modifying organizational infrastructures;

 Integrating evidence-based practices into the system;

 Evaluating evidence-based changes in practice; and

 Sustaining evidence-based changes in practice.

LEARNING METHODS

Learning will be facilitated through a combination of group discussion, didactic sharing, facilitated work time, networking and consultation.

PRODUCTS PROVIDED

Participants of the Institute will receive:

1. A training manual

2. CD with PowerPoint presentations

3. Access to evidence-based practice CEU online course

4. An implementation guidebook: “Evidence-Based Practice Building Blocks: Comprehensive

Strategies, Tools, and Tips”

5. Pre-requisite readings, for example:

a. Titler, M.G., Kleiber, C., Rakel, B., et al. (2001). The Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice to

Promote Quality Care. Critical Care Nursing Clinics of North America, 13(4):497-509

b. Cullen, L., & Adams, S. (2012). Planning for implementation of evidence-based practice.

Journal of Nursing Administration, 42(4), 222-230.

6. Consultation with a librarian with expertise in evidence-based practice literature searches

7. Small group consultation during the Institute to facilitate project development

8. Up to 3 one hour telephone consultations 1:1 with our faculty for up to 1 year following Institute

attendance

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE INSTITUTE

 RN employed in practice at least 50% time

 Minimum BSN degree, Masters preferred

 Leadership responsibilities for evidence-based practice

 Participants are required to identify a topic/project to work on during the Institute. If assistance is

 Completion of pre-requisite readings

CEUs

CEUs will be granted by the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics’ Department of Nursing (Iowa Board of Nursing Approved Provider # 34). Participants must attend the entire program each day to receive full credit.

REGISTRATION FEE

The $1500 registration may be paid online by clicking hereor by check payable to University of

Iowa Hospitals and Clinics-Department of Nursing. Requests to cancel must be received in writing, postmarked on or before January 14, 2015. A processing fee of $100 will be deducted from your refund.

will be accepted in order of receipt of application and payment.)

NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE

Acceptance letters will be emailed by January 28, 2015. We reserve the right to cancel the program if it is not full. In the unlikely event that happens, you would be placed in the next available program or your registration fee fully refunded.
