Expert tuition

At the heart of our Summer School is an intensive academic programme. This will give participants the chance to increase their subject knowledge and improve their practical skills, with the support of our experienced academics, researchers and mentors. Focused, expert tuition in our world class facilities will stretch the students academically, helping them to push through new boundaries in their subject field and gain a valuable insight into life at one of the world’s top universities.

Team work

In the first week all students will join one of the following learning streams:

• Engineering

• Medicine and Life Sciences

• Physical Sciences

Each stream incorporates a mixture of practical activities, lectures and seminars and a high level of practical laboratory work to develop knowledge and skills in a specific subject area.

In the second week, students will work in teams to apply what they have learnt to a real-world problem relevant to the challenges faced by industry. Teams will present their solutions at a final showcase event, with some fantastic prizes available to reward the best ideas.

Study

CAREERS ADVICE AND

GUIDANCE SEMINARS

In addition to the academic programme, students will also be given an

opportunity to attend a series of seminars designed to help them with their career planning and university applications. For example, sessions might cover:

• career planning

• UCAS and applying to universities in the UK

• how to write a personal statement

• interview skills

• applying to medicine in the UK.

I particularly

enjoyed how the

lectures that we were

given linked so well to the

experimental work we

did and the presentations

and projects.”

Live

Accommodation in the heart of London

Over 90% of Imperial undergraduates choose to live in our halls of residence in their first year; our Summer School students will get the chance to experience living in university accommodation, as they will be allocated a place in a hall on our South Kensington Campus:

• Students will typically share a twin room with another Summer School student of the same gender.

• All rooms will be in single-sex clusters.

The safety of our students is of paramount importance. An experienced team of Summer School staff will provide support and care around the clock:

• Students stay in secure halls of residence on campus – all halls have swipe card or fob entry, CCTV and 24-hour manned security offices.

• Residential staff are available in all halls.

• Students are supervised on Summer School social activities and outings – the option for students to participate in unsupervised activities is available subject to parental permission being obtained in advance.

• Key members of staff hold qualifications in child protection. The Summer School will be action packed so we provide three nutritious meals per day to make sure our students keep their energy up for the tasks ahead. We can cater for a range of diets with advance notice.

I met new awesome

people and experienced

student life in London. Both

weeks expanded my knowledge

tremendously and helped me to

choose the right course

for university.”

Make the most of your time in London

Like the real Imperial student experience, the Summer School isn’t all about work – we’ve also designed a packed schedule of excursions and activities to make sure that students use their time in one of the world’s most exciting cities to the full.

The evening and weekend activity programme will include a range of activities, such as:

• day trips to other cities such as Oxford or Cambridge, or visits to nearby attractions like Harry Potter World

• a wide range of sports activities

• sightseeing tours of London

• a visit to a West End musical

• producing a talent show

• visits to museums and galleries.

Students will be accompanied to social activities by our fantastic Residential Mentors who are current Imperial students, enabling Summer School participants to find out first-hand what it’s like to study here.

Our Mentor made the

whole experience really

enjoyable and she was

really good at explaining

anything that may not have

been fully understood.”
