TheThinkPadUSBPortableSecureHardDrive(hereaftercalledtheSecure HardDrive)isaportable,light-weight,high-speedUSB2.0standardoption thatoffershighleveldatasecurity.InadditiontoalltheregularUSBharddisk drivefunctions,italsoprovidesyouwithaneasy-to-usefulldiskencryption solution.AllthefunctionsareintegratedintotheSecureHardDrive,therefore,

youcanmanagepasswordsandaccesstheSecureHardDrivewithoutusing

othersoftwareapplications.

TheSecureHardDrivehasthreeworkingmodes:

v StandbyMode(Inthismode,theSecureHardDriveislocked.)

v UserMode(Inthismode,theSecureHardDriveisunlocked.)

ThischapterprovidesinformationaboutinstallingtheSecureHardDrive.

Before

you

begin

the

installation

Besuretoreviewthefollowinginformationbeforeyoubegintoinstallanduse theSecureHardDrive.

Attention: Useonlythecablesthatcomewiththisoption.Youmightdamage

thedriveifyouuseacablenotincludedwiththeoptionpackage.Theoption isdesignedforportableusewithoutanACpoweradapter.Donotattachan ACpoweradaptertothisdrive.

v ToavoiddamagingyourSecureHardDrive,handlewithcare.When

transportingthedriveorwhenitisnotinuse,placeitinthecarryingcase thatcomeswiththeoption.

v ForreliableperformanceoftheSecureHardDrive,makesurethatbothUSB

cablesareattacheddirectlyfromthedrivetothecomputerUSBconnectors

ortoanAC-poweredUSBhub.DonotconnecttheUSBcablestoa

non-poweredUSBhub.

1. AttachoneendoftheauxiliarypowercabletotheSecureHardDrive,and

thenattachtheotherendtoanavailableUSBportonyourcomputer,as shown:

Mode,AdminMode,andUserModeofyourSecureHardDrive.

Entering

the

Standby

Mode

TheStandbyModeisthedefaultworkingmodeoftheSecureHardDriveand

isthegatewaytootherworkingmodes.

ToentertheStandbyMode,attachtheSecureHardDrivetoyourcomputer. ThedriveautomaticallygoesintoStandbyModeandtheindicatorlightturns red.Inthismode,theSecureHardDriveislocked.Itcannotberecognizedby theoperatingsystemanditdoesnotprovideeithertheregularfunctionsorthe encryptionfunction.However,itenablesyoutoenterandswitchbetweenthe

AdminModeandtheUserMode.

Note: ToswitchbetweentheAdminModeandtheUserMode,youare

requiredtoswitchtotheStandbyModefirst,andthenyoucanenterthe modeofyourchoice.

Entering

Mode

Note: TheSecureHardDrivecannotberecognizedbytheoperatingsystemin

theAdminMode.

ToentertheAdminMode,dothefollowing:

1. AttachtheUSBcabletoanavailableUSBportonyourcomputer.The

SecureHardDrivegoesintotheStandbyMode,andtheindicatorlight turnsred.

2. Pressandhold

+0forfivesecondsuntiltheindicatorlightflashesred. ThisindicatesthatyoucanentertheAdminPassword.

3. EntertheAdminPasswordandpress

.ThedefaultAdminPasswordis 123456.TheSecureHardDriveisinAdminModewhentheindicatorlight haschangedtoblue.

Note: Iftheindicatorlightflashesredforafewseconds,indicatingtheSecure

HardDrivehasreturnedtotheStandbyMode,gobacktoStep2.Thisis duetooneofthefollowingconditions:

Management

Thissectionprovidesinformationaboutmanagingyourpasswordinthe

AdminModeandUserMode.

Changing

YoucanchangetheAdminPasswordbydoingthefollowing:

1. EnterAdminMode.

2. Pressandhold

+9untiltheindicatorlightflashesblue.

3. Enterthenewpassword(aminimumof6digitsandamaximumof16

digits)andpress

1. TheSecureHardDriveenablesyoutohaveupto10UserPasswordsin

AdminMode.Whentheindicatorlightflashesredthreetimesandthen returnstosolidblue,thisindicatesthatthelimithasbeenreached,andno additionalUserPasswordscanbeadded.

2. IfnoactivityisdetectedwithintwominutesintheAdminMode,itwill

returntotheStandbyMode.

YoucandeleteallUserPasswordsbydoingthefollowing: 1. EntertheAdminMode.

2. Pressandhold7+8+

forfivesecondsuntiltheindicatorlightflashes blueintermittently.Aftertheindicatorlightflashesgreenthreetimesand thenblueintermittently.

3. Pressandhold7+8+

asecondtimeforfivesecondsuntiltheindicator lightgoesonsolidgreenforthreesecondsandthenbacktosolidblue,this indicatesthattheUserPasswordsweredeletedsuccessfully.

Changing

the

User

Password

YoucanchangetheUserPasswordbydoingthefollowing: 1. EntertheUserMode.

2. Pressandhold

+1forfivesecondsuntiltheindicatorlightflashesred. 3. EnterthecurrentUserPasswordandpress

.Theindicatorlightturns greenforthreeseconds,andthenitwillflashblueintermittently.

intermittently,gobacktoStep4.Thisisduetooneofthefollowing conditions:

v Youwaitedlongerthan10secondsbeforeenteringapassword.

resetting

the

Secure

Hard

Drive

IfyouforgetalltheUserPasswordsorAdminPasswords,youcanperforma completeresettoremovealltheUserPasswords,andrestoretheAdmin Passwordtothedefault123456.

Attention: CompletelyresettingtheSecureHardDrivewilleraseallthedata

onthedrive.YouwillneedtopartitionandformattheSecureHardDrivewith diskmanagementapplications.

Toperformacompleteresetofthedrive,dothefollowing: 1. Pressandholdthe

buttonwhileyouattachtheSecureHardDriveto anavailableUSBportonyourcomputer.Theindicatorlightwillflashblue andredalternately.

Note: Ifnoactivityisdetectedfor30secondsinthisstep,theSecureHard

DrivewillgointotheStandbyMode. 2. Pressandhold

+

+2for10secondsuntiltheindicatorlightturns solidgreenforthreeseconds.YouhavesuccessfullyresettheSecureHard Drive.

Initializing

and

formatting

the

Secure

Hard

Drive

after

a

complete

reset

AcompleteresetoftheSecureHardDrivewilleraseallinformationand partitionsettings.YouwillneedtoinitializeandformattheSecureHardDrive. ToinitializeyourSecureHardDrive,dothefollowing:

1. Afteracompletereset,attachtheSecureHardDrivetothecomputer.

2. EnterthedefaultUserPassword123456andpress

toentertheUser Mode.

3. WaituntiltheoperatingsystemsuccessfullyinstallsalltheUSBdevice

driversfortheSecureHardDrive.

4. Right-clickMycomputer,andthenclickManagefromtheWindows

desktop.

5. IntheComputerManagewindow,clickDiskManagement.IntheDisk

Managementwindow,theSecureHardDriveisrecognizedasan

unknowndevicethatisuninitializedandunallocated.

6. Dooneofthefollowingtomakethedriverecognizedasabasicdrive.

v IftheInitializeandConvertDiskWizardwindowopens,clickNext

NextFinish.

v IftheInitializeandConvertDiskWizardwindowdoesnotopen:

a. Right-clickUnknownDisk,andthenselectInitializeDisk.

b. IntheInitializeDiskwindow,clickOK.

7. Right-clickintheblankareaundertheUnallocatedsection,andthen

selectNewPartition.TheWelcometotheNewPartitionWizardwindow opens.

8. ClickNext.

9. SelectPrimarypartitionandclickNext.

10. Ifyouneedonlyonepartition,acceptthedefaultpartitionsizeandclick

Next. 11. ClickNext.

12. Createavolumelabel,selectPerformaquickformat,andthenclickNext.

13. ClickFinish.

14. Waituntiltheformatprocessiscomplete.TheSecureHardDrivewillbe

recognizedanditisavailableforuse.

Using

the

ThinkVantage

Rescue

and

Recovery

program

with

the

Secure

Hard

Drive

IftheThinkVantage®

RescueandRecovery®

programisavailableonyour computer,youcanusetheSecureHardDriveasastoragedevice.Tousethe

ThinkVantageRescueandRecoveryprogramwiththeSecureHardDrive,do

thefollowing:

1. AttachtheSecureHardDrivetoanavailableUSBportonyourcomputer.

2. EnteryourUserPasswordorAdminPasswordandpress

toenterthe

Usermode.

3. WaituntiltheoperatingsystemrecognizestheSecureHardDrive.

4. CreatebackupsandstorethemontheSecureHardDriveusingRescue

andRecoveryprogram.

5. Turnoffyourcomputer.

6. RestartyourcomputerwiththeSecureHardDriveattachedtothe

computer.

7. PressF12topausethestartprocess,astheSecureHardDriveneeds

severalsecondstounlockitselfafterenteringtheUserMode.

8. WhentheSecureHardDriveispoweredonandavailable,theindicator

lightturnssolidred.EnteryourUserpasswordandpress

toenterthe

UserMode.

9. IftheSecureHardDriveisnotdisplayedinthebootlist,restartthe

computerbypressingCtrl+Alt+DelwhiletheSecureHardDrive remainsattachedtothecomputer.

BesuretosaveandcloseallthefilesonyourSecureHardDrivebefore hibernating,suspending,orloggingofffromtheWindowsoperatingsystem.It isrecommendedthatyoulogofftheSecureHardDrivemanuallybefore hibernating,suspending,orloggingofffromyoursystem.TologofftheSecure

HardDrive,double-clickSafelyRemoveHardwareontheWindowsdesktop

andremovetheSecureHardDrivefromyourcomputer.

Attention: ToensurethedataintegrityofyourSecureHardDrive,besureto

lockorlogoffyourSecureHardDriveifyouare: v awayfromyourcomputer
