THE ONLINE NEWSLETTER FOR GUNTER ISD
Never Forget
September 11, 2001
September 11th - A day that should never be forgotten. At Gunter ISD, we want our students to know the importance of this day in history. If you ask somebody where they were when the attacks happened, most people can tell you in detail what they were doing. Families should make this an annual discussion every year on this day so we will NEVER FORGET!
Mrs. Wright’s 4th grade students remembered our heroes of 9/11 by using their grid system map skills to make a portion of the posters after studying the events that happened 19 years ago.
The middle school students were taken out to the flag pole to listen to Mrs. Inglish talk to them about the events of that day and how our country came together with strength and unity. She talked about the freedom we have and how our flag represents freedom and that we need to protect that freedom. The GHS students watched a 9/11 documentary during morning announcements. Some of the teachers had the students write a reflection in their journal after viewing it.
As we think about what happened, and remember the first responders running into the buildings while civilians ran out, we want to thank our police, firefighters, and paramedics for their service.
Spotlight: GISD Police Department
We are excited to spotlight our new GISD Chief of Police this month, Shannon Thomas. We asked him why he wanted to come out of retirement to start our police department. Chief Thomas explained that there were two specific reasons that he was interested in this position. First, he loved being a positive role model and mentor for his son and the students in the Pottsboro area through coaching soccer, assisting in youth basketball and football, working as a parent booster with the FFA, and helping his son’s boy scout troop. “Working with kids were very rewarding moments,” said Chief Thomas. The second reason this job appealed to him was because of the 2018 tragic Sante Fe High School shooting. Governor Abbott asked the Texas Department of Public Safety to develop a program to assist rural school districts with a Troopers in School programs. Coach Thomas said, “I had been sent to four different active shooter programs and numerous emergency management programs during my time as a Corporal and Sergeant and was honored to be chosen as the pilot program Sergeant in Hunt County. He coordinated the pilot program with 12 troopers which helped several rural school districts increase their safety. By the time he retired, there were approximately 300 troopers around the State assigned to rural school districts, and the program is still in place.
What kind of department do you hope to build here at this district? “Protection of the students and staff is the number one priority of my position. Second is mentorship, and I hope to be invited to be involved in school committees regarding student activities and programs. I am setting the ground work for the future growth of the protection of Gunter ISD. As the growth from Collin County continues to move north, within the next decade Gunter will see a massive amount of growth. Outside of protection and mentorship, I would like the new Gunter ISD Police Department to be prepared in advance to handle the growth of the school district and the new challenges that will come with the growth.”
What have you loved about your new position? “Being around the students and developing a professional mentorship with them has been what I have enjoyed the most. In just one month, students are already starting to communicate with me in the hallways and during games. Building trust with our students is a priority and being a part of the Gunter ISD family has been a fantastic transition from one form of law enforcement to a new type of law enforcement. I feel blessed that the Gunter ISD Administration chose me to start the new school police department and to represent Gunter ISD.”

Ms. Loewen’s class loves Library Day with Mrs. Marr! In-class and remote students enjoy hearing her read in person and by ZOOM! Brylie, Hailey, K’lee, and Tollie heard stories about the season changing to Fall and the month of September.
Homemade Butter!
After reading When I Was Young in the Mountains, a story by Cynthia Rylant, Mrs. Beaty’s 2nd grade class made homemade butter. The story follows a little girl as she eats home-cooked Appalachian meals cooked by her grandmother and gets kissed hello by her coal-dust covered grandfather. It’s a story of memories and family love from the author’s perspective.

These Kindergartners in Mrs. Fielding's class are able to enjoy and learn through their "Imagination Stations" in a safe way thanks to a donation of these super cool face shields by a parent. Now the students are able to problem solve, use their creative imagination and work on STEAM activities through hands on experiences (and lots of disinfectant in between!)
Face Shield Donation = Safe Play Areas
Students in Mrs. Pelzel’s class practiced the steps in the scientific method to build a successful paper airplane. They researched, created an airplane, tested it out and observed the flight. They also tried a different design based off of what they had learned. Mrs. Pelzel said, “We had a great
time testing them out and learning along the way!”

Adopt a Reading Buddy
Reading is more fun with a friend, so Mrs. Beaty’s students celebrated Adopt a Reading Buddy in their classroom. They got to choose a stuffed animal to adopt as their nightly reading buddy. Each student had to promise to take care of it by reading to their “buddy” at least 15 minutes EVERY night.
Elementary students remind us
that sometimes in life, you just
Live from Mrs. Murphy’s Classroom
Talk about relevant, STEAM classes were busy designing, budgeting and building hurricane-proof houses. The 2020 hurricane season has been so active that the National Hurricane Center ran out of names and had to move to the Greek Alphabet to continue naming
the storms. (https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml)
The students research in this classroom might just spark a career for somebody who will help build a more hurricane-proof building for those living on the coast in the future.
Forced Perspective
Students in Mrs. Clement’s photography class learned to create an optical illusion with their camera. Forced perspective photography is when the subject of an image looks smaller/ larger or closer/farther away than it actually is. This optical illusion happens when the background and foreground of a photo seem to interact due to the photo’s
composition. The students used their imagination to create some humorous situations on the GMS campus. Please note: No students were harmed by any alligators in this activity :)
What Do We Carry?
After reading The Things They Carried, by Tim O’Brien, GMS students drew their own backpack in Mrs. Bullard’s art class depicting the things they, themselves carry.
In the book, the things the characters carry are both literal and figurative. While they all carry heavy physical loads, they also all carry heavy emotional loads.
The 5th grade students have been busy! In Mrs. Bon’s science lab, the students have been working on learning the Scientific Method. They have completed two labs to practice going through the steps.
In the first lab, students had to guess how many drops of water a penny would hold, and in another lab, the students were guessing how many of a certain colored Skittles were in a snack size bag. In science, making a guess isn’t just “guessing”... they were hypothesizing! After following all of the steps in each lab, the students now have a better understanding of the scientific method. By the way, did you know that a penny can hold close to 60 drops of water? The students teamed up to make sure the counting was correct, and the number of drops varied, but they were certainly higher than what they thought.
In Mrs. Freeny’s math class the 5th grade students were snoozing, but not in the way you might think! They were sharpening their problem solving skills as they moved about outside on a “Snoozing Safari”. The mission: Locate and solve challenging word problems about the sleep habits of unusual animals. Creative writing skills are happening in Mrs.
Schroeter’s room. 5th graders wrote a Bio-Poem about themselves. They are hanging in the hall where they can be admired by all who pass by and read them.
In the Skittles lab, after sorting and counting their candy, students learned how to graph their results. The data from the classroom revealed that each individual snack contained a varied number of pieces and colors.
Students in Mrs. Wallis’s physics class were determining the acceleration due to gravity on Earth by dropping objects and comparing the speed at which they dropped.
The objective of the lesson was to show that air resistance did indeed make objects drop at different rates. BUT... did you know that if you remove the air and drop two objects of ANY weight, they will drop at the exact same rate? Unfortunately, we can’t remove the air in our classrooms, so the students watched this experiment unfold through a video created at NASA, and it is incredible! Click here to see a bowling ball and a feather drop at the same rate!
Bowling Balls - Light as a Feather?
Solving
the
Mystery!
Mrs. McDonald’s science students had a small taste of what a forensic scientist might do when analyzing a crime scene. The students walked into an unfamiliar scene in their classroom... a crime scene! They were told they needed to solve the murder mystery using science.
In the lab they analyzed stomach contents from the victim to find biomolecules such as simple sugars, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
The test results were compared with other clues to figure out who committed the
