STARMIND:
A BRAIN TECHNOLOGY
COMPANY
Starmind uses self-learning algorithms that have been created based on recent insights in brain research and robotics. The system enables organizations with more than 5,000 employees to gather company know-how across existing organizational boundaries, making it available to all employees, everywhere and in real time.
Corporate Brain Technology: Each question of an employee is automatically forwarded to the right person within the company who the algorithm has identified as the designated expert for that specific topic.
Industry-independent: Starmind is used in more than 40 countries by leading companies from many industries. Amongst the clients are companies such as UBS, Swisscom, Ogilvy & Mather, Mettler-Toledo and international insurance companies.
ABOUT
INSTANT ADDED VALUE
A real-time network provides answers to specific questions of any employee in real time, gaining added value upon first usage.
A corporate brain as strategic asset – questions and solutions are stored and bundled, making know-how easily accessible from anywhere at any time. Through mobile devices, one has access “to a thousand brains in one’s pocket”.
A key competitive differentiator at the client frontline – relieving bottlenecks and increasing operational efficiency.
BENEFITS OF A SELF-LEARNING TECHNOLOGY
No profile management: Starmind creates user profiles automatically, no profile setup and no moderation are required. Starmind does not believe in yet another social media platform for companies.
No tutorial required: The easy interface allows for fast implementation and instant results. Through low hurdles, user responsiveness and stickiness is high.
No moderation of content: Algorithms cluster users based on the content they produce or consume and the time spent on specific content. Connections and interactions between users and content are learnt and leveraged.
HIGHEST INDUSTRY STANDARDS
Highly secure hosting: Servers are protected and maintained in Switzerland and locally certified hosting partners.
Regular security audits with some of the highest industry standards.
10 REASONS FOR
BRAIN TECHNOLOGY
Increases profitability: shortens ramp-up time for new hires through fast time to solution.
Reduces risks: identifies white spots and lacking expertise in real time.
Increases efficiency: accelerates staffing of projects and deloads the usual suspects.
Fosters culture: fosters team spirit and contributes to a modern corporate culture. New USP: differentiates frontline through real-time problem solving capacity.
Asking questions anonymously reduces psychological barriers to asking colleagues or experienced seniors for help. When stuck with a novel challenge,
Starmind finds the right answer for users independent of a mentor or coach.
Automated identification of know-how white spots by displaying unsolved questions, allowing for more targeted hiring processes and better risk assessment. Time to solution and content generated can be moni-tored in real time.
Experts are classified automatically on their competency based on peer ratings. No self-evaluation and no questionnaires are required. Known information highways and informal networks are made explicit and learnt by algorithms.
Receiving and sharing solutions and problems increases team spirit and employee satisfaction, accelerating integration of new staff or entire divisions.
As those asking questions are anonymous, silos can be bridged and employees brought together based on complementary know-how.
By connecting individuals, collective problem solving competence is made accessible. When facing clients, consultants can access company know-how in real time via any mobile device, differentiating themselves by means of cutting-edge Brain Technology. Specified brain areas can selectively be opened to clients.
How Starmind Brain Technology turns a company into a self-learning high-performance organization
Increases efficiency:
frees time of experts by routing questions to a corporate memory.
Retains know-how: corporate memory retains and stores know-how systematically.
Fast ROI:
generates measurable business cases and allows ROI within a few months.
High stickiness: low hurdles and high stickiness through innovative brain displays.
Highest security standards :
easy to install and maintain.
Accessing the corporate memory deloads experts and relieves bottlenecks, taking the pressure off top experts’ shoulders by deloading them from recurring questions.
Counteract the brain drain, Starmind builds up a strategic corporate memory and expertise. Projects, know-how and expertise are retained when employees leave the company.
A feature automatically asks for an indication of how much time was saved when a solution is given a good rating. Linking time savings with salary costs and freed-up time for other tasks shows how interesting business cases are calculated.
Starmind installations can be visualized in real time on large 2 meter wide glass brains. Interacting with a corporate brain reduces hurdles and helps position the system internally in a unique way.
No moderation of the Starmind system is required as algorithms actively verify content based on peer ratings and automated identification of experts. Starmind is offered as “Software as a Service” (SaaS) or an
on-premise service. Starmind is secure and meets some of the highest security standards in the industry. Starmind leverages
the Human Capital of an entire organization or business unit.
Starmind increases problem solving capacity when facing clients and during projects.
Starmind generates measurable business cases and allows ROI within a few months.

Saved costs:
USD 6 million per year, based on business case module
UBS’s IT know-how is unique and a core differentiator particularly in the fields of mobile banking, security and client facing technologies. In 2012, experience and expertise within global IT were loosely distributed across hierarchies, geographical locations and time zones. Based on an internal assessment by Gartner, the following factors were crucial for UBS choosing Starmind Brain Technology.
Starmind was implemented fast and there was no need for tutorials or entering user profiles as a self-learning algorithm autonomously learns skills and expertise. There is a measurable ROI by a built-in business case module that qualifies measurable impact in real time. It is also important to UBS that Starmind is scalable to all divisions. In 2014, several international UBS business units signed up for Starmind with the goal to provide all UBS employees access to the UBS corporate brain.
Percentage of solved questions: 91% of asked questions were answered within the respective observation period.
Time to solution: 48% of all questions were solved within less than 2 hours.
Consumed solutions: on average, 600 existing solutions were consumed every week, reducing the number of questions asked.
User activity: 36% of all activated users either asked or solved questions.
From the users:
What I like about Starmind is that I receive solutions to my questions within a short time and without having to interrupt anyone’s work.

Percentage of solved questions: 93% of posed questions were answered within the respective observation period.
Return on investment time: less than 6 months.
Consumed solutions: on average, 6,000 existing solutions are consumed every week.
Average time saved per solved question: 2,9 hours. The Swisscom-Starmind network was implemented in autumn 2012. After a pilot phase within Swisscom’s IT Services (ITS), a corporate rollout was followed in February 2013. Branded as “Ask the Brain”, the network has more than 15,000 users even though only 60% of the 20,000 Swisscom employees would be considered knowledge workers.
Hence, the Swisscom management presented Starmind as a success story in their internal communication to all employees with their remarkable no-email policy. Not one single email was sent out to promote “Ask the Brain”. Swisscom used a 2 meter glass brain display in the lobby of their headquarters: the Starmind Brain Display provides a dynamic visualization of the intensity of the user group activity. Being a pioneer in Switzer-land regarding latest communication technology, Starmind fully supports Swisscom’s new generation communication philosophy.
Starmind is my ‘extended Swisscom memory’: There is hardly ever a question nobody knows an answer to.
