The Ascension of the Lord
LOVE Jesus, LEARN to be a disciple, LIVE your calling, LAUNCH into the world
A Message
from Father Tony Herold If you have been at Mass each of the last six weekends of Easter, you have heard me preach about intentional disciple-ship using the image of the base-ball diamond. This graphic doesn’t exhaust everything that can be said about discipleship but it portrays a good under-standing of the stages that one must go through if we hope to be effective as intentional disciples. The leadership of our parish uses this model to organize the various activities and ministries that are part of our community. This weekend we will be issuing a call for the folks involved in our various ministries to discern whether or not you might be called to participate in the lead-ership of the parish.
Our parish is organized under five major commissions: Evan-gelization and Discipleship; Worship and Prayer; Steward-ship and Communications; Hos-pitality and Relationships; and Service and Justice.
Each commission strives to insure that those involved in the Church will be effective disci-ples. The commission members work to align all the activity in their particular area with the mission of the parish. The lead-ership always works with an eye to forming intentional disciples and to help each person be ef-fective instruments in the impor-tant work of the Church.
Everything we do at Saint Paul Parish must be done to pro-mote the mission that Christ has given to his church to “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature” as we hear in this Sunday’s gospel proclamation.
Our leadership structure is relatively new and we openly admit that it is a “work in pro-gress” as we live into this model of intentional discipleship. I am extremely happy that we are asking the right questions and have a common understanding of the goal of our parish. This is not something we manufactured. It comes directly from the gos-pels, Church teaching and the exhortations of our recent Popes who remind us that the primary mission of the church is to evan-gelize.

Take Home Discussion Questions:
Q: What “baseline” do you find yourself on in the model of inten-tional discipleship we have been sharing these past weeks?
Q: Which is the most challenging baseline for you?
Q: What excites you as you look at the future of our parish?
Discipleship Series
Growing up in the fifties, the phrase, “God is love,” was not something she remembered hearing. Longtime St. Paul the Apostle parishioner Fran Driscoll recalls the emphases being more on keeping the rules, sin, and punishment. “Consequently, I will probably
always retain some measure of that good ol’ Catholic guilt,” Fran admits. Intellectually, I knew God loved me, but I always seemed to be waiting for payback for not measuring up.” Things changed over time and Fran can recall so many ways in which her life was touched by God’s grace. “I gradually came to know that God is not a divine
man,” she says. There were glimpses of it when she was just a kid. “I slept with a rosary instead of a teddy bear,” she says fondly. “I vividly remember playing with my friends, stopping suddenly, throwing a skirt over my shorts and running the half-mile to church to make a holy hour.” Her early encounters with Jesus changed her heart and kept her open to further growth in discipleship.
While her parents gave her a strong love of the Catholic faith, she also owned that faith herself and developed habits to nurture her relationship with Christ. “My prayer life started when I was very young and it’s never stopped,” she says. “Sometimes it consists of sitting quietly in church or just saying ‘Thank you, Jesus’ for all the good little things that fill my day.” In addition to prayer, Fran has developed a passion for study over the years. “I’ve been involved with the Monday night Scripture studies since they began almost ten years ago. To quote Frank Sheed, ‘Every new thing we learn about God is one more reason to love Him.’”
As a wife, a mother, and a grandmother, Fran says her life is filled with opportunities to live out her calling as an intentional disciple. Her primary calling? That’s simple. “Raising our six children in the faith and helping them to know Christ,” she says. “You can’t fake it with kids. You’ve gotta teach by example. If my faith isn’t important to me, there’s a pretty good chance it won’t be important to my children.”
By so many standards, Fran is the epitome of an intentional disciple. But she still struggles. “I wonder if God is calling me to do more, like there’s something I’m not hearing.” Inspired by the spirituality and example of St. Theresa of the Little Flower, Fran attempts a life of doing small things with great love for God. “I’m not always successful with the love part,” she says. “But finding God in the ordinary can take me to the depth where the ordinary becomes sacred.”
Fran doesn’t have to travel far to “launch” into the world. She’s a veritable prayer warrior, interceding daily for her children (each one is given a day, Pat gets one too), and for others in need. “I’m part of the parish prayer chain so when I receive a call and a prayer request, I pray.” Fran reminds us that prayer is no small thing. “I scoff a little whenever I hear someone say, ‘I guess all we can do is pray.’ Prayer is the best thing we can do for one another!”
Fran is so excited to see her own children launching out into the world, passing on their faith to their own chil-dren. “They continue to inspire us along the way. Our journey continues and our children can
be our teachers!” So many in our parish have been blessed by Fran, our own “little flower.” In all the small things she does, we can see God’s big love for us.
Doing Small Things With Great Love:
Fran Driscoll on Life in Discipleship
"There is but one thing for us to do in the night of this life and that is to love, to love Jesus with all the energy of our heart and
to save souls so that He may be loved by them. O let us cause Jesus to be loved by all!"
Living Our Mission
“Go and make disciples of all nations. . .”
Matthew 28:19
We at St. Paul the Apostle are all about
FORMING INTENTIONAL DISCIPLES. The diamond of discipleship is our
game plan for accomplishing this mission. We believe that every disciple is called to encounter Christ person-ally, to follow Him passionately, to discover their unique calling, and to serve the world accordingly. We do this by being intentional with every person, process and program. Why? Because we love God and honor the
Great Commission He gave us. LOVE...Jesus.
The spiritual journey begins with a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. These encounters change our hearts, set us ablaze for Christ and reorient our lives to Him. What we do on this “baseline” creates opportunities for the Holy Spirit to work as people encounter Jesus and open their eyes to the LOVE of God that transforms their lives, helping them to “fall in love” with the Risen Savior. Through continual encounter and conversion, our hearts are set ablaze and our relationship with God is renewed.
LEARN...to be a disciple.
After the initial encounter with the Lord, the LEARN stage of spiritual development helps people develop the habits of the heart and head that ensures growth in their relationship with Jesus. People in this stage learn to pray, to read the Scriptures, to receive the Sacraments with heart fully opened, to fellowship with other disci-ples, to listen to the still small voice of God and draw the courage to follow Jesus daily. Our goal in this stage is to form vibrant, mature and disciplined followers of Christ.
LIVE...your calling.
This stage in the spiritual journey is all about discernment. It assumes that the individual is a mature disciple and poses the questions, “What is my unique calling in this community? How do my own gifts and affinities apply to the world at large? What unique role is God calling me to?” The Church’s work in this stage provides a process of discernment whereby each disciple can discover how their deepest passions intersect with the world’s greatest needs to give glory to God.
LAUNCH...into the world.
Once a disciple discovers his/her calling, it is now time to get to work! They are ready to be LAUNCHED into the world to serve others according to their gifts and passions. They are sent into the world to intentionally en-gage others, building authentic relationships, and sharing the gospel in the organic context of their daily lives. The Church’s work in this stage is to provide intentional disciples an opportunity to live out their calling, to press into the true self, the person God created us to be.
