Welcome to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and School.

We gather to worship the only God and Savior: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

God can make us generous

September 26, 2021

Toward a more generous way of living: This stewardship series teaches us to look at the Lord's generosity, thank him for it, and strive to imitate his generosi- ty in our lives.

In week three, we are once more reminded that the generous person's right- eousness endures forever. The reason we Christians can be generous is that God is able to make us generous. He is willing and able to supply all that we need to be generous people.

Today’s 8:00 a.m. worship is broadcast live on YouTube. The YouTube link can be found at the church’s website:

After the service, the recording can be accessed at the same YouTube site.

C: Amen.

P: Give thanks to the Lord, who is good.

C: God’s love is everlasting.

P: Come, let us praise God joyfully.

C: Let us come to God with thanksgiving.

P: For the good world; for things great and small, beautiful and awesome; for seen and unseen splendors;

C: for human life; for talking and moving and thinking together; for common hopes and hardships shared from birth until our dying;

P: for work to do and strength to work; for partnership in labor; for exchanges of good humor and encouragement;

C: for marriage; for the mystery and joy of flesh made one; for mutual for- giveness and burdens shared; for secrets kept in love:

All: We thank you, O God.

P: For family; for living together and eating together; for family amusements and family pleasures;

C: for children; for their energy and curiosity; for their brave play and star- tling frankness; for their sudden sympathies;

P: for the young; for their high hopes; for their candid criticism; for their search for freedom;

C: for growing up and growing old; for wisdom deepened by experience; for rest in leisure; for time made precious by its passing:

P: for your help in times of trouble and sorrow; for healing our diseases; for preserving us in temptation and danger:

All: We thank you, O God.

P: For your church into which we have been called; for the good news we re- ceive by Word and sacrament; for our life together in the Lord;

(3)

C: for your Holy Spirit, who guides our steps and brings us gifts of faith and love, who prays in us and prompts our grateful worship:

All: We praise you, O God.

P: Above all, O God, for your Son, Jesus Christ, who lived and died and lives again for our salvation; for our hope in him; and for the joy of serving him:

C: We thank and praise you, eternal God, for all your goodness to us.

P: Give thanks to the Lord, who is good.

C: God’s love is everlasting.

Prayer of the Day P: Let us pray.

O merciful Creator, your hand is wide open to satisfy the needs of every liv- ing creature. Make us always thankful for your loving providence; and grant that we, remembering the richness of your grace, may be faithful stewards of all your good gifts; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

C: Amen.

The Word First Lesson—1 Chronicles 29:10-18

David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying,

“Praise be to you, Lord, the God of our father Israel, from everlasting to ever- lasting. Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the maj- esty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to ex- alt and give strength to all. Now, our God, we give you thanks, and praise your glorious name.

“But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as gener- ously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand. We are foreigners and strangers in your sight, as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a temple for your Holy Name comes from your hand, and all of it belongs to you. I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity. All these things I have given willingly and with honest intent. And now I have seen with joy how willingly your people who are here have given to you. Lord, the God of our fa- thers Abraham, Isaac and Israel, keep these desires and thoughts in the hearts of your people forever, and keep their hearts loyal to you.”

Song May the Peoples Praise You (inspired by Psalm 67) You have called us out of darkest night, into your glorious light, that we may sing the wonders of the risen Christ.

May our every breath retell the grace that broke into our strife with boundless love and deepest joy, with endless life.

(refrain)

May the peoples praise you, let the nations be glad!

All your blessing comes that we may praise, may praise the name of Jesus.

All the earth is yours and all within, each harvest is your own, and from your hand we give to you, to make Christ known.

May the seeds of mercy grow in us for those who have not heard, may songs of praise build lives of grace to spread your Word.

(refrain)

This our holy priv’lege to declare your praises and your name to every nation, tribe and tongue your church proclaim.

(refrain)

Holy, holy, is the Lord Almighty. Worthy, worthy is the Lamb who was slain.

Holy, holy, is the Lord Almighty. All creation praise your glorious name.

(refrain)

Second Lesson—2 Corinthians 9:6-15

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written: “He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his right- eousness endures forever.”

(6)

Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteous-

ness. You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.

This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obe- dience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

Please stand.

Gospel—Mark 14:1-9

Now the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread were only two days away, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were scheming to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. “But not during the festival,” they said, “or the peo- ple may riot.”

While he was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on his head.

Some of those present were saying indignantly to one another, “Why this waste of perfume? It could have been sold for more than a year’s wages and the mon- ey given to the poor.” And they rebuked her harshly.

“Leave her alone,” said Jesus. “Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want. But you will not always have me. She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my buri- al. Truly I tell you, wherever the gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.”

P: This is the Gospel of our Lord.

C: Praise be to you, O Christ!

Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe that God created me and all that exists, and that he gave me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my mind and all my abili- ties.

And I believe that God still preserves me by richly and daily providing clothing and shoes, food and drink, property and home, spouse and chil- dren, land, cattle, and all I own, and all I need to keep my body and life.

God also preserves me by defending me against all danger, guarding and protecting me from all evil.

All this God does only because he is my good and merciful Father in heav- en, and not because I have earned or deserved it. For all this I ought to thank and praise, to serve and obey him.

This is most certainly true.

Please be seated.

Offering

The Lord is a generous God who richly and daily provides for our needs, redeems us from sin, and builds us up in faith and love. We thank and praise him for all this with our head, with our heart, and with our hands. Bringing offerings to worship is one of the ways we thank and praise him.

You may place your offering in the baskets set up at the front of the sanctuary. You may also use the church website’s Online Giving. The QR code at right

will also take you to the giving site. Thank you for your offerings.

Musical Offering Prayer of the Church

P: Lord God, open our eyes to the beauty of your created world. You made all things to nourish our lives and to fill us with wonder and joy.

C: Open our mouths to praise and thank you for your gifts.

P: For bountiful harvests, for the freedoms we enjoy, for family and friends, for all the blessings we receive, we thank you, O Lord. We truly are blessed to have a God who meets and exceeds our every need. It is amazing that we have been so blessed, especially when we consider that we do not deserve any of it. And yet, O Lord, you continue to amaze, inspire, and provide.

C: As we are once again reminded of your goodness, lead us to give you the thanks you deserve.

(10)

P: Dear God, thank you for the light of your truth. We live in a world racing toward the day of judgment. So many people whom you love and for whom you died live in the darkness of error and unbelief. But in your Word, you have revealed the truth that leads to eternal life and you graciously led us to know our Savior.

C: Keep us close to your Word so that the Holy Spirit may work through the gospel of your forgiveness.

P: Lord, we are not worthy to be guests at your holy table. But you are the friend of sinners, and you will not cast us out. This bread is your body, which bore our sins upon the tree. This wine is your blood, which purifies us from all guilt.

C: At your invitation, we come rejoicing. Receive us, our Savior.

Special prayers and intercessions.

P: Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private prayers.

Silent prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come,

your will be done on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

The Sacrament

P: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

P: Lift up your hearts.

(11)

P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is good and right so to do.

P: It is truly good and right so to do, for he has called us to be his own so that we may live under him in his kingdom and serve him in everlasting right- eousness, innocence, and blessedness.

Words of Institution

P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night he was betrayed, took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my † body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Then he took the cup, gave thanks and gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; this is my † blood of the new covenant, which is poured out for you for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remem- brance of me.”

The peace of the Lord be with you always.

C: Amen.

Please be seated.

Thanksgiving and Blessing

P: O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.

C: And his mercy endures forever.

C: Amen.

Letter

Brothers and sisters in Christ,

The Washington Department of Health put into effect an updated mask order on Au- gust 23, 2021. The order calls for the wearing of masks by everyone over five years of age in public indoor settings regardless of vaccination status.

Holy Trinity Church and School seeks to abide by this order of the health department.

We respectfully ask that masks be worn at worship according to the order. If for some reason this presents a special difficulty in your individual case, please speak with an el- der or the pastor with your concerns. We do not want to turn anyone away from wor- ship. We desire that as many people as possible gather in person around Word and sac- rament.

We ask for understanding in these challenging times as we seek to gather everyone around the means of grace while also seeking to abide by the government’s order. Wor- ship is crucial. We need one another, and we need the Lord’s promises in our lives.
