This is your lodge. We are trying to make this lodge a better “home”. We have seen a few people flicking their ashes and putting their cigarettes out on the new floor.

You would not do this at home. We have a lot of ashtrays.

Please use them!

In updating the bathrooms, the plumbers have found that some people are putting paper towels in the toilet and also large wads of toilet paper. This is not good for the pipes and this has been causing our toilets to back up and overflow. Our bathrooms are cleaned every day. Nothing should be flushed except toilet paper.

MOOSE HEALTH

HYPERTENSION AND DIET

February was Heart M onth but taking care of your heart is something you need to do every month of your life. One of the ways to take care of your heart is to control or prevent hypertension. Diet is an important part of managing and preventing hypertension.

Five high-sodium foods, and not all of them are salty tasting, are a big reason why nine in ten Americans get way too much sodium every day. Only about 10 percent of US adults limit their daily sodium intake to recommended levels.

M ost of the sodium comes from salt but only 10 percent of it comes from salt shakers. An estimated 77% comes from sodium in processed or restaurant foods.

All food categories contribute to sodium intake. However, grains and meat – the foods we eat most – contribute the most sodium. Five foods that give Americans most of their sodium are: yeast breads, chicken and mixed chicken dinners, pizza, pasta dishes, and cold cuts.

It is surprising that we get the most sodium from three food groups: (1) grains contribute 37 percent of our daily sodium. These foods include grain-based frozen meals and soups, bread, and pizza; (2) meats, including poultry and fish, contribute 28 percent of our daily sodium; (3) vegetables contribute more than 12 percent of our daily sodium. Remember potato chips and French fries are vegetables. Canned vegetables, vegetable soups, and vegetable sauces tend to be loaded with sodium.

One step to lower high blood pressure is to incorporate the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) into your lifestyle. The following is a list of food groups and suggested serving amounts for the DASH diet.

! Grains: 7 to 8 daily servings

! Vegetables 4 to 5 daily servings

! Fruits 4 to 5 daily servings

! Low-fat or fat-free dairy products 2 to 3 daily servings

! M eat, poultry, and fish 2 or less daily servings

! Nuts, seeds, and dry beans 4 to 5 servings per week

! Fats and oils 2 to 3 daily servings

! Sweets Less than 5 servings per week

Some examples of serving sizes include: ½ cup of cooked rice or pasta, 1 slice of bread, 1 cup of raw vegetables or fruit,

½ cup cooked vegetables or fruit, 8 ounces of milk, 1 teaspoon of olive oil, 3 ounces of cooked meat.

W hen beginning the diet, start slowly and make gradual changes. Consider adopting a diet plan that allows 2,400 milligrams of salt per day (about 1 teaspoon) and then, once your body has adjusted to the diet, further lower your salt intake to 1,500 mg per day (about 2/3 teaspoon). These amounts include all salt consumed, including that in food products used in cooking and added at the table.

Here are some tips to get you started on the DASH diet:

! Add a serving of vegetables at lunch and at dinner.

! Add a serving of fruit to you meals or as a snack. Canned and dried fruits are easy to use.

! Use only half the butter, margarine, or salad dressing, and use low-fat or fat-free condiments.

! Drink low-fat or skim dairy products three times a day.

! Limit meat to six ounces a day. Try to eat some vegetarian meals.

! Add more vegetables, rice, pasta, and dry beans to your diet.

! Instead of typical snacks, eat unsalted pretzels or nuts, raisins, graham crackers, low-fat and fat-free yogurt and frozen yogurt, unsalted plain popcorn with no butter, and raw vegetables.

! Read food labels carefully to choose products that are lower in sodium.

So DASH forward, keep the hypertension in control and the heart healthy.
