Academic Program: BS Engineering Technology, Electronics and Instrumentation Concentration

Person Responsible: Brent Garner, Electronics and Instrumentation Program Coordinator Date Submitted: 6/1/09

Mission: The Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology with concentrations in Electronics and Instrumentation builds upon the skills developed at the associate level and

prepares graduates to fill supervisory or technical expert positions in industry, as well as providing a background for graduate study. Because these concentrations share many courses and instructors, they have been considered to be “closely related” by Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC of ABET), and will be treated as such for this document. In order to prepare students for employment in these areas, students will meet the following program outcomes, which indicate the skills developed by the program.

Institutional Mission Reference: These concentrations are related to the institutional mission in that they offer baccalaureate degrees that lead directly to employment as

entry-level electronics or instrumentation technicians with the opportunity for further advancement into supervisory or advanced technical support positions in local industry, providing them with the skilled technicians needed for their economic growth.

Student Learning Outcome 1: Graduates apply critical thinking in academic and professional environments.

Expected Level of Achievement

75% of co-op students score at 75% or higher on Questions 2 and 5 from TECH 250 and 450 Supervisor's Review.

75% of students enrolled in TECH420, a senior projects course, score a 75% on the project performance portion of the course grade.

75% of students will demonstrate troubleshooting of existing software programs and create new software programs for use in electronics and process systems – in particular those using programmable logic controllers and higher-level computer language programming for microcontrollers by scoring a 75% or higher on the following assessment methods:

* Final exam questions in INST304 with PLC programming content

* Survey questions from INST304 with PLC programming content

* Final exam results from ELTR310 * Test 1 average from ELTR310

Comment: The third achievement item is B.S. Program Outcome 2 for the Engr. Tech. concentrations in ELTR/INST.

Actual Data From Assessment

In the 2008-09 academic year, 100% of students scored at 75% or higher on the assessed questions from the Supervisor’s Review.

In the 2008-09 academic year, 75% of students scored a 75% or higher on the project performance score.

In the 2008-09 academic year, 75% of students met the expected level of achievment of 75% on the assessments from listed courses. The INST304 Final Exam and the ELTR310, Test 1 assessmenet items had fewer than 75% of the students scoring less than a 75%. The assessed items were changed for 2008-09 in ELTR 310 ( use of Test 1 instead of the Quiz Average).

Actions/Decisions

Continue to monitor student outcomes during the 2009-10 academic year. No actions will be taken based on the results from the 2008-09 academic year.

Faculty did discuss ideas about how to improve student performance in project courses such as TECH420. Weekly oral status reports were utilized in Spring 2008 and 2009 semesters to keep students on schedule and held extra meetings with students who were falling behind.

Further use of pseudocode exercises and multiple quizzes to attempt to increase student performance may be used in ELTR310 during Fall 2009. The last two spring semesters have seen low scores in the INST304 Final Exam assessment. Faculty will discuss possible actions to improve student performance.

Student Learning Outcome 2: Graduates formulate and express ideas effectively through oral, written, and/or technological communications in academic and professional

environments.

Expected Level of Achievement

75% of co-op students score at 75% or higher on Questions 1 and 4 from TECH 250 and 405 Supervisor's Review.

75% of students enrolled in TECH420, a senior projects course, score a 75% or higher on the final report portion of the course grade.

75% of students enrolled in TECH250 or 450 score a 75% or higher on the final report portion of the course grade.

75% of students score a 75% or higher on the lab report average in ELTR314.

Actual Data From Assessment

In the 2008-09 academic year, 100% of students scored at 75% or higher on the assessed questions from the Supervisor’s Review.

In the 2008-09 academic year, 100% of students scored a 75% or higher on the project report.

In the 2008-09 academic year, 87.5% of students scored a 75% or higher on the course report

In the 2008-09 academic year, this class was not taught.

Actions/Decisions

Continue to monitor student outcomes during the 2009-10 academic year. No actions will be taken based on the results from the 2008-09 academic year.

Emphasis on better rough drafts and personal discussions with students has produced better reports in Spring 2008 and 2009. No actions will be taken based on the results from the 2008-09 academic year.

Continue to monitor student outcomes during the 2009-10 academic year. No actions will be taken based on the results from the 2008-09 academic year.

Efforts were made in Spring 2008 to improve the lab report average, including posting a sample report on the Blackboard site and encouraging students to use the sample. The quicker return of lab reports could also help in improving the lab reports by providing more feedback to students. Continue to monitor student outcomes during the 2009-10 academic year when the class is again taught.

(4)

Student Learning Outcome 3: Graduates analyze the global community to make sound judgments in academic and professional environments.

Expected Level of Achievement

75% of students will comprehend the requirements of employees and supervisors in the global marketplace by scoring a 75% or higher on the following assessment methods:

* Final exam from TECH403 * Course survey from TECH403

* A mean of >= 4 on TECH250 and 450 Supervisor's Review.

* Mock interview score from TECH324 * The Project Management exam in TECH420.

Comment: The above assessment methods are used in the B.S. Program Outcome 3 for the Engr. Tech. concentrations in ELTR/INST.

Actual Data From Assessment

In the 2008-09 academic year, 83% of students met the expected level of achievement of 75% on the

assessments from listed courses.

The Final Exam result from TECH403 improved from the past year, but still fell below the expected value with 73% of the students scoring 75% or higher on the exam, but the average on the exam was 78%.

The Project Management exam has only 50% of the students scoring 75% or higher, but the average was 77.5%.

Actions/Decisions

Continue to monitor student outcomes during the 2009-10 academic year. No major actions will be taken based on the results from the 2008-09 academic year. The TECH420 Project Management assessment item was added when the ABET accreditation visit resulted in project management being added to the TECH420 project course. Another year of this topic, with better material review should enable the students to score higher.

(5)

Student Learning Outcome 4: Analyze, design, and implement systems using current electronic and instrumentation equipment. (This SLO has been reworded and the

assessment methods slightly modified as a result of the ABET accreditation process.)

Expected Level of Achievement

75% of students will acquire the knowledge to make purchasing decisions for current electronic and instrumentation equipment.by scoring a 75% or higher on the following assessment methods:

* Final exam questions in INST304 with PLC hardware content

* Survey questions from INST304 with PLC hardware content

* Final exam results from ELTR314 that deal with lab equipment tradeoffs

* Survey questions from ELTR314 that deal with lab equipment tradeoffs

* 75% of students enrolled in TECH420, a senior projects course, score a 75% or higher on the project function portion of the course grade.

Comment: This is B.S. Program Outcome 1 for the Engr. Tech. concentrations in ELTR/INST.

Actual Data From Assessment

In the 2008-09 academic year, 85% of students met the expected level of achievment of 75% on the assessments from listed courses. Because ELTR314 was not taught in the Spring 2009 semester, the data from this class was not available.

Actions/Decisions

In 2008-09 efforts to include performance on this outcome included a review of course topics dealing with purchasing decisions before the final exam and the course survey are administered.

As a result of the ABET accreditation process, the wording of this SLO was changed from relating only to hardware specification and purchasing to the more general statement shown above.

The TECH420 assessment item was added as a result of the SLO modification.
