Reading Kindle titles on your PC or Mac

If you do not own a Kindle device (or an iPad, Android, or iPhone with the Kindle app installed), you have two options for reading a Kindle title:

A) Kindle Cloud Reader

• The “Cloud Reader” lets you open titles using only your browser.

• Note: this only works if you have either a Firefox, Safari (version 5) or Chrome

browser installed (on a PC or Mac). Internet Explorer is not yet supported.

• See the attached instructions labeled “A) Using the Kindle Cloud Reader” (p. 2) • If you do not have Firefox, Safari (version 5) or Chrome, you can install the

Kindle application (see option “B” below). B) Install the Kindle Application

• For Mac owners:

• See the attached instructions labeled “B1) Installing the Kindle Mac App” (p. 9)

• For PC/Windows owners:

• See the attached instructions labeled “B2) Installing the Kindle PC App” (p. 14)

A) Using the Kindle

Cloud Reader

Note: Requires a Firefox, Chrome, or Safari (version 5) Browser

on your PC or Mac

1) Setting up your own Kindle Cloud Reader

Amazon provides a free web-based “Kindle Cloud Reader” that will let you read ebooks purchased in the Amazon

Kindle Store using only a web page, on either a Mac or a PC. To get started, open a Web Browser and go to the URL

http://read.amazon.com.

Then click the button labeled “Sign in to get started”.

... and follow the installation instructions that then appear. It takes only a minute and

2) Logging on to Amazon

Open www.amazon.com. Sign in using your

Amazon.com account

(usually an email address and password).

Note: If you don’t have an Amazon account, set one up now so you can buy ebooks at Amazon.

3) Finding an eBook to buy on Amazon

Open www.amazon.com (if you have not already!).

Enter the name of the eBook you are searching for in the Search field.

For example, entering “Joan: Forty Years” is enough to

4) Buying an eBook

To purchase and send the ebook to your Kindle Cloud Reader, click the pop-up under “Deliver to:” and choose the Cloud Reader option.

Note: If no option to deliver to the Cloud Reader appears, go back to step 1 and make sure you’ve set up a Cloud Reader account tied to the same Amazon account you use to buy ebooks!

5) Opening an eBook in the Kindle Cloud Reader

Once you’ve set yourself up on the Kindle Cloud Reader, and then purchased ebooks you want to read in the

Amazon Kindle Store, you are ready to read!

First, open a Web Browser and go to the URL

http://read.amazon.com. You may have to log in,

using your Amazon account name and password. You

should then see your ebooks listed on the screen.

6) Reading an eBook in the Kindle Cloud Reader

You can now read your

ebook in the Kindle Cloud Reader.

To turn pages, click the “<“ or “>” arrows on the sides of the page.

If you later open the same ebook on another computer using the Kindle Cloud

Reader, or on a Kindle or iPad running “Kindle”, it

will remember your place in the ebook.

Kindle Mac App

1) Buy the title on Amazon

Using your web browser, open the title’s page on Amazon.

• For “Joan”, go to http://

amzn.com/B005YF5RZO

• For “Cartel”, go to http://

amzn.com/B005OR497E

Under the orange button labeled “Buy Now with 1-click” (on the right side of the window), you should see a link labeled

“Available on your Mac”.   Click on that link...

• the link should then take you

2) Start the Kindle Mac application download

Click the Blue button labeled “Download Now”.

3) Wait for the download

Downloading should begin...

• If you are asked, choose to

save the file on the desktop and to “run” as soon as the download is complete.

• On Safari, a progress

indicator shows the progress of the download.

• On Firefox, a separate

window appears to show the progress of the download.

Once the download is complete, the application should install itself automatically.

If for some reason it does not,

click the menu item “View” (for Safari), or “Window” (for Firefox), then choose “Downloads” and double-click the file named “KindleForMac.dmg”

4) Open the Kindle Mac app and Read!

Once the Kindle Mac app is installed, it should run

automatically.

• If it does not, you should be

able to launch it from your desktop or search for

“Kindle” on your Mac. You should be able to find the “Kindle” application in your “Applications” folder (under the “Go” menu).

Log in with your Amazon account and all of your

purchased Kindle titles should then appear.

• Click on any title to begin

Using your web browser, open the title’s page on Amazon.

• For “Joan”, go to http://

2) Start the Kindle PC application download

Click the Blue button labeled “Download Now”.

A new window will appear...

3) Enable the download to begin

On most PCs, a yellow bar will appear at the top of your

browser screen warning you that a download is about to begin.

To start the download, click anywhere on the yellow bar at the top of the window and

choose the “Download File…” option when the pop-up menu appears.

4) Open the Kindle PC app and Read!

Once the Kindle PC app is installed, it should run automatically.

• If it does not, you should be

able to launch it from your desktop or from the “Start” menu.

Log in with your Amazon account and all of your

purchased Kindle titles should then appear. Click on any title to begin reading it on your PC.
