Many believe that there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If so, how can people reach or get that pot of gold?

Let’s begin by studying the undying classic.

Do you know the song “Over the Rainbow”, if so, sing it. If not, refer to the lyrics below.

OVER THE RAINBOW

Somewhere over the rainbow way up high

There’s a land that I heard of once

In a lullaby

Somewhere over the rainbow Skies are blue

And the dreams that you dare To dream

Really do come true.

Someday I’ll wish upon a star And wake up where the clouds

Are far behind me

Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops

That’s where you’ll find me…

Somewhere over the rainbow Blue birds fly

Birds fly over the rainbow Why then o why can’t I?

What is the message of the song? Share it with your mother or to anyone who listened to you sing it or recite its words.

You are now ready to read this story.

In a village by the sea, there once lived three brothers. Orphaned at an early age, the brothers were poor. They depended on fishing for their living. The hut they were living in was the same hut left by their parents.

One day, while they were fixing their nets and their bancas, they noticed the appearance of a beautiful rainbow in the sky.

“Beautiful, isn’t it?” started Julio, the oldest.

“I remember… old folks say that at the end of the rainbow, there is a pot of gold,” recalled Ben, the second, putting down the net he was folding.

“Oh yes, there’s a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow… there…,” Julio said, pointing to the horizon.

The three brothers were silent for a moment, looking at the beautiful rainbow. For a while, they were in deep thought.

Then Julio spoke. “Why don’t we go and look for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. Then we won’t be this poor.”

The next morning, Julio and Ben got up early. They wrapped rice in banana leaves and added some salt. They noticed that Lito was not as eager as the two of them.

“Aren’t you going with us, Lito?” Julio asked. “I’d rather stay in our hut,” answered Lito.

“Don’t tell me you are not hoping to rise from this gutter we are in,” Julio emphatically said.

“Are you contented in staying here, poor, in a hand-to-mouth existence?” Ben asked.

“It’s just that I want to stay in our own hut where our parents left us. Anyway, there is the sea that is the source of our living,” answered Lito.

“But what kind of living?” asked Ben. “As Kuya Julio has said, hand-to-mouth!”

“Well, I remember what Nanay used to tell us…” reasoned Lito. “What?” asked Ben without waiting for Lito to finish.

“That God has so generously given us the sea,” said Lito.

“That means you really have decided to stay,” concluded Julio. “ And that you are not going with us,” added Ben.

Lito shook off his head. “I won’t go, I am staying,” he said. The two left.

Lito was sad when his two brothers left. But he could not stop them. Knowing how they had made up their minds to go.

With that thought always in his mind, he prayed to God for guidance. He joined good friends who brought him to church. He learned that God help those who help themselves.

So that became his daily routine: prayers, work, worshipping God in church.

Then he surveyed the farm left by his parents. He cultivated the land and planted corn and vegetables. Day in and day out, he farmed and took care of his plant.

At dawn, long before the sun rose, and long before other people awoke, he had come back from fishing in the nearby sea.

Time came when he had a lot of vegetables and fish to sell. He did not even go to the market to sell these. Neighbors came to buy from him. Some even bought fish and vegetables to sell at the market.

Meantime, Lito had saved enough money to improve their hut and build sheds for his products. His compound had become a little commercial place.

The time came for Lito to get married. He brought home Ditas, who soon became his partner in his work. Together, husband and wife developed their farm. They established a sari-sari store, too.

(9)

8

“Is this it, really?”

“Where did this farm full of plants come from?” “And that big house! Could it be our old hut?” The two approached Ditas in the store.

“Do you know where we could find Lito? Lito Planas? “He’s my husband,” answered Ditas?

“Oh, so our brother Lito has married.”

Just then Lito came out carrying a bag of catch. “Come in,” Lito said.

“Lito,” Ben said, “It’s you who have found the pot of gold.” “Yes, the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is right here.”
